If you are hell bent on all those channels I would recommend another SSP that does this for now. Even though I luv my theta gear.
I would think and hope it is easy to add 3D sound decoder as the function is already in the chip: From DTS HD to DTS Neo:x, how difficult could it be? But... for anyone looking I would add a caution against picking SSP based on whether it has the lastest 3D decoder for a few reasons.
3D sound is exciting frontier and I am reading/asking questions , but... the front 3 channels (main and center) to me are major determinants of sound for any given system, and still where battles are won and lost between SSP's for the "audiophiles."
If sound from front 3 is shiitty, adding surround speakers are not going to make a silk purse. Obviously I have my bias, but we all know where this argument is heading: I would still look at the likes of Theta, Classe, and Meridian, with their excellent analog output stage design, before I lay eyes on new comers touting the latest technology.
I do wonder for home environment whether encoded 3D audio will make it at all, or whether it is going the way of 3D video and multi-channel music. It would have to prove to be a SIGNIFICANT advantage over a home 7.1 system, not to this small population of discerning ears here but also to the public for companies to encode it to BD. And that's where my doubt comes in. The issue is more than just about how much better it sounds. Even assuming that it sounds *significantly* better, how many in the general population are willing to put up 10 speakers in their TV room? If people don't care (meaning, no $), 3D audio is going to be a dead duck for home environment.
For those among us who can't bear to watch the likes of Iron Man for even 5 seconds
, any height channel advantage may never even matter. Front 3 channels' data such as dialogue, music, etc., dominate the typical Tarantino/Coen Brothers/etc. type flicks that I favor, at ground level. The message, for me anyway, is same, pick SSP based on sound quality. If 3D audio does overcome the point of "diminishing return," a big if, I can't help but think it's an easy and fast addition to the CPU and to current Theta.Edited by cannga - 10/13/13 at 4:44pm
