Will Plasma ever be as sharp as Led-Lcd?

This is the one area where I think led-lcd has any advantage over plasma.

Plasma kill lcd when it comes to picture quality, so I will never buy an led-lcd. However, when I look at someone else's led sets they are noticeably much sharper than plasma tvs (noise free). This to me is the ONLY advantage lcd has over plasma. For example when you sit close to a plasma you can see the phoshors moving, yet for an led set they are crystal clear at all times. You can still tell a difference in sharpness from normal levels between the tech also.

Since this is a phosphor based tech it could be difficult, would it be hard to become sharper? Will PDP ever be nearly as sharp as an led set?

They only appear sharper at very close viewing distances. At proper viewing distance there should be no difference in perceivable sharpness. Just my opinion.

I can tell a difference though. From 50" tvs from 10 ft. away easily.

No, they wont.

They will never be as clean looking up close either.

Unfortunately, both technologies have there shortcomings. It's for you to decide which ones you want to live with.

I mean, plasma are still sharp, just not nearly as much as lcd. I just can't wait for OLED. It even sharper than lcd, great motion, absolute blacks...man.

This Samsung plasmas are very sharp, some LCD pictures are to sharp to appoint of being unrealistic. Plasma pictures are more realistic then LCD.

LCDs are often too sharp and artificial looking. I personaly prefer the smoother look given by plasmas.

I agree. The LCD razor sharpness is impressive for short term viewing, but if I have to sit through a 2 hour movie, the plasma picture is much more comfortable on the eyes.

I think your thinking of "Motion enhancing" modes on led tvs. They make them artificially sharp. I am not talking about that kind of sharpness (I hate the way led sets do that).

I am just talking about the noise free nature of them, not crap like auto motion plus.

pixel spacing. Closer the pixel, picture looks smoother, thats why people say plasmas have more of a film like picture.

I always thought that the Samsungs were the best at having a clean sharp image.

When it comes to watching blu ray, my Onkyo player has a sharpness setting that doesn't seem to add any edge enhancement effects. It makes my plasma look similar to an lcd.

Are you buying a 2011 Panasonic, btw?

I am not buying a Panasonic until their black level issues are proved to be eliminated completely. (my last one rose)

Anyways, I am going to Best Buy Magnolia today and am doing a direct comparison of Panasonic vs Samsung plasma sharpness (with no enhancing modes on), I'll report back what I thought when I get back.

LOL no obsessing at all. Legitimate complaints about my tv rising, but as we know this forum is full of Panny fanboys who like to supress any negative feedback about it. There is no denying this forum is mostly Panny fanboys...at all.

The only LCD I wish I had jumped on was the Samsung 52a750. Perfect mix of everything, bright and rich and better than todays LCD/LEDS

I actually prefer the picture to be smoother. Excess sharpness hurts the eyes. I don't know why people looking for razor sharp picture but I'd rather have a smoother picture like Cinemas offer.

I like my Panny I just bought and this is my 3rd plasma I have owned. I also love my xbr4. I can honestly say I will never buy another plasma! led , lcd, dlp for me! Why , because they have a better picture to me and the other 4 members of my family! Sharper images , (i think) is why lcd sales are putting plasma to shame!

lmao. Putting to shame? I also own a LED and a Plasma. THe Plasma is far superior in picture depth in the darker areas. More natural picture on THX mode. But you can get that cartoonish picture on game mode as well similar to LED.

Uh, if its in a DIM room then, yes, that is the ideal way to view plasmas...

I am in favor of plasma, in general...but the noise in the picture does seem to be too high. I recall the lower light output of something like a pz800 allowed a lower noise level, but also a lower light level. I'm ok with this as I think most flat panels are way too bright to begin with.

I have an xbr too...a 34xbr960 crt, and there is still nothing that can beat it for all around viewability. Size is not as big of a factor for an enjoyable viewing experience...especially when you have a noisy picture, raised blacks or terrible off axis viewing....
