Please advise on sub purchase through newegg only

Hey all,

I bought a receiver that came with a $150 promotional gift card that you get back at newegg and I already have a 5.0 Jamo set on its way from 6ave so I'm in need of a sub now but am down on cash for a while.

I will end up having to use the 150 gift card towards a sub to complete the system and I can add up to 80 bucks which leaves me a limited number of options.

Option 1: go with 2 polk psw10's (on sale at newegg for 80 bucks a piece) but these are limited to 50 wts cont power, 100 wts dyn power. I have a yammi 667 with 2 sub outputs.

Option 2: get the polk psw 110 for 152 bucks and use the extra cash for something else (100 wts cont power, 200 dyn power)

Option 3: get the polk psw505 12 inch sub for 229 and use up all the cash (300 wts cont, 600 wts dyn power)

Which of these options would go best with a set of jamo 426 5.0 surround set and the yammi 667 reciever in a regular size living room in a 3 bedroom ranch style home (I'd say the room is maybe 16 x 16....18x 18...something around those lines).

Can anyone advise please? to me its either option 1 or 3 really, just dont know if option 1 would provide enough for me even though there would be 2 of them given the ouput rating is pretty low.

I was wrong on the polk psw505 dyn output, its actually 460 watts and not 600...just in case this may make a difference between these choices.

Save about another 75 bucks and buy a HSU stf-1...its ALOT nicer than those. Or the Bic F12 or pl-200 are nice for the money. Most here are gonna agree that Polk doesnt make very good subs

Too bad NewEgg doesn't sell HSU products. The OP said he has a $150 NewEgg gift card. So the options are limited to what NewEgg carries.

The only other option besides the Polk is the Energy sub for the same price. But I'm not familiar with either product. Too bad you can't get the $300 Klipsch. Although Klipsch isn't known for outstanding subs, they are probably better than Polk or Energy...

PSW505 will play down to 35 Hz

The PSW10 will play down to 40 Hz. I use one with a small satellite system in a very small bedroom. The PSW10 wold be hopeless in a moderate size room but two might work adequately. I did not purchase the PSW10 but had one made available to me.

Well, they have an energy sub right now for $150. Energy and Jamo were both owned by klipsch up until a few weeks ago.

That would use up your gift card. I really hate it when people recommend stuff out of my price range and I know you only have so much to work with, but if you can swing $100 instead of $80, I would get the klipsch over any of the polks. The sub12 has some good reviews on here and I have read it hits pretty hard.

I looked at the psw10 at a local store and build quality is very cheap. You will be disappointed even with two.

I looked at the psw5o5 but ended up with 2 bic f12's.

I have been running Jamo speakers for years and you will be very happy with your setup. That is my two cents. I think either of those subs would be great with your speaker package. The Klipsch obviously will dig deeper and have more impact, but the energy would be a nice addition too. It just boils down to whether or not you want to part with any extra cash.

To tell you the truth I would get something else at Newegg with your $150 gift card. There is plenty of good stuff besides subs at Newegg and use that $150 towards something else.

Then I would start looking at other subs like the BIC F12, PL-200, or V-1220, or something else that won't put a hurt on your wallet but are still better values and performers than those Polk subs.

or, find an item that you can sell on Ebay for close to the purchase price...then save a bit more and buy a better sub elsewhere. I love NewEgg, just not for subs.

Hey Cjsiv,

Thanks for the heads up on the sub 12 for only 20 bucks more than the polk505. I dont know how I didnt see that before at that price, but I'm thinking it must have been higher than that at the time I dont know. Between the two of them, I would think the kilpsch would be worth the extra 20 bucks over the polk. I figured if I have to I'll go sell a few games at gamestop I don't play anymore and be able to afford it.

I really appreciated everyone's input so far, I think it was a mistake of me to think I was getting the 667 for 350 bucks b/c of the gift card without realizing the limited choices they had on subs.

Just dieing to get one to have it shipped before next weekend though. One thing I do know is being I dont have the speakers yet for the 667, I've only been able to hook up headphones to it and I'll say one thing I dont know how it does it but it can make a piece of crap headphone set sound downright awesome with the virtural surround...I was really impressed even with that

You will not be happy with a 10" sub in that big of a room, especially with that little of RMS or (continuous power). You would have to sit around the 10" sub like a camp fire to enjoy it lol.

IMO I would go with the Polk PSW505 or save up enough money to get it. Many reviews of very happy people and 300 RMS is a very nice out put range for a ported sub.

If you decide to go with PSW505 it's $199 right now from Newegg with code EMCKHKB29. Not exactly sure what their return policy is, I think you pay return shipping but you could try it and see if you like it.

Purchased the psw505 and it should arrive tomorrow!! I'm really suprised as to how good the jamo speakers with the 667 sounds just by themselves so I cant wait to get this sub!

Oh no, not another Polk Sub! I wish I would have commented earlier that you should run the opposite direction very fast if you see a Polk sub on sale. THey are notoriously bad and its very easy for the discerning customer to fall into that trap since Polk makes great speakers in general, but terrible, terrible subs.

Good luck with your sub, however, if you don't like it, just rememeber, we tried to warn you .

If you're not into heart pounding bass, Polk PSW505 is fine. I used to own 12" HSU, and I own PSW505 now. The PSW505 fits my bill and my bass desired. The box is 2/3 the size of the HSU. It looks quite nice and packs quite of punch for a small box. It is very good for music. You'll enjoy the PSW505!
