We have a Vizio 32" that is having an issue that I cannot figure out how to fix. First off, it belongs to my daughter and boyfriend's daughter. When I turned it on, it made a humming/buzzing sound. Long story short, they had a cable hooked up wrong. I fixed it. During this process, the DVD I had in went from a distorted color/picture (almost cartoon like) to normal. I went back down this afternoon to check it out and it's back to the distorted colors and I cannot get a normal picture. The DVD player and TV have been hooked up together for over a year with no issues regarding color/display. I will try to post a pic. It is hooked up with the cable that came with the DVD player with the standard red/white audio, yellow video.

If anyone can tell me how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

My apologies if this is in the wrong spot. Please feel free to move it.

Assuming everything is correctly connected right now, try disconnecting the DVD player and connecting a different video source to the TV--preferably the same input port. If your distorted picture goes away, then you know its a problem with the DVD player being either in some weird mode, or completely broken. A new dvd player without blu-ray can be bought for around 20-30 bucks these days. However, if the distorted picture remains, then you know it is a problem with the TV. The next step after that would be to try connecting an input to a different input port on the back of the TV. It may turn out to be that one port, although that would be unlikely. If at that point you had tried multiple input ports on the the back of the TV with a video source other than your current DVD player (and other than the DVD you were playing), then it seems that you would have a broken TV on your hands, or at least a terribly miscalibrated TV.

Thanks! I hooked up another DVD player, same problem. On a good note, we bought them a surround sound system for Christmas that came with another DVD player. If this one hooks up differently, I will try it and hope that it was just a bad port. Thank you again!

No problem. Also what you could do is connect your DVD player with component cables or HDMI as opposed to composite-(red, white, yellow). That way your TV would bypass the composite interface, which could likely be the source of your problem. Hopefully one of your DVD players has at least a component interface. Try to post a picture of the distorted picture on your TV and a picture of the back of both of the DVD players so I can see the available connections, and the back of the TV where all the connections are. Also, on a side note, how experienced are you with video? For example, the difference between coaxial, composite, component, HDMI, HD-SDI, etc? Just trying to work out a solution...

Right now, I don't have component cables or HDMI cables and the nearest store is 30+ miles away. I don't know yet what the DVD player came with that is with the surround sound system. I haven't opened the box yet. I work at home and am still working until 5:30, so I'm trying not to spend too much time on that. lol I have no experience with video at all, but I do know the difference between the cables and hook ups. I'll see what I can do tonight and worst case scenario, I will be making a trip to walmart tomorrow night. Thanks again! I will post back on whether or not something works.
