Why does 3D on my PS3 look great but my HTPC has flicker?

I've played 3D content from my PS3 and it looks great with no flicker at all.

However, with my HTPC, when I switch to 1080p/24Hz the desktop and everything has a flicker to it and doesn't look very good.

...but 1080p/60 looks great from my HTPC.

My TV is a Panasonic VIERA TCP42GT25 and the HTPC video card is an nVidia GT430...

hmm no but I noticed that 1080p 24hz refresh rate has noticeable flicker in my 3d glasses, but when I select the 720p 60hz mode the flicker is gone... I'm using a lenovo t520 to output.. not sure how I can select 120hz refresh rate otherwise? Think I'm limited to 1080p 24hz or 720p 60hz ?


I should add, the flickering is in my glasses not on the screen, I have a Sony 55hx850... Not sure if this is hte original problem, but PS3 plays wonderfully, but lenovo t520 over hdmi the 3d at 1080p24 is very flickery in my glasses.. it's very odd.. not sure why ps3 plays (what im assuming is) 1080p24 3d okay...

A pc active 3D moitor is a 120Hz, hence 60Hz per eye. If you hook up your PC to a TV, you are reducing the image to 30Hz per eye, since no TV has a refresh rate of 120Hz only 60Hz, hence the flicker. Reason you dont get that from a Blu Ray is because the TV is decoding the format internally though HDMI, where as a PC is decoding and sending the signal directly to the TV as a connected display, but it sounds like the display is unable to correctly display the correct image at the correct Hz. What are you trying to play(file format) what kind of TV, and what software. Giving me this info can help determine a solution.

I've tried playing blurays through my PC using Arcsoft TMT, and trying to play Full/Half SBS using TMT as well (tried trials of WinDVD same result software didn't matter) My TV is a 55hx850 and my Lenovo T520 connects to it via Displayport->HDMI adapter

how about playing the video file with VLC and changing the 3d setting on the TV itself to side by side?

No offense and maybe I just don't know but that sounds all wrong to me...

Isn't it possible that you are detecting flicker at 24fps because the glasses are opening and shutting fewer times per second and so more slowly (ie at 60hz every on off cycle is 1/120 but at 24 fps each on of cycle is 1/48 second)?

You sure about that? The way I read it he is getting flicker with 24p content and not with 60...

This is correct! When my lenovo laptop outputs 720p60 there is no flicker in my glasses, but 1080p24 I get alot of flicker in the glasses... during the night it's okay because the screen looks good and everything else is dark so the flicker isn't as noticeable but during the day it's impossible unfortunately!

Is this possible? I wasjust under the assumption that my PS3 is outputing 1080p24 for 3D and it's confusing me why I don't see flicker then.

It depends on what kind of 3D. Frame packed Blu Ray 3D movie? I think it is possible 24 fps per eye.

Gaming will always be 60 fps (unless set otherwise in your settings) but won't ever be 24 fps as far a I know.

I'm pretty sure this is just a case of your visual threshold being able to resolve the 24fps flicker but not the 60fps flicker.

This is a large reason why people are looking towards 144hz active glasses for 24 fps material. The flash over twice as fast as 60 hz glasses and so you see even less flicker.
