Hi, wasn't sure where to post this so trying a thread here...

I have a sony vaio laptop (core2duo with nvidia 9600m gt) running win 7 32 bit, it has native 1080p resolution and has hdmi output as well - I tried connecting it to my sony bravia lcd (46ex500) directly via hdmi and also tried connected the laptop to my avr (yamaha rxv 467) - in both cases i get video just fine on my tv, but no audio....audio still plays on my laptop speakers. I googled and found that I had to turn hdmi digital to default in sound device manager, so i did that - still no sound, and when i try to configure/test the hdmi digital connection in sound manager it says this device is being used by another application - i don't understand that since there is no other application on....happens with both direct and thru-avr connections....here is a pic of the sound device manager etc...please help (and i apologize if this isn't the right thread for this)

I am not sure if this applies to your particular laptop but i know in others you must go into the BIOS and set the audio to be ouputted through HDMI. Give that a shot and see if there is such a setting.

Thanks for replying Zagor - I tried the bios, but its factory locked, only options available to change are how to boot into the system - In the laptop's manual it says to follow the steps I already talked about in my first post (enable and setting to default, the digital out, in sound device manager) in order to enable sound on an external tv....no joy yet

I tried my brothers HP laptop via hdmi and as soon as I enabled digital/spdif, thr was sound from the tv as well as when connected via AVR.....and I thought a sony tv - sony laptop would be easier to stick together lol

Been going through google searches and posts in forums to get an answer, but getting tired of that now, think i'll just stick in a wdlive :s

thanks again :-)

Can you select the hdmi port as your speakers?

hmm, unsure about that - the only place i see anything hdmi related is in the sound manager playback devices (the pic i posted in the 1st post) but the issue with selecting that is (1) it says this device is being used by another application (no idea who/what that phantom app is), (2) still no sound even after I force select hdmi digital audio as default device

In pc's device manager the sound controller has Realtek drivers for sound device and I think the hdmi digital device (hdmi port itself) has Microsoft drivers - i tried looking for updates buty both say they are up to date - maybe I should try another hdmi driver? any idea where I can find those, been looking on google but haven't come up with something

Do you have updated drivers for the vaio?
I had the same issue with my gf's vaio. I had to go into the audio manager (im doing this from memory right now so I may make up words), look for the different audio devices, noticed that my av/r receiver was listed as it was plugged in via hdmi, and I had to select that. If you just have realtek or whatever selected then that will be the audio output. You just have to find the right output for the audio and make sure that is what your computer is being told to use.

The playback device needs to be hdmi.

Tried that, still seems to be a problem - the 'this device is being used by another application' message is gone in sound check, and i get a flicker on my avr display as it tries to catch the signal but then nothing - I know the hdmi cable is fine because i just hooked it up with another pc to my avr/tv and all works well....sending it to Sony tomorrow, lets see what they say. Thanks for the input all.
