Well, the science that isn't fiction should be at least accurate. We don't expect scientific accuracy from fantasy such as Superman. (Read Larry Niven's short piece, "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" for a great analysis of certain problems Superman would have.)
Otherwise they might as well just tell the writers, "Anything is allowed, so nothing is forbidden. Invent any facts you need for your episode." Watch them suddenly and conveniently have helicopters we didn't see yet, for example, when the script calls for them.
