using 2x6s for the wings was the aesthetic choice, 2x4s would have been fine.

Also depending on the width and shape of the granite a mid brace may not be required.

I just built it right on top of my laminated floor -- and it is mobile, although it weighs a ton.

Don't get a table - instead put a nice, wooden bar with four to six nice, big and comfy bar chairs. People may prefer sitting at the bar instead of a "theater" seat more than you might think

You might want to investigate adjustable height training tables and counter height stools.

Bar height is around 42 inches and counters are 36. I did see some training tables that adjust to 36.

I'm considering doing the same sort or bar/table behind my first row seating. How does having that big reflective panel right behind your head affect the sound quality?

If you go with the 36" height that Big suggested, it probably wouldn't be a problem. My Berks are 42" to the top of the seatback and would totally block any reflections from the bar. Your head would be above bar height. Take a look at Big's link to see what I mean.

If you are worried, you could always upholster the front or just glue black short nap carpeting to the front face.

My bar is 43 inches tall measured from the floor not the riser. My chair backs, tall Berkline 045s are never below the top of the bar even in a reclined position. So most of the front side of the bar is blocked by the seating.

Here's My Bar/Island. it's just under 8' long. the granite top is 18" x 8' long and will be 42" high to the top of the granite, which is standard height.

Here's where I stand now.
I need to finish the trim and stain. I am going to bolt it to the floor, hopefully right throught the carpet. We'll see how that goes.

I don't think you will have a problem. Just get a hammer drill, and some 3/8" concrete anchors.

Granite can be expensive, but a piece of this size could be classified as a remnant and someone might be happy to cut it and radius the corners for you. I found that their are many granite suppliers advertising on craigslist. I just emailed all of them with my requirements and got quotes ranging from $250 to $800. The piece I ended up getting was $150, only because it is 3/4" thick instead of the more common 1-1/4 thick. I was hesitant at first about it looking cheap, but so far I'm glad I went with it because it was pretty heavy, I don't think I could lift the thick stuff.

Thank you. I will start framing next week for my basement and my wife and I decided on a wet bar with a similar bar top idea for folks that overflow into that area and want to watch the projector screen (120" screen).

Be real careful with a 3/4 piece of granite that long. It can break like a cookie much more easily than you think.

Carry it and lift it perpendicular to the floor, vs. parallel that makes any sense. This I know, if you have someone at each long end, and lift it the way it is now, it WILL break.

I also understand that quartz synthetic, like Dupont Zodiac is much stronger in this regard.

I was a cheap bastard, and bought a remnant of Zodiac, and picked up one end so see how heavy it was. Guy had a look of terrror, and told me if it was granite, it would have broke in the middle for sure (my piece was 7 foot long and 18 inches wide).

Yeah, i build a table very similar to this, but had a local iron/welder guy make the table to my specs, and then I had it powder coated.

Sorry to post on an old thread, but I was building something similar which led me to your pics. I was wondering where you purchased the bar stools and how much they were (if you don't mind)? Everything I see is really expensive.

Just one potential source for you to check, this is an auction house that handles local business liquidations and they get a lot of resturants. There are some bar stools up for bid right now. of course you have to buy the lot of 11

I forgot to update my finished bar, so here it is. I bought my stools on craigslist for $300 for 4 of them. I wanted Very thick padding and armrests and to buy them new would be too expensive.

Sweet. Any thought of putting in a foot bar?

I thought about it, but the footrests on the bar stools seem to be working ok. I might stretch a piece of oak across the bottom if I'm looking for a small project this winter.

Wow this is a great thread. Thanks for the pictures BIGmouthinDC and gelnd123. I wanted to build exactly what you have and I had it in my mind but I just couldntmake it come together!!! I will most likely base my back table on your design. Could you post the width dimension of the bar under the 8" wide granit?

Oh and great steal on the stools. I want something bulky and chusiony as well but dont want to pay a boat load from them. guess I will have to keep my eye on craigs list.
