I'd guess that most do not sit beyond 12'. That affords for a couch to be up against a rear wall (with your head 2-3 feet off the wall) and the tv on a stand against the wall (about a foot off) in a 16-17 wide/deep room. For a 12' viewing distance, the max recommended screen size is (around) 72".
(As a consequence of the pixel pitch associated with a 1980x1024 1920x1080
resolution display, max recommended screen size 'approx equals' one half viewing distance).
Moving to 4K2K resolution allows for watching (around) 144" displays at a 12' viewing distance . . . or, conversely, watching a 72" display from 6'.
(With a 4K2K display, max recommended screen size 'approx equals' viewing distance . . . and with better immersion).
So one requirement for moving to 100" or larger displays in 'average'|'smaller' homes would seem to be a progression to 4K2K resolution displays. Edited by SoundChex - 6/22/12 at 9:28am
