X-Men: First Class - Page 2

This comic book movie was pretty good. The whole cold war story was kind of campy and the side characters were pretty meh.... But the movie was carried by the leads McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Particularly Michael Fassbender who is becoming one of the better actors around. From his role in Fish Tank to Magneto he shows some major range and hes great in both.

Overall if your a fan of the genre I'm pretty sure you will like this. (1000x better then Thor) and even if your not its still fairly enjoyable. This would be my definition of a good popcorn flick.

I was not bothered with the liberties X-Men: First Class took with the X-Men mythos because I have never been heavily invested in any of it. Despite my high expectations, the movie was even better than I had hoped. Once again, Matthew Vaughn proved that he is one of the most talented and imaginative directors working today. The talent of the film's large ensemble cast also impressed me. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, and the sadly underutilized Oliver Platt are favorites of mine and all did great work. There was a brief cameo, which I won't spoil by mentioning the name of the star featured in it, but the scene was the funniest thing in the film.

Technically, X-Men: First Class was outstanding, with incredible special effects, beautiful visuals, and an immersive and big sounding soundtrack.

I really enjoyed X-Men: First Class. Highly recommended, 9 Stars out of 10.

Maybe tomorrow night as I'm awaiting for the initial crowds to die down a bit. If not, I'll catch it during the week.

I'm reading good things about this one in my travels but I'll be careful not to exceed my expectations. Amongst the latest flicks in the series I personally enjoyed Wolverine but not The Last Stand nearly as much.

I guess I have to see this again...while I enjoyed it I dont think I did as much as everyone else here...I watched the first 3 before this movie and I still enjoy the first two much more...I just see them as being of a bit more serious tone then the new one and better written...this one had too much of a 'comic book movie" feel to me. Which I realize thats what it is but I think x-men deserves a bit more serious tone like the first two or the batman movies but thats just me. And to be honest I'm not quite sure I ever believed Magnetos arc...to me he just seemed to be faking. I think the VERY end was a bit silly too...I know what they were trying to do but sometimes it just doesnt pan out so well on film imo.

X-Men is apparently drawing well. I saw it at a 10:15 AM showing and the theater was about 60 percent full, although it is scheduled for a total of 16 (!) showings today and tonight at that cineplex alone and a bunch more times at 9 other cineplexes in the OKC metro area. It sure seems as if a lot of folks around here are going to the movies these days.

Just came back from seeing this and was very pleased. Wife and I went to the first showing this morning and the top section was a few seats from being full. We both liked it very much, especially the scene when you know who was seated in that diner. Good to see other Marvel characters on display for the first time also. Acting, directing, special effects were great. I looked for Stan Lee's appearance but didn't see him. Did I blink? Quite a few stayed till the credits ended but no after credit scene this time folks. A lot to take in on one viewing. I'm sure I missed some stuff but that is what will make buying the BD a must. Just over a two hour movie and no drags anywhere. It will be interesting to see what the next installment will be about. I have 16 summer movies that I am on track to see. So far, so good on the "enjoyed meter."

It will not make 50 million over the weekend. Not a good sign, but word of mouth can make this film stick around. It's worth it. Truly.

I rather agree with this.
It was a fine film, but there were parts that were rather cheesy (the teen mutants in a room segments) and the whole trigger happy admirals climax bordered on camp.

I thought McAvoy and Fassbender were very good. It used to be said of certain stars that the camera loved them, and I thought this about Fassbender, the camera just loves him...

solid film with solid actors carrying it. after x3 and wolverine, this is the best i could have hoped for and the movie delivered.

count this as the only one. let them do it all over again if it's going to be
this kind of storytelling and feel. the fx could have been better on some parts but to me story comes first and this one doesn't disappoint. not perfect but

Good to know. I recentley actually decided to give this a miss but I will definitley put it down on my must watch list.

It looks like it will make a bit over 50 mill...probably somewhere around 55 mill...still below WOLVERINE and closer to WATCHMEN's debut. (And this is counting the Thurday midnight showings!) Not a great start, but it's ok. I'm on the fence about seeing it. I wasn't a big fan of ANY of the previous films (or the comics either). Just too many damned mutants. It is only the early 60s setting and the Connery Bond movie comparisons that might entice me to go.

The Bond thing is there for sure. Heck, if Daniel Craig left the role, Michael Fassbender can step right in as far as I am concerned. He rocks the house.

The 21 million Friday is widely being panned. As in, Ha! Movie is a mistake. it will fail. Hollywood puts everything into the first few days. I am hoping word of mouth makes it hold because it sure as **** destroys Wolverine and X3 as far quality go. They are simplistic insipid crap compared to this amazing film.

Honestly, I was pretty bored through much of the movie. I think Vaughn largely missed a big opportunity to have fun with the '60s setting. Other than a handful of miniskirts and a couple of split-screen montages, he basically did nothing with it. And whatever sex appeal the lingerie that January Jones was wearing might have had was entirely offset by the fact that she’s the WORST ACTRESS EVER. There’s just nothing sexy about a dead-behind-the-eyes woman who stands there and blankly stares off into the distance while other people talk.

The movie had too much CG and not enough emotion or fun. It felt rote and lacked energy. It’s certainly not as bad as the Wolverine movie, but I’d maybe put it on par with The Last Stand.

You clearly haven't seen the movie yet. Within the first five minutes, Rose Bryne strips down to a bra and garter belts, which she is all she wears for the opening act of the film. January Jones' superhero "costume" consists of a flimsy nightie and go-go boots.

I think this film is fantastic from beginning to end. It moves at a perfect pace and the characters are nicely established.

It is also one of those rare films to have a cameo that I enjoyed rather than cringed at.

Well, to be honest, that basically describes her role on 'Mad Men'.

You must have a serious reading comprehension problem. I didn't say that there weren't enough half-naked women in the film. I said that whatever sexiness January Jones' costume was supposed to have (and the sole purpose of her character was to stand around and look sexy) was negated by how awful an actress she is.

My complaint about the movie isn't a lack of sexy chicks. My complaint is that one of the major characters is played by a horrible, horrible actress who does nothing in the movie but stand around in her lingerie and stare blankly off into the distance.

A film critic friend of mine put this best when he wrote: "Bacon seems to be overacting in order to balance Jones's reliably vapid presence. Honestly, I don't know how Matthew Weiner makes her look like an actor on Mad Men, but it's a secret he's shared with no one else."

I was mildly dissapointed with it. It was much better than Wolverine: origins, but I don't think it was as good as X Men 1 or 2.

I liked that it seemed more character driven than action driven, but that is also one of my problems with it. Not enough action, and the action that was there wasn't spectacular. The character choices were pretty lame in some cases. I have no clue why the Angel character was in the movie. AT ALL. And can we please not have anymore movies where the black character is the first person to die(and only mutant by the way). I seriously thought we were kinda sorta past this kind of stuff. The changes to Xmen canon were puzzling and not needed. And like another poster said, it all felt too comic bookish and should have been handled with a more serious tone. I read a review where the critic said that anyone could have played Professor X because he didn't seem in any way like Professor X at all, and I would 100% agree with that.

The cameos(and one inparticular) were some of the best parts of the movie, and that is not a compliment at all.

It's a fun movie, but nowhere near where an Xmen movie should be. I personally thought Thor was a superior movie in most respects.

Now THAT is disappointing to hear! I've already come to grips that in THIS 60s era, no one smokes. But if the era is only represented by the outfits (which admiittedly, MIGHT be enough to get me to see it), then that's a serious angle lost.

I don't agree with assessment at all. Loved the film and loved the 60's setting. It felt like a 60's Bond film at times.

A black gentleman sitting in the back yelled out, "Hey, Tolken black man!" when the character first appeared. A few minutes later he said, "You know he gonna be the first to die! You watch!"

And when he was killed, he yelled out, "See! I told ya!" Then he started to rant and rant and eventually people started telling him to shut his mouth and he did.

True story.

He was no gentleman, he was a loud mouth fool that happened to be right (lol).

My opinion too. Regarding the Bond feel, that is exactly what I leaned over and told my wife during the movie.

I also mentioned in a post here that I didn't see Stan Lee in this movie and asked if I missed him somehow. No one answered the question so I'm asking it again. Thanks.

If they were being true to the period in that respect, they wouldn't have so easily accepted him in the first place, regardless of the fact that he was a mutant. Instead, they were chummy with him like his name was Chad.

Another reviewer also pointed out the fact that the other black mutant was the first to go over to the bad side when given the opportunity.
