Ontario Canada GG pricing

OK gents, I'm really on the fence with using GG within my build, and quite honestly cost is the biggest factor. I've used Ted's online calculator, and 2 pals or 4 cases of tubes is the amount I need.

Ted provides some great discounts via ordering online but I'd have to imagine shipping/brokerage into Canada would raise the cost to rediculous levels. So... are there any other Central/Southern Ontario members who can fill me in on the best spots to order Green Glue from..?

I need to get a real world quote to see if this is something I can work into my budget.

Thanks in advance all.

You need to talk to someone who could smuggle you a couple of buckets on there way up there to pick up prescription drugs.

Check out: www.acoustiguard.com. They are in newmarket I believe.

I got pricing from them a year ago and it was really expensive and shipping wasn't cheap either. Being from southern ontario, you may want to pick it up (it was an option when I got the quote). Even to drive from Ottawa and back, was still cheaper than their shipping.

The problem with ordering from the US is that Canadian customs are so fcuking stupid and have no idea how to do their jobs that despite telling them EXACTLY what the product is, how much it costs, where it's made, etc ... They cant even begin to tell you what brokerage, duties, and extra fees will be. It's freaking maddening.

Anywho, you can try and maybe have better luck. May the force be with you man.

So are they the people you ended up purchasing through...? I have friends in the Ottawa area that will be heading my way soon enough if you found something local to you that was cheaper.

I'm in Barrie (forgot to mention that part), so Newmarket is about a 35min drive for me....

I'll have to give them a shout and see what the "Canadian mark up" is...

Thanks

Let me know the next time you're making the trip

If you live somewhat close to the border you can have it shipped to a UPS store in Buffalo or someother border town. I've ordered a ton of car parts and done that. The UPS store will charge you about $5/box to hold it. Then drive down and get it yourself...

I actually haven't bought yet. The theater is on hold until the rest of the basement is done (the WAF hath spoken lol).

If the price was ok, it would definitely be cheaper to pick it up.

That's a great idea but the same issue of duties and brokerage applies, I believe.

Ya, depending on the item, "time served" in the States applies to the $$$ value of what you can bring back without penality.

Brokerage is strickly a carrier surcharge that they apparently have some type of futuristic equation to compute, and it varies and/or isn't charged depending on who you're using. It doesn't apply to things your personally transporting over the border.

Ah right. Brokerage is carrier based. Forgot about that.

At the end of the day, it's still likely a bit cheaper from the USA but who knows.

A quote is free and would end the mystery

I used GG.

You could use a postal service - US Addresses, 3909 Witmer Road, Niagara Falls, NY. First exit at Queenstown crossing. They receive my parcels as a paid for service, and act as my signing agent. (You need to pre-register with them.) Simply declare the product and cost at the border with your receipt ready, and you'll pay the 13% taxes due on converted Candian value. You save expensive brokerage fees as you do the importing yourself. For ebay purchases, I have the address paypal verified as a secondary address.

If you want their phone number and further details, pm me. They offer an excellent and very affordable service.

... I guess an email is in order. I'd still have to call your carrier of choice to sort out the brokerage fees though. Damn money grab...

Tedd: That's a very good idea. I had no clue there were companies offerring such services. I'll have to compare shipping costs, and see what the savings are. Although I'm sure it will be substantial.

There could be a PM in your future... thanks.

Shipping contained in the US is very affordable. Much cheaper then here. And that mailbox has seen some crazy internet bargains go through it.

Check your pm's smokinghot...

Or use a retained broker from the US based distributor.

Leave it to you guys to have the details sorted out before I even think of them...

I sent in my quote request Ted. Thanks for making it such an easy thing to do.

Soundproofingcompany got the best deal I could found on GG. Furthermore their service to answer my questions fast was just amazing.

Just make sure to pick USPS not fedex or UPS. You will save a lot of brokerage fees this way.
I haven't ordered Green Glue, but have ordered a pricey kitchen faucet and sink from the US and had them shipped to www.cbiusa.com. They're just over the Rainbow bridge and they hold the package for like $5 per package. Just pay the tax (no brokerage or duty - NAFTA) on the items you choose to declare.... I made a trip out of it with the family and went shopping and checked out the falls. It had been a while. Anyways, look into that type of option if shipping to Canada is ridiculous. UPS are the ones with the ridiculous brokerage fees. If you can use USPS then you should be good.

http://www.wilrep.com/

in mississauga. cheapest price i found locally.
Check out the Sound Isolation Store, they will beat Ted's prices and cheaper to ship. Shouldn't be any duties on GG, it is made in the US. Speak to Eric
post #24 of 31
Two points. I don't object to saving money; but,

1. I have spoken to the people at several of these other sources of isolation and damping products ... don't expect to get in depth knowledge on sound isolation from 'em.

2. It's really a cheap shot to be calling Ted, getting exceptionally knowledgeable advice (for free), then buying the products he recommends from other suppliers. In my mind, that's an ethics issue, not a "save money" issue.

I suppose Ted could lower his prices; but, then if you asked for advice, please have your credit card ready ... don't think we want to see that.

My $0.02

I wasn't saying he should order from another company, he only asked for "the best spot" to order Green Glue. That particular spot has better prices and cheaper shipping. However, Dennis, I would agree with you that he wouldn't get the same knowledgeable advice that he would receive from Ted.
Cheers
Damn...can't believe I missed this one (I'm in Ontario right now). Always wanted to be a GG "mule".
i just wanted to clarify my post about wilrep. i ended up buying my gg and sealant from ted and was very happy with the service, price and knowledge. i agree with dennis that its not the nicest thing to get "free" advice and then buy elsewhere. being about 20mins away from wilrep, i ended up buying some supplies months later from them and found that, although their prices were higher than ted, it made sense for me to buy from them as i saved on shipping. if you are not as close as i am and have to get it shipped, im not sure if wilrep will be cheaper as those boxes are heavy.

Just did a quick check and this is simply not so at all. We've never let something like price get in the way of completing a job. I think 12 years of testimonials will prove that point.

If you allow someone to spend a great deal of time on a design, the least you can do is ask if they'll match a lowball offer.

FWIW, I chose to deal with Ted & John. In fact I didn't even bother shopping their price at all. Now with that said, my timing with my pricing inquiry to them managed to get me locked into a sale price, and I'm currently trying to take advantage of an exceedly kind offer from another AVS member for a US pick up to save on shipping costs.

However the biggest factor for me using The Soundproofing Company was indeed their service. I'm all for saving money, but I find in this world of internet shopping and call in service centers located in countries half way around the world. The personal touch that Ted and John provide even their "potential" customers is definately worth the small additional cost you may endure.

I've already reccomended them, and will continue to do so.
