An interesting Website – Theater Invite.com

I found a cool website www.theaterinvite.com and thought I would share it. A quick over view of what it does is lets you create invitations for movies you are going to show that you email your friends.
* It starts by letting you recreate your theater room/ living room.
*You can make menu your friends can choose from.
*When you choose a movie that is in their system it comes up with the movie poster, actors, movie length, rating, etc.
*You can choose different marquees that will be on the invitation you send.
*You can name your theater and that will show on the invitation.
*You can choose if you want general admission or reserved seatingfrom the room builder it labels each seat for the purpose of reservation.
*Before the movie starts a reminder is sent by email and soon text.
*A new feature they have is you can send them a pic of your room and they can incorporate it into the reservation selection.
* There are other things I left out because I didn't want to rant on so just go check it out.

This website defiantly deserves a look because it's a cool idea because it adds an extra dimension to your home theater experience.

YOu have very few posts so I have to wonder if you're affiliated.

Honest question, but still cool.

Nope I actually work for the City I live in. I heard about this website from the HT Guys, went to it and thought it was a great idea that needed to be shared. The reason for so few posts is that I don't have much to say because my knowledge base isn't the greatest and don't want to steer people in the wrong direction.
this site has been discussed in an existing thread in the construction forum too. I have signed up, but have not used their free e-vites yet.
Cool, thanks for sharing this.
I think I missed the other thread when it came out.
I saw this yesterday and actually signed up and used it for a small gathering we are having Thursday night. It works well. I really like how you can layout your home theater and your guests can actually reserve the seat they want.

It worked well, was easy to use, and I will probably use it again.

I also heard about this site and went and checked it out. Haven't signed up yet, but it looks useful. Also, I would highly recommend the HT Guys podcast for those who are new in the hobby, they really helped me out.
OK, that is pretty cool. Signed up, did my room and sent out my first invite. It's really slick IMHO.
I already signed up and used it last weekend. Everyone loved it. Very slick and easy to use (although I still don't know how to find out what people select for snacks.)
Hi,

Currently you can find out what food/snacks guests have reserved by clicking on the "Events" button and finding your movie event. In the movie event box, click the "Reservations" link. On the next screen you should see the "Shopping List" on the right side of the screen.

We don't currently list snacks by individual guest, but that has been on our (very long) to-do list. It's working it's way to the top. Soon we should have a much better shopping list (probably a pdf file that you can print) as well as a breakdown of requests by individual guest.

Thanks for the feedback!
The only other issue that I see right now is that when you type something like "Coke Zero" in the drink section, it only displays "Coke" later. Same thing with snacks. If you type "Chocolate Covered Almonds", it only displays "Chocolate". It drops anything after a space.

Hey PeterB123,

We haven't been able to reproduce the bug you see where the menu item words are dropping off after a space. Would you be willing to contact us directly using our contact form (link at bottom of page at TheaterInvite.com)?

Let us know what OS and browser you're using.

Thanks!

Same bug experience here.

second word of menu items drops after space.

XP Pro
IE
Thanks for the additional feedback. It helped a lot. The bug should now be fixed. It was a bug that seems to only affect IE.

Most of us use Firefox, Chrome or Opera when developing/programming. We use IE to test everything for compatibility, but I'm embarrassed to say that we somehow overlooked that bug on the menu screen.

Thanks!

Instead of using the room builder I went with the add on feature to take a picture of my living room and use that as the way my friends reserve seats. Also I had a party a week or so ago and they absolutely loved that they could see my living room and pick an actual place for them to sit.
Looks like a fun way to invite your friends for movie night. Very cool.

@TheaterInvite - Neat service but your sectional configuration tool doesn't include an options for curves or a chaise. Unfortunately, without those two (common) seating types, we can't really use it in this kind of common HT configuration.

Hi Rob,

We are very willing to add furniture to the Room Builder.

If you would be willing to contact us directly via the contact form on our website ( http://www.theaterinvite.com/contact.html ), so we can get more information about your furniture layout, we'll see if we can get it fixed up for you.

Specifically, if you could send us an overhead photo or drawing (or find one on the internet), it would help a lot. Once we see exactly what you need, we'll create the SVG images of the furniture and add it to the Room Builder.

Thanks!

That's perfect! Their "Detailed Dimensions" page gives a complete overhead view with all the measurements.

I'll let you know as soon as we have these new furniture objects integrated into the Room Builder.

Thanks!

Another request that might be too much of a PITA, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I love movies, and will watch most. Many times, I want to invite people to watch a movie, but I don't necessarily have a specific title in mind or I want my guests to pick one.

What I'd love to have is, for lack of a better description, a poll. I'd love to be able to list 3, 4 or 5 movie titles and let the invitees 'score' them in order of interest.

This way, I could list the 2 or 3 newest movies I have and maybe throw in a movie or two that a lot of people missed due to them having a low marketing budget or being an indie film.

This way I can plan a movie event through your terrific site without dictating what is seen.

Hey Rob,

We've added a chaise and a corner unit to the "sectionals/sofas" tab in the Room Builder (and the Theater Planner). I built a quick mock-up of your sectional:

http://www.theaterinvite.com/theater...eifsvfvxg2nskv

The one I built is pretty much to scale with the dimensions from the link you sent. Hopefully these two new pieces will work for you. The Room Builder understands these are 'seats' and should allow guests to reserve them.

Let me know if you have any questions or need help setting this up.

Thanks,

Lance

PeterB123,

Your suggestion is a pretty good idea. We had a similar idea that we had tossed around a while back and that was to allow guests to make suggestions of movies to watch. We never quite hashed out how it would work or if it would even be worth adding.

Your idea seems a little more focused than ours.

Our to-do list is pretty long (and has some really cool things on it). I can't promise you that we can get to your suggestion right away, but I think it has merit and it seems like something that might be of benefit to a lot of people.

Thanks!

Thanks Lance! It looks good to me. I just set up an account, set up my room, and invited someone over for a movie tonight! It's very usable for me now. Some thoughts (in no particular order):

1. I had to add myself as a guest in the system because I wanted to be able to reserve my own seat. But it wouldn't take the e-mail address I used when I set up my account (and it silently failed). So I had to use a different e-mail address to make it work like I wanted it to work.

2. On the reservation screen, the gray seats look pretty boring compared to all of the other pretty graphics. It would be nice if users could pick a color other than gray for the seats. In my case, I would have picked brown.

3. For the TV / screen, I think I'd like it to be a solid rather than out outline.

4. Since we're all HT nuts, it would be cool if we could put speakers into the design (and resize them as appropriate).

5. For the seat selection, I'd recommend that you change the color of the whole seat rather than use the circles with a cross out. I'm thinking of how it works on the airline sites so it's more immediately apparent that a seat is taken or not taken. And graphically I think that would be more 'readable' than the circle/crossed-circle.

Anyway, great job on the quick add to your system!

You don't have to register as a guest to reserve a seat for yourself (the system shouldn't let you sign up as a guest with the same email you used to sign up as a home theater owner).

To reserve a seat for yourself, set up a movie event like normal. Then, find your event on the "Events" page. Click the "Reservations" link next to the movie event. Then click "View/Modify Seating Arrangement". You will then see your reservation screen and you can click on any seat and reserve it for yourself or someone else. You can also move people to different seats, delete reservations, etc... I thought we had a quick video demo of this function on the site, but it hasn't been posted yet. You can see it hear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDSFBZvXZc8

That is something we talked about. All the seat/furniture are SVG images (vector) and because of a compatibility issue with the way flash is currently rendering gradients, it's not easy for us to make the seats different colors. We hope we can find a way around this in the future.

I think you should be able to do both of these things (i think). In the Room Builder is a tab labeled "Walls". On that tab you will see several blocks that can be resized. You can use them as speakers, to simulate walls and I think you could actually place one on top of the screen object so that it would be solid black instead of the outline. Go into the Room Builder and click on the 'Help' button (lower-right). At the top of the Help screen, you will see a video labeled "Create Walls, Speakers, etc". I think that should quickly give you the info you need to do what you are trying to accomplish.

We discussed that at length too ;-) Some people use actual renders of their room or even photos of their room. When guests click on the seats we would not be able to change the color of the reserved seats on the render/photo reservation screen, so we opted for the crossed circle so it would work across all the different types of reservation screens. However, that doesn't mean that we won't 'fix' this in the future.

We had/have so many things on our to-do list that it become necessary to do some things in their most basic form for version 1 just so we could get the system usable enough so that people could use it. Hopefully as time goes on we'll be able to add a lot of features and make some of the basic functions a bit prettier and more functional.

Thanks for all of your feedback! We really appreciate it.

Lance,

Thanks for the site, it's very cool.

I've been throwing it up on some of the other forums I visit, such as:

Lance,
Is there a way to select a sports team as the movie title and have the team logo come up as the movie poster?
Hi,

We don't have sports team 'movie covers/posters' right now. However, when you are selecting the movie to show, you can choose 'Manual Movie Entry', which will allow you to type in the title, actors, etc... For a sporting event, you could type something like "Dodgers vs Padres" or "NBA Playoffs". The info you type in is then placed on the invitation and on the movie marquee on your theater page.

We're planning to allow users to upload their own cover art for situations just like this, but we haven't completed that function yet. For now, it will just display the "No Poster Available" image.

We hope to finish the custom "cover art" image upload feature soon.

In the past, we have created a poster for major sporting events that would be of interest to lots of people (for example, we created a 'Super Bowl' poster and entry). If you have a major sporting event like that coming up, let us know and we'll try to make a custom entry for it.

Lance,

What is TheaterInvite's policy for sharing email addresses, etc? I couldn't find a privacy policy on your site. I signed up last night and sent an invite to myself and within a few hours received a spam from another site thanking me for signing up. Not sure if related or not but it sure seemed so.

I really like the site and think its a great idea but I have always been leery of submitting other folks email addresses for the above reasons.

Although I did not read through it, there is a policy link at the bottom right hand corner of the website.
