Possible bad news regarding Casio DVD/CD printers

A supplier just told me today that they haven't been able to get three packs of the ribbons for the printers, and are now having to sell singles (and they're struggling to get supplies of those).

The reason? He said it seems Casio is discontinuing the printers.

So much for making reasonably nice looking DVDs.

Guess there's the old standby... A Sharpie pen.

Well, you scared me. So, I found three packs in stock at B&H. I ordered four, black, at $19.99 per. Oddly, blue now costs more than black. It was cheaper. I saw combo three packs at Amazon, blue/red/green, for less than $12 each.

Even if Casio stops making the labelers, surely they must continue to produce ribbons for them, at least for a few years. Isn't there a law on how long parts must be available?

The law of supply and demand?

These ribbons must be available from many, MANY places. I can't believe that this is the only printer that uses these ribbons.

I got my single black ribbons for $8.40 each.

If a three pack cost $19.99, you paid nearly $2 less than I did, each.

Grrr...

Someone please tell me what "B&H" stands for!

Can someone here please show me a picture of these Casio

I was looking for a disc labler myself.

The one that I use is apparently no longer available. Here are links to some others of the same family.

The last one might not be available anymore either. If you click on the infoation buttons, it has the technical details for these models.

I own two HP C5550 (all-in-one) printers that are excellent for printing directly on ink jet printable DVD's or CD's. "Sure Thing" provides inexpensive software that incorporates a variety of features for printing on the discs or making a cover. The unit comes with a tray that loads the DVD into the machine for image printing. Excellent quality.

VLC DVD playing software enables you to store a paused image from a DVD to a hard drive for printing on a disc. You can also use these type images to print covers.

And are these HP C5550s still available? At what price?

From what I've seen, computer printers that will also do DVDs and CDs are no longer being sold.

I checked HP's website and it does not list the C5550 ink jet printer. Based on that I would say this model HP is no longer sold. I did not find a printer on the HP site that included the printing on DVD/CD feature. Epson listed one printer, 725, that prints on DVD/CD.

Based on the popularity of DVR's recording shows on DVD's may not be very popular resulting in the lack of printers that print on DVD/CD's. That is why I purchased two of the HP C5550 printers.

I wonder how many people still make CDs and even DVDs on their computers, even if only to store data?

You'd think there'd still be as much call for such printers, since there has NEVER been all that big a DVD recorder market to warrant them. There must have been other reasons, reasons that can't have gone away.

I ordered some 3-pack black ribbons (then out of stock) and some 3-color-packs (in stock-- I figured I could use the blue and the green if no black availabe) from J&R. Got an email that they were shipped today, should arrive on Mar 8, UPS from NY to Washington State.

DVDs on the PC are still being sold in the hundreds of millions each year. It is still the best and least expensive per gigabyte for any portable format out there. Several Printers are still being made with disc printing attachments.
