Costs:
Equipment $311,964.00
Labour $142,384.00
Electrical & Infrastructure $660,420.00
Total $1,114,768.00

'The Challenge'

To ensure that all the electronic architecture and components within the five-storey, heritage-listed, stand-alone converted warehouse in Sydney were;

* Totally hidden within the five-storey structure
* Simple to operate

The brief also included automatic climate control by:

* Opening and closing of the louvres and motorised roof
* The control of air-conditioning systems and floor heating to maintain a constant ambient air temperature throughout the home
* Pumping of hot air from the top of the building to the bottom

The residence had to include maximum re-use of water and minimal power consumption.

All of the above needed be able to be achieved in an automated or manual way; attended or unattended.

I wonder.. what is the carbon footprint for the manufacture, delivery and installation of $1M of equipment?

Equipment here down under costs a LOT more than it does in the US. Even with the Aussie Dollar being at parrity, costs are still often double or tripple what you would pay in the states.

Exactly. When do the power savings equal the initial cost? 20 years out? 30 years out? By then, the equipment will have been replaced.

I'm all for being more energy-efficient, but you have to look at cost-benefit.

We are building a house in about 4 years time and want to have full home automation. I am seriously considering buying as much of the stuff as I can in the states and shipping it back in a container. I am sure it would still only cost me half as much once I pay tax and duty and shipping costs, and flying an installer out here to do the job. Anyone know an installer who would like a holiday in OZ
