I don't totally understand the intricacy of how 3D content is made but I was wondering, Is it possible to convert existing home videos to 3D?

If it was made using 2 cameras setup esp for the purpose of making them 3D.

otherwise... You could run them though various 2D to 3D convertors but it's all "faked" by guessing at what should have depth.

I think most or all 3dHDTVs have the ability to "fake" 3D.

powerdvd ultra has a slider that you can adjust the 3D on. So that's the best sw solution right now.

Just use Pulfrich glasses, bits the crap out of any converter.

I've never seen the Pulfrich effect but I've seen plenty of Youtube "3D" trailers made by people who do the 1-frame delay gag, and it looks nothing like the realtime conversions. Which is to say, it looks worse than utter crap D:

There are programs that do real-time conversion, like PowerDVD 10 and Total Media Theater 3. The quality is inconsistent, but it may be worth looking into.

3D converters have zero specular effects meaning that the water or glass will never be seen as transparent and all textures will look like paper stains and all other specular effects will never be present.
Above all that the converters are guaranteed to give always a false depth.
Using Purlfrich glasses you will see many scenes with true stereoscopic effect due to camera's horizontal motion or object's rotation.
Another advantage of Pulfrich is automatic operation which detects motion parallax and presents stereoscopic effect immediately.
If no motion parallax exist the Pulfrich method will project 2D scene without false depth.

I just experienced the Pulfrich effect with one sunglass lens over my left eye. Hah. No need to spend time and money...

You'd be better off just doing a Youtube search of "Pulfrich," to see the approved scenes where the effect does work properly though. Realistically, a movie or TV show isn't going to have but a handful of those kinds of scenes, and they'll be extremely brief. It's not worth sitting through hours of half-darkened, flickery picture and discomfort of paper lenses.

I hate realtime converters with a passion, but I can at least defend their quality against the Pulfrich method.
