Official Sharp 3D XV-Z17000 Owners Thread

I know the MSRP is 5000, but I'm not going to spend a cent over 3000. Have you gotten yours yet?

So dogone, Did you get that Sharp? I'm wanting to know what you think and is the DLP brighter than the Sony and JVC. I'm sure others are waiting to hear too!

I have the Dla-x3 and not happy with the brightness and color:-(
The 8700ub black, brightness and color are much better then x3

I have my 3D Sharp up and running. Anyone else here also have same in operation?

I do and I think this projector is simply amazing! If you can get around the limited installation possibilities, this is simply a fantastic projector, 2d and 3d.

I'm currently just throwing onto a white wall (which looks great) but I've been looking for a good screen. I'm currently throwing 125" diagonal picture and must say it's a bit dark (for my very picky tastes) when viewing 3d material (nighttime, very limited ambient light). I'm hoping a screen with a 1.27 gain will give it the extra juice I'm looking for in 3D. Or am I just throwing too big a picture?

Hopefully we can get this owners thread buzzing as this really is a projector worthy of a lot of attention.

I'm planning to order one of these projectors but I'll need to ship it overseas.
Does anyone know the shipping weight and the box size?
All the specs on web are just for the projector (not the box it's in).

My Film Mode setting is not operational on the menu...is this to be expected?

Finally got the projector mounted this weekend. I've had it for 3 weeks but haven't had the time to get it hung. Well, shame on me...this thing is amazing.

My setup:
PS3 (320gb) -> HDMI -> Sony STRDH810 (7.1 AVR) -> HDMI -> XV-Z17000 -> 88" wide Goo Systems DIY screen.

Fantastic 2D color, density and clarity. But when you run 3D, it's amazing. I haven't yet run a movie in 3D, but GT5 and Black Ops in 3D are so realisitic. You get the feeling that you're inside the game.

So, I have the 3D depth set at +13, which gives a great depth of field (into the screen). It seems more natural than a negative depth (out of the screen), at least for these games. I don't know how it is with a movie yet.

It's expensive, but a fantastic entertainment investment...highly recommended.

The box is (estimating now) about 22" x 24" x 12". I'd estimate the weight at about 20 lbs.

Sorry, I'm not at home right now, but I just mounted my projector this weekend, so it's pretty fresh in my mind. I didn't weigh or measure the box tho. Hope this helps.

I've read this PJ can be only ceiling of coffee table monted.
Is it possible to mount it upside down on the back shelve or wall?

What brand of 3D player are you using with your 3D Sharp?

Anyone else with any experience with this PJ? Looks like there are some good sales on this thing online.

The problem is not mounting upside down. The problem is the projector should be mounted a fixed distance above or below the screen, and that distance is something like 0.15 times the viewing height of the screen. What that means if your screen is say 54 x 96, the projector needs to be mounted about 8 inches above or below the screen unless you want to use electronic keystone correction and that is a big no no for obtaining best picture quality.

That's good to know. How far down would it usually hang from the ceiling? Or is this dependent on the type of mount?

Iamcdn22. Yes it depends on the mount. The projector is mounted upside down and one needs to know the distance from lens center to the bottom of the projector. When mounted, the bottom of the projector faces the ceiling. Then you need the mount dimensions, pole if using one, and flange (ceiling plate) dimensions. I haven't look the projector dimensions up and of course the total drop from the ceiling to lens center will be dependent on the mount and mounting system chosen. If there is plenty of room, a longer pole (adjustable or a custom piece of pipe purchased at Home Depot (they have all sorts of short lengths pre threaded on both ens (called 1.5 inch pipe nipples NT threaded). Generally, when installing, we put the whole mess including projector together and fiqure out the needed length of the pipe to makre the lens center the exact height we need. My guess is that with a normal Chief mount, using a no length pipe (about 2 inches of threads only), yoy will hasve it drop about 11 inches or so. But there are choices and with the right mount you could get it to about 7 inches or so.

Just when i was about to pull the trigger on a 8700UB this baby shows up, now i have to wait for more reviews on this one.

Only one page? Where's all the other owners at? I need a new projector and this one sounds like a good option. Are the 3D goggles the same that they use on their latest 3D lcd tvs or will they not work on both? I need a new tv too and having the same goggles for both would keep costs down.

Where are the comments for this projector? does it even really exist?

This is an interesting projector, but the lack of lens shift at this price point is a deal breaker for me. IQ wise, it look like they took the older 15000, added 3D and jacked up the cost by a significant margin.

3k street w / lens shift would have been an easy purchasing decision since the DLP is the only proven 3D technology that can avoid the dreaded ghosting we see in the 2011 LCOS 3D models.

The XV-Z17000 will be reviewed in Home Theater's August issue.

With new models being announced only one month later at the CEDIA EXPO 2011 tradeshow (September 7-10), this review won't influence anyone's purchasing decision, IMO.

Surely, Sharp's second generation 3D projector would be worth the short wait....right???

Hey all. I am looking at picking up this projector soon for my new media room and I was wondering if any of you could help recommend a good mount.

Due to the limited placement options, I would like the projector as close as possible to the ceiling so that the screen can be at my desired height off of the ground.

What mount fits the Sharp well and would let me minimize the distance from the ceiling to the center of the lens? And how close can I realistically get this distance to be?

Any other considerations I should keep in mind when selecting a mount?

The projector needs to be mounted so that the center of the lens is 0.15 times the screen H dimension above the top of the screen. Chief has some close to ceiling mounting options and you can probaby get it to be withing about 8 inches from the ceiling to the lens. If you are interested, I can get you the exact distance possible.

It sounds like Chief is the go to brand in general. Any reason to look at other brands?

No. I have used a variety of mount brands over my years and the Chief mounts are easy to adjust and lock and once locked are sturdy and don't move.

What brand of 3D player is anyone using with their 3D Sharp proj.?

Panasonic 210. Works beautifully.
