JVC X3/RS 40 versus Runco LS3 or new LS HB

Everyone
I would like to upgrade my HT. I currently have a Panasonic 900U that I purchased over 5 years ago.

The 2 projectors that have caught my eye based on reviews and reading these threads are the JVC X3/RS40 and the new Runco LS HB.

I have a few questions. Some folks have said that DLP projectors are sharper than other projectors and the JVC might be a little "soft". Others swear by the look of the JVC projectors. I am trying to line up demos of the projectors but it will take some time since I have to call around to various dealers.

While I love to watch movies, I also enjoy Football, Basketball, etc. Intuitively, I would think that a sharper image is one that I would like.

Any thoughts out there about this issue of softness on the JVC and sharpness on the runco DLP?

Some folks have said that some people have an issue with the color wheel on single chip DLP's. There is a rainbow effect or something? Could someone explain this?

There is a price difference between the JVC X3 and the Runco but I'm willing to spend more if it is truly going to be better for my purposes, movies, tv, sports.

My HT is in my living room. If I turn all the lights off on the first floor the room is pretty dark. However, I the Runco HB is appealing because it would be nice to be able to have people in the kitchen (adjacent to the living room) and still use the projector. The Runco HB has a very high lumens. Of course, by having such a high lumens, I'm not sure what I'm giving up when I do use it in a dark room.

Any suggestions about these projectors or any other in the $8,000 and below range, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks
Rick

Welcome to the forum. The best advice for anyone would be to see each technology for yourself then ask questions based on what you liked and did not like during your demo.
There numerous threads if you use the search engine that answer your questions but regardless what anyone says you really need to see these with your own eyes. Best of luck.

Contrast. This is the trade-off with that unit. How significantly it affects real world performance is an interesting question.

CSMS Contrast Ratio: >177:1 (ANSI); 1164:1 full-on, full-off

Rick,
I upgraded from a Panasonic 900 to a JVC RS-10 about a year ago. the RS-10 is in a different league than the Panasonic in every area. The Panasonic is known to throw a soft image due to "smoothscreen" technology that was designed to minimize pixel structure. I'd be really surprised if you found one of the new JVCs (now two generations past my RS-10) lacking in sharpness.

here is an older, but still descriptive, explanation of the dlp rainbow effect. The aticle also explains why single chips will be sharper than their three chip counterparts.

The spec of the Runco LS-HB and LS-5 show they both use the same 230W lamp. The difference in light output (2,700 vs 1,000 lumnes) has to come from somewhere - in this case it is not because the HB has a more powerful lamp. Runco is most likely adjusting the color calibration of the HB to get more light out.... Some people find color accuracy issues a deal breaker, others could case less. I'd really recommend viewing the HB in light and dark setting before making a decision.

are you interested in 3D?

-good luck

Wow that "CineGlide" lens option on the Runco sounds very interesting, but @16K that garners a "sigh..."
