Hi everyone.

Maybe someone of you can give me some advise. I bought yesterday the S380 player (in Australia) and was happy that it could even play DVD's with a european country code. But when I connected my 1 TB USB NTFS drive it couldn't play everything. For example it couldn't play .jpeg or .mp3 files and the weirdest thing was that it played some .avi files but not all of them.
Is it maybe because I don't use a HDMI cable?

I'm really lost at the moment so if somebody could help me it would be great.

Check page 25 of the manual, there it lists media format compatibility:

In particular, in will play .avi files that contain xvid encoded video only (which likely means it won't handle divx for example).

jpeg and mp3 it should handle though - maybe you've got some corrupt files? Try different jpegs and mp3s to see if it happens on all of them or just some.

Is there any chance to see if the file is actualy a XviD.avi or an DivX.avi? Is it possible to convert from DivX.avi to XviD.avi?

Regarding the jpeg / mp3 issue. I went trough several folders but it couldn't find/play any of them...

Purchased a very large drive to handle my very large files from my Sony Handycam CX 150.

Sony support was of no help They assumed the drive did not have it's own power supply.

I upgraded the firmware of the hard drive AND the firmware of the BluRay player.

Any suggestions?

How to convert divx to xvid

I've never tried it but it looks like it would be easy.

Anyone have any tips for quickly finding a specific movie or TV show on Amazon VOD? I don't see a search option, and the only sort option I see is "Default." Am I missing something? It's pretty tedious having to scroll through screen after screen of selections just to find the one I'm looking for.

EDIT: I received a couple of internet content updates on my 380 yesterday and there's a search option in Amazon VOD now. What a big improvement.

Hey guys! A freind of mine just picked up this player and i am going to burn some dvd's from mkv files and was wondering once he puts the dvd in what menus does he go through to start playing the disk?
I have a JVC and Sammy and i know some players have different menus to play mkv dvds.

I just need the Sony version walkthrough for him.

Edit: oh, burned on a DVD - not sure, actually haven't tried that, so not sure what UI you'd see, sorry.

if u stick a USB flash in it, it'll load slightly faster

The AVI movies can be played via DNLA. I tried to burn them into a DVD as ISO9660 format for S380 to play. But player said cannot find available files. Is there any specific format to burn data DVD ?

I have a question. When playing Queen Rock Montreal, which has a DTS-HD HR 96khz audio track using the "mix" setting having the player decode the audio and send PCM to my Denon, it displays 96khz when I press the display button, but when I check the Denon receiver to see what it is receiving, it says 48khz. If I bitstream to the receiver, the Denon displays 96khz. There is definitely an audible difference. Has anyone else had any experience with this type of situation? There isn't a setting for frequencies, unlike my S360, but that won't didn't send DTS-HD tracks as PCM, only bitstreamed.

I was initially a little worried about this, but the unit and discs are not warm or hot after watching a normal length (2 hr.) movie. For the record, my S360 which had a fan did not make any noise at all. Overall, I prefer the build of that machine, but the S380 is much faster and the navigation much smoother.

Target has the S380 on clearance sale for $98. I bought one for the bedroom (I have an S370 on the main TV). I'm guessing an S390 is coming out soon (and probably matching 490 and 590.)

Rename the files from .avi to .mkv. I also have the best luck with ISO/UDF format.

I was wondering if anyone may be able to offer me any advice. I recently purchased a Sony BDP-S380 Blu-Ray Player with the approved Sony wireless dongle to enable me to update the player over the internet and make use of the video streaming feature iplayer, Love Film etc.......

However having recently had a reminder that there is a new firmware version available I try to download it. The player starts the download runs for a few steps and then stops and displays the following message "Communication with the sever interrupted. Please try later" This happens every time i try!

I know the player is connecting to both the router and the internet, because when I log on to the router the player is listed as an online client and I can also watch iplayer without a problem, proving the internet connection.

If anyone can shed any light on this problem and any possible ways to resolve it, it'd be much appreciated.

The main reasons for buying this player were its ability to update online (due to having no facility to burn an update file to disk and update this way) and its Love Film streaming feature, which I can't currently use until I manage a successful update.

have you tried to update it with a cat5 wire and no wireless?

Geez, my S380 called for another update today. That's two updates less than two weeks. I wonder if the October update broke something?

I just bought a Sony BDP-S380 and installed Sony's Media Remote app (v2.3.2) for the iPhone.

I got Netflix working (which required registering the player with Sony's website for some bizarre reason) but I can't get the remote working.

The app finds my Blu-ray player and the player says it is registered, but when I hit the registration button on the app is says "registration failed".

I can't think what I could be doing wrong.

I have updated the S380's firmware and it seems to work fine in all other respects.

Do you have your iPhone connected to the same network that your player is on? It has to be connected to your wi-fi in order to find the player.

If it is connected, then you might not be hitting the right screen in the BD player settings in order to properly register the iPhone. I made that mistake when I first tried to connect mine.

You were right, I was using the wrong screen on the BD player. Seems there are two places on the menu where you "register" and they're not the same (even though it says your device is now registered!). I don't know why Sony had to make it so bleedin' complicated.

Yeah, it's tougher than it needs to be. Glad you got it working, though! The Media Remote app makes life easier, especially when you want keyboard input.

Since the most recent update I'm having frequent network problems with my S380. About every other time I turn it on it won't connect to my network. Rebooting it usually fixes the problem, but it's annoying. I never had that problem before.

Anyone else experiencing that?

when you play a 24p mkv/m2ts file to this machine will it switch its output to match the source or as with many other players does it stick at 60hz??

also does streaming these files work over a network to a nas?

Hello, can somebody confirm for that this BDP-S380 can play SACD or not? since I got different information online, how is the sound? I know you shouldn't expect more for this money, but how it compares to PS3 in picture quality and sound? and also can this player output bit-stream audio?

Haven't tried SACD, but it says it works - don't have a PS3 to compare to, but it works great - high resolution 7.1 formats are supported (DTS MA, Dolby TrueHD).

Edit: oh, I did have trouble reading a couple burned Blurays from a friend - but could have been bad burns, not sure.

Nice to see you here again, Brad. I prefer to use bitstream output to let my SR7005 do the decode job, but looks like this player can also do it great. Is bitstream output an option in the menu?
BTW, what is the difference b/w S380 and S580? they are only $30+ difference, should I spend this $30 more for S580 or just get the cheapest S380?

The 580 has WiFi, 3D and 1G of RAM built-in.
