Hey, Yeah...what gives? I am seeing you pop on all the time...and I haven't been playing nearly as much this summer....
Maybe there's no child labor laws in your state?

"Kids...paint that wall!!! Dad's gotta go kill some terrorists!!"

Haha how did you know this? In all honesty my son is on there more than I am so the painting was left entirely up to my wife....hence the "magic hand"

You know what this thread hasnt seen in a while?? Thats right a complementary wood pile.

Painting trim/casing to wrap the rack and the dvd shelf.

Heres on showing a better look of the ceiling as well as the screen wall that will NOT stay white...lol

Rack getting trimmed out. I used painters tape when I touched up the nail holes and such

And her resting place...

On the back side I did basically the same thing with the trim

Back side of the rack (left) five boxes....1-dedicated 20A outlet tied to the projector and panel, 1-dedicated 15A outlet tied to switch in the theater for rack fans and lights in the rear of the rack, 1-monoprice pass through wall plate for dual hdmi runs to projector and rear wall, 1-keystone wall plate for 2 subwoofer cable runs and 1-3 speaker plate for rears and right mid.

Back side of the rack (right) two boxes....1-5.1 monoprice wall plate for LCR,left mid and 3rd sublocation (other speaker terminal open) and 1-3 keystone CAT5e wall plate for 3 internet runs from upstairs. Wall plates to be added soon.

And to think you guys thought I was spending my time slacking off or playing XBOX?!?! Hmmmm the lack of respect I tell ya....

Dude,

You have been one busy guy. Everything looks fantastic! The rack turned out really nice and the detail around the olive colored squares in the ceiling look equally as nice.

Well done!

Regards,

RTROSE

Awesome. Awesome to the max. Its looking fantastic. Its funny...with the trim around the green square it makes look like the whole green part is actually dropped from the rest of the ceiling...does it look that way in real life or is it just camera tricks?

That rack is turning out nicely as well. Thats something on my to do list as well.

Too bad you had septic issues....that projector cubby is looking MIGHTY lonely......

I don't care what others might say about size ... that's still a nice wood pile!

As I start to contemplate my column construction strategy I have to ask....Do you think 1/2" plywood will be ok? Or do I need to go 3/4"? I planned to make the outer (3 sided)structure out of ply then have the inner (3 sided) secured to the wall framed out of 2x4s. Then take the outer and fabric wrap it then secure to the inner 2x4 section. Does this make sense or does anyone have any suggestions as far as column construction methods? I just want a simple square column to house my speakers.....
Unless you are walking on them....1/2" should be more than adequate IMHO.

I guess if you really go into the physics of the thing, the more dense/heavy/secure the column, the better sounding your speakers will be sitting on them....but...i doubt 1/2 vs 3/4 has any real world difference (other than price) for that application.

The main reason i was thinking half was it would be lighter and easier to work with and a bit cheaper. I wasnt even thinking about how things will sound in there only the basic design/construction of them. This is a part of the build I have become brain dead and cant design these things in my head...

Everything is coming along great! Rack looks fantastic, when are you planning to load it up with those RSH shelves...oh wait...nevermind.

Have you had a chance to listen to the 3312 at all (and no, the shelves for that one still aren't available yet, bummer)?
Stick with 1/2...im all for overbuilding stuff...but i really dont see a need for 3/4

Who needs plywood (or MDF) for columns

Column construction question

So I am starting to put together the boxes for my speaker columns and I have a question. I basically built a 3 sided box that will attach to a 2x4 contraption thats mounted to the wall once the box is wrapped in fabric. The question is since the box is plywood/2x4 construction it is now another "solid" surface for sound to bounce off of so should I wrap the outside of them in some sort of foam or carpet pad to help knock down any deflections? My initial thought was yes but I wanted some "professional" advice.
I don't see many people worry about it - maybe they figure it breaks things up (hesitate to say true diffusion)? That was one of the reasons I made my columns basically hollow - is it a good idea? Dunno. But I have options as far as more cavities to stuff for trapping (albeit not all in corners).
I have the perfect most excellent construction method for columns, but i refuse to tell you until i see pictures of carpet....lol

Brad, I thought you of ALL people would know?! I just envision fabric wrapped over plywood doesnt seem like "enough".

Matt, I think I may have forgotten about the carpet pics. I suppose I should get those uploaded huh?! What are your super column building suggestions if I may ask?

So I basically built 3 sided plywood boxes cross braced with 2x3s for strength. The problem I have is I "may" have miscalculated height for the side surrounds. For reference my second row riser is 5" higher than my front row location. What I did was take the ear height for each row and and make my side columns the average of the 2. So floor to ear in first row is 41" and in row 2 its 48" so the average is 44.5". With this I made the side columns 45" from floor to speaker . So my concern is that once the speaker is in the 45" column base it will put the actual woofer at 47" which is 6" higher than the ear of row 1. Will this be a problem?

If I were to drop it down closer to 41" then it would be 12" below the ear of the back row whereas now its only about 6" below now. Basically the sides are 6" above front row ears and 6" below rear row ears. Is this where I want to be??

Surrounds are ideally mounted 2-3' above ear level - at least based on what I read
post #622 of 1001
I would think with dipole types it wouldn't matter, maybe more so with direct radiators. Or I'm just thread bumping, you decide!

I am unsure if I am using bipole or direct surrounds as sides (I have both) but that being said along with Brad's 2-3' above ear level which I cant do. Will I be ok at 6" above the front row ears and 6" below rear row ears or do I need to rethink this?

I did a search to try to find a thread where DE commented on the subject - didn't find the thread I was looking for, but this seems pretty relevant:

Though that was 3 years ago I appreciate the link. With my situation my floor to ceiling height is 89" for first row area and 79 1/2" for row 2. If I were to place the sides at 2 feet above the ear level (41") of row one that would put them at 65". In row 2 with them 2 feet above ear level (48") that would put them at 72" which in row 2's case is only 7" from the ceiling and is actually 29" above row 1's ears. This seems HIGH to me?

I have a confession...there is no super secret awesome building technique...i was just trying to trick you into taking carpet pics....if you dont post some soon....dont be suprised if you see a stranger peeking through your basement windows....oh wait crap you dont have any....

oh well....
Hey steve...you in need of another pair of RTi 12's? This is a pretty good deal even with the cost of shipping...

oh well....

As I said just let me know when you will be in the area and you can stop bye to take a peek. Maybe bring a projector to "test" out.....lol.

In all seriousness I have pics to add but I've been slacking over these darn columns. I made the boxes but the heights I have would put the sides about 6" over the heads of the first row and 6" below the second row and I dont know if thats good/bad or otherwise......

Personally, and without the benefit of having listened to them in that position, I would want to at least get them slightly above ear level for both rows. But if you can do some type of temp setup at your current height and have a listen, that would be the best way to tell.

well the current setup puts them just above the front row but below the rear so how do I get them "just" above both rows?
