Just Another Guy Just Another Home Theater......Version 2.0 - Page 31

Dave, I dont have the room under the lip for a 1 gang box. The top is not yet secured on the riser so anything is possible. I thought I recalled seeing someone use a smaller sensor, the eye being roughly the size of a quarter or half dollar........hmmmmm.
Without looking at your floor plans or recent pictures, I'm confused. I imagine that you'll want the step illuminated before you step on it. Won't you want the motion detector to turn on the light when someone enters the aisle?

Exactly what I want.....activated when you enter/exit the aisle.

I want something that I can mount near the front base of the 2nd row riser and wire/plug into the outlet behind the riser. The only outlet in that area is behind the riser so the plug in type sensors wont work for me here.

How about a pressure sensitive switch, like a mat that would go under the carpet?

I know they use to make low-voltage versions of these for alarm/security systems, etc... they would install them under the carpet underneath entry points like windows

^^ Carpet is already in so that's a no go. Plus then you would have to step on precisely the exact spot to turn the lights on. Craig I figured you would have the perfect low volt solution for me on this.

Here is my .02 worth on this idea. Would something like this work? CLICKIE Not sure if this is something that might help or not, but might give you something to think about or maybe a different direction.

Or maybe not.

RT we may be getting somewhere however I dont have a switch to replace etc. I was hoping for something that would plug in behind the riser so that my rope light could plug into it then the sensor be run in the riser and be placed on the front side. What else ya got?
There is this. A remote switch you plug into an outlet, would that work? Clickie Am I getting closer?

That looks like a good product. My only concern would be that since those things are made to be mounted high they cover a wide and far reaching area. I would think that, unless you can mount it cleverly, you'd get a lot of false triggers and the lights would be going on quite a bit when they aren't supposed to.

How about this:

It seems like a good product and it's cheap enough to be worth a try.

RT your product is definitely on the right track. Though the concerns that "aaustin" brings up are very legit. If there were only something with a smaller eye that would not need to be mounted high like that one.

aaustin I need something that would place the sensor eye in the front of the 2nd row seating/riser but plug in behind that riser as that is the only place there is an outlet.

Steve, your idea sounds cool but I am struggling with execution for the sensor to activate the light. I am sure you can get something set up to activate by sensor or motion but how do you get it to be activated by the CORRECT movement? Meaning won't it to on if someone just decides to recline or suddenly moves their feet? I am thinking the lights would be falsely activated and then just becoming a nuisance.

Or did I miss understand what you are wanting to do?

Steve, check this out made by Velleman and sold through Smarthome.com:

That sensor/controller looks encouraging!
Looks like it is made to fit inside an electrical box?
Cool idea on the sensor for the step lights - looking forward to seeing how this works out.

Dave you "may" in fact be my new hero but only time will tell. What are your opinions on how easy it would be to connect this sensor to lights similar to what you are using in your soffits for under my riser?
Steve I'm thinking it's a switch like a normal wall switch so you should be able to turn on/off the 12v power supply through this. Not sure what space you have for mounting it would probably be best to use a 1 or 2 gang junction to stuff the little white box into as well as the wire nut connections to 120v. I would think you could easily splice and extend the round eyeball to any length you need and remote mount that in the preferred location (hook it up first with 20' of wire and move it around to find the best spot). Also if you need any romex or low voltage wire or speaker wire I have a lot left I would unload for cheap

^^ Would this be able to be used with the low voltage wiring that the LED strips you have or would this need to be wired up with regular wiring (ie. standard outlets)? I have/had hopes to be able wire it all up via low voltage wire and connect to a 12v power supply and plug that in. The reason I hope to do it this way is that I dont have any exposed electrical I can tie into. As for mounting the white box, I have yet to attach the top of my second row riser just for this sole purpose so I have plenty of room to hide this.

I'm thinking it will only work with 120v feeding it. The 12v power supply would have to be powered off this switch and then the led strips powered off the 12v PS.

Why not hire a young ( female perhaps) illegal immigrant to usher ?

Might be getting in over my head on wiring this up along with some sort of remote control module and the 12v supply. I can see how I want it but getting across that bridge is seeming difficult right now.

^^^^^Hire a professional it just might be the best money you have spent in a while. That way if something does not work right you have a course of action.

Not that you can't handle the job just might be way easier.

Yes I know I promised and thus far have FAILED to deliver. I did make a HUGE addition to the theater but had some big hiccups with that situation which may just now be resolved. Combine that with some recent health concerns/issues with my wife and I have not been able to get on here much or get anything accomplished. I will get things updated this week for the 2/3 of you that are still popping in just for kicks. And this time I promise lol.
Steve I hope all is ok with your wife! Let me know if you get to the point of hooking up that motion sensor and need any help I'll stop over and give ya a hand.
I'm sorry to hear about the health issues. That really sucks.

Hang in there and keep your head up!
