Panasonic HDC-HS250 vs PanasonicHDC-SD600?

Hi I bought the HS250 last year, and it's ok but I was wondering if I should get the SD600 as the HS250 is a hard drive camcorder and it's kind of heavy to lug around.

Does the SD600 have any new features than the HS250? Is the quality better. I was looking at the HD-TM60 at Best Buy last week and I was seriously considering it because of the 35X zoom.

I see that Amazon has the SD600 again and am considering this cam because of the price drop, do you think it's worth it or should I just keep my old HS250?

The S600 is smaller than the HS250 which may or may not be a positive, has better color reproduction and last but not least it also offers a 1080 60p mode. In my opinion, the SD600 is infinite times better.

The TM60 is in a lower class than the HS250 and SD600. The low light capabilities and colors are far worse. Speaking of the zoom, the 18x digital zoom of the SD600 looks very good. Yes you get greater zoom with the TM60 and a slightly smaller body but again, you also get worse overall picture quality.

I did get it for $300 but even for $400 it would have still been a remarkable deal.

If you buy the "600" you will still be one model behind.

like any good mechanical object, you have to really look under the hood. The SD600 is significantly better. If you use your camcorder a good bit already, but are unhappy, this will cure most of your woes.

Not perfect, of course, but fantastic.

I've also read some posts in another thread on this forum concerning whether the SD600 is really PAL instead of NTSC. Can I assume if I order this cam from Amazon that I will be getting the NTSC version with a US warranty?

I'm sorry, one model behind what? Are you saying I should wait till the newer models come out?

Well the camcorder that's replacing the SD600, the SD800 is $850 and that's a little over double the price.

I was also going to talk about that and can't believe you mention it.

Yes it's NTSC and yes it comes with a US warranty. This confusion is why I believe the SD600 went down so low in price because of these claims from people who didn't own the SD600 and it made matter worse that Panasonic USA's costumer service were also spreading the FUD at first.

I'm thinking perhaps it's because of the confusion dying down that we're seeing it in stock again.

Should I get an extended warranty for this cam? I know Panasonic only warranties their labor for 90 days which is ridiculous. Are Square Trade warranties good?

I am saying that the "600" has been replaced with the "800", and your reason to get rid of your existing camera seems irrational to me. But hey, consumerism is what drives this economy.

Well, I'm not paying top dollar for a cam that hasn't even hit the market yet, but if I can find a bargain on something that's been highly popular here and at a fantastic price, I'll buy. And I do my fair share of keeping this economy going

Well, after seeing ungs comments I took a moment to actually look at your camcorder. I was really comparing the tm60 vs sd600, and assumed yours was particularly old and outdated, without really paying attention...particularly since you were considering 60 as an option.

Unfortunately I was wrong, and I am going to have to cast my vote with ung in this situation. The size difference is not significant, yours has plenty of GB space, and 1080p60 is not a standard format, thus making it quite problematic for actual sharing (at least for me) beyond personal viewing.

If you are planning to view primarily through home media centers, such as external hard drives, then it may be worth the upgrade. But if you are burning to discs, or sharing with others, then at the moment I say hold on and technolgy will only improve, allowing you to purchase something even better when you actually need an upgrade, imho.

But the SD600 is an awesome camcorder too, and so i you want it, you will not be dissapointed.

Thanks Workinghard,

If the price were not so good I would not have even bothered. BTW, I did buy the TM60 the other day at BB and I compared it to the video from my HSC-250. The video on the 250 was better, so bye bye TM60 and hello SD600. I really fell for the 35X zoom on the TM60 but from reading the posts here and on Amazon, I'd rather have the image quality than the zoom, besides, I bought the Sony CX150 last year too so I'm still covered on the zoom. It's just that the Panny HS250 was kind of large and doesn't fit into a purse easily. So now I'll have my Sony and the SD600 and that should keep me happy until I become obsessed with some other toy down the road

Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

This is the part I cannot understand, because unless this was a gift, why did not you notice these traits when you bought it?

On the positive side, the "600" uses the same batteries as your "250", so if you have got extra you can reuse them. The new 800/900 use different batteries and there no cheap knockoffs yet.

Because at the time, I didn't think it would be a problem but after using it for awhile, it just got to be a pain to drag the camera bag along everywhere, and it was too heavy to put in my purse, so I found myself not using it as much.

That's good to know about the batteries, those things are expensive. And I've been kind of wary about using batteries that were not Panasonic because I didn't want to risk damaging the camcorder.

Lucky enough to be able to pick up some available overtime for home and hobbies.
