Project location: St. Louis
Project budget: $62,500

Our client sought to enjoy a similar experience from a local boutique-style movie theater inside his home on somewhat of a limited budget and with keen aesthetic concerns. He wanted to be immersed in the movie, which required a performance level, both sonically and visually, that pleased the musicians ears with as much detail that would be placed in the mural itself. With one of his favorite colors being blue lapis, this became the foundation of the color palette. An asymmetric curved ceiling, unparallel walls, floating screen, and the mural are all unique elements of the room that provides an undulating, floating feeling as if being in the ocean.

Yeah, totally relative! I guess I spent somewhere in the $20K range for the construction alone, plus $5000 or so for my custom bar, and another $5000-$10000 on equipment, most of which I already had. So in reality my DIY cost was less than $30K for sure, but it probably would have cost in excess of $60K if I had a professional HT builder design and build it. Thank God for the AVS Construction threads, it's where I learned everything about HT construction. I would have never had been able to come up with the "small" budget of $60K, haha!

EDIT: I should add that as they say, to everyone's own, but I don't see how having your walls painted like an undersea would NOT distract you from the movie experience, yikes!

I would think that those walls would be really distracting while trying to watch a movie. Way too busy.

Different strokes for different folks .. not my cup 'o tea and seems to fly in the face of the KISS method of HT design ..

Just wish I had had $62K + to drop on mine ..

I'm surprised to see that they made a concave ceiling on purpose, as these generally tend to focus the sound... I've seen other designs where a "wave" pattern is used with predominately convex areas to scatter/diffuse the sound, which makes a lot more sense to me.

I hope with that ceiling design that they actually measured the in room frequency response...

Holy crap that's ugly. Instead of spending all that money on excessive amounts of amplification that will never even get half used, and on useless power conditioners, the guy could have hired a good decorator.

I like it. It's unique. How much was spent on the mural?

The seats don't match, swap em out for something more wild/undersea.

$60k is probably in the ball park I will look to spend on my HT, but it will be an integrated home theatre in to a bar/wine storage/play area across a 2500 sq foot area. I need to figure out how to get more bang for my buck, without doing my own construction...

way too distracting for a home theater.

Point of a great home theater is to get into the movie as much as possible, get rid of LED lights in the front, paint the front with flat black paint etc.

designing an HT with curved ceiling, be it symmetrical or otherwise is just plain foolish from acoustics standpoint.
