Tack, keep in mind though, not all the boxes are "perfect". Most have scuffs and light scratches.

Guys, I forgot that I had to house sit tonight and tomorrow night for a friend. No packaging for 2 nights. But tomorrow and Sunday during the day, I'll get a lot of surrounds boxed up.

I saw it and it helps.

I have read they sound good, and read that they get loud.

My main concern is will they "behave" at high spl? Or are they bight and or harsh at high spl.
Well if some one does do a build I will most likely copy that build also. Not sure how big I really want the surrounds but I am only buying the guts so I could make it however big.

In case you didn't get my PM Erich I was wanting to know if you could hold a pair of gutted surrounds for me. I didn't know all the prices exactly for the shipping but I do know that I want a pair.

I tested mine in my family room in place of my NHT Absolute Zeros (which measure extremely well, BTW). The 8330's have a little less mid-bass (weird) but sound very good, on and off axis. They can take the power too.
I certainly wouldn't say they are bright or harsh.

How loud did you play them?

I agree, they can handle some good power and still sound decent.

I thought they were a little bright but I didn't have the grill on the front so I'm sure that was the main reason. It could have been the settings I had for my previous speakers too. Or maybe I had the switch on the back set to the wrong setting. I didn't listen to them for that long.

I did get your PM. I'm still checking to see how to ship to your country. My guess is that it will be too expensive for what you're getting.

They way they are angled is perfect for my shop and I would imagine perfect for the typical "surround" installation too.

"Don't get cheap on me Dodson"

I did just the guts because I have some weird angles and space constraints for the two on the side. I def could have used the stock cabs for the rears, but had the itch to build. I won't be doing a build log as my skill level is rated a solid "meh" But I will post the final products and any finding I run across. And for the record, I just flicked off the corners of my room.

Erich, any of the surrounds still available?

I was listening to music. 95-100 at the LP.

That makes sense. The Absolute Zeros are tuned with a high-Q bass alignment, like pretty much every other good-sounding mini-monitor (including the old NHT SuperZero, and the BBC LS3/5a). That makes them sound fuller at low-mid volume, and hides their lack of bass.

Ok, I have decided to go ahead and make a thread where everyone can post their build pics and exchange information. I have an ulterior motive in this adventure. I failed geometry in HS and have never been motivated to revisit it as a discipline. Made it through college with a degree in economic/business and avoided it like the plague. It is time for me to get with the program and learn from this. I will post my ignorance so that other can learn from it and yet others can dust off their calculators.
HAHA! You don't need to know geometry. As long as you can read a measuring tape it's all good.
Wrager and Erich, thanks for the baffle and spacing info. My PM was screwed up for some reason. Re-entered my email addy and all is well. Weird. I'll chime in on the build thread, too. I'm still going with my 14Hx19Wx12D, sloping to 9.5D at the bottom to keep the proper 15 degree angle. I'm building my own cabs because I want them dark walnut stained oak veneer like the rest of the stuff I'm building.

The shipping calculator I used for Shipito.com said FedExpress was $134 for a 18x18x12 30lbs box.

I think the surrounds were 45 each so
90+134=224

SO $225 isn't to bad. Its still more than everyone else is having to pay but the alternative was going to be a pair of 226 6.5" drivers and a JBL or Selenium CD.

$110 x 2 +10%tax. So 242 without even getting CDs yet. I have the 6" JBL WGs and even with the cheap 220Ti they are still going to be around 375 for the pair of my clone surrounds. AND I would still need to make a crossover.

SO for now I was thinking that I could use your surrounds for my HT and use my clones in the future for out doors on the patio.

Figured I asked in this thread too. Did anyone determine the volume of the small mid enclosure? I'd like to start cutting today.
I saw Erich post a preliminary measurement of about 1.5L a few days ago, but don't know if that's the final word, or not.

Last time I measured the mid chamber, I just poured some small foam pellets into the chamber flush with the front baffle. I got 5.75 cups which was about 1.4 liters or so.

Today I completely removed the chamber, brought it inside and filled it up with small plastic lexan pellets to get a better reading.

It's exactly 5 cups. Which is 1.18 liters. So that's what you need to build it as. Maybe 1.25 L would be okay?

Where's the extra .75 cups (approx) from the earlier measurement? The diameter of the midrange cutout and the 3/4" thick baffle took extra pellets to fill.

Long story short, the midrange chamber should be 5 cups, once it's installed on the baffle, it will hold close to 5.75 cups.

Yes, I just measured something in audio with 'cups'!

I think everyone got the small piece of fiberglass that they had stuffed in the midrange chamber.

The other large piece I included in the box was just to show you what they had lining the walls of the main enclosure. There won't be enough for both boxes but you can use other types of fiberglass.

I'm going back out to box up more guts!

By the way, good news, Mr. Coctostan and his friend arrived today to pick up all their JBL stuff. My living room now looks a little better. I offered my ugly flower couch for free, but they both said "NO!" I thought I heard them laugh about the couch and was going to kill the whole deal right there. But they both seemed like nice guys, so I let it slide.

I almost got him to buy some of the massive 31" horns, but I think he was a bit scared of those! I'm confident he could have stuffed at least 6 inside the trailer he brought.

He was also offered some dusty surrounds and empty subwoofer enclosures. Coctostan couldn't resist the dual 15" enclosures, and saved some from being crushed later on. In total, he kept 11 enclosures from meeting the landfill.

Oh, this past week a cabinet company went out of business and I was offered some brand new boxes for flat packing items in. Not sure if the sizes will work or not for future group buys, but I brought a LOT to my shop just in case. I was expecting Coctostan to make fun of the 17 pallets of new cardboard boxes randomly placed around the shop, but not one mention of it! Now that takes restraint. They probably started questioning it AFTER they left though.
Erich how much room do you have man?
Nice to see coctosan take 11 cabs.
Hmm...what's he going to do with em all is what I'm wondering.

P.S. Can you check and see how much shipping your couch to me would cost. LOL

Erich, what are you gonna do with all the free time once everything is sold?

I'll be hunting for the next project!

Kingpin, I got kinda lucky finding my shop. It's not very pretty at all right now, but I'll eventually get it looking better. I've been working on my house for the past couple years to get that done first.

One side of the shop is about 90' x 40' and the other room off to the side is 35' x 65' I believe. I can fit a LOT of pallets in there! I'm going to fix up the smaller area for something else eventually.
Erich, do you still have plenty of the 8330's? I maybe wanting four with cabinets. I will be in Louisville and may drive over and pick up. Let me know. I would also be interested in two of the dual 15" cabinets and four MFW-15 drivers.

Thanks,

It was good to meet you Erich. Thanks for all the effort and time you've put into this. I hope that pallet gets to you soon and with minimal headache.

I only seem like a nice guy. Don't let it fool you. If I didn't have a wife at home, I'd consider the flower couch. Put some vintage AR cabs stuffed with top notch drivers next to it along with an old school Marantz receiver and it could be very cool. My wife is cool with the ugly speakers which I reassured her this morning would all go behind the screen wall.

Hey, by me picking up those cabs saved a few trees, maybe a thumb or two and tons of time in building the enclosures for my 8 MFW-15s.

I didn't poke fun at your shop because my garage is a scale version of your shop. I kid you not.

I just received my pair of 8330's.

First, I'd like to add that Erich is a great person to work with.

The speakers were packaged in a very secure manner, it would take a serious drop to damage the speaker with this packaging. The Speakers overall are in good condition. The grills could use some new fabric but overall are not bad and can be used without any questions. This is a FANTASTIC deal on these speakers and I can't thank Erich enough for everything he is doing for the AVS community.

Here are some pictures of the speakers being unpacked... (Don't mind my 18 month old for a size comparison as he is the only thing I had nearby. )

Good news that they're arriving in one piece. I'm glad those beefed up corner protectors I found are keeping things looking good.

Got my 4 surrounds yesterday. Unpacked, set up as mains, and they sound great. Packing was very good. Sorry, no pics. Mine looked the same as the above, minus the little one. My only suggestion if you get some of these: unpack them from the bottom and you will not get peanuts all over as you take them out of the box. I figured this after opening the first one and spending 10 minutes picking up peanuts. They are a great deal. Much bigger than you think. And fairly heavy. Built like tanks. A little dusty, and one had a corner with the paint missing (fixed with a sharpie). All in all, very happy with this. Erich is a great asset to this forum.
