OT: Show Us Your Ride or photos of your other interests!!

All SSPs at this level are all excellent these days, projector technology is at a stand still in terms of ultimate 2-D performance (forget 3D), and so there is very little new technology ON TOPIC to discuss as of late.

I know many of us here have other interests that perhaps we'd like to share with each other. I posted pix of my new car and, since we're all buddies here, I didn't feel it showy or being a poser or the likes... just sharing a very exciting time with my friends here at AVS just like I did with my buddies at home.

Ferrari is another car that I am completely enamored by and I know there are a few Ferrari owners here. Lambos or vintage cars as well! I know there are watch collectors here, too!

There are no criteria for price, extravagance or how low cost it is... Just tell us about your other hobbies or interests!

So, don't be shy, post some photos of your other interests or hobbies and give a description for us... I can see there is interest as I've seen other cars / trucks posted, cameras, etc. This could be a fun thread!

I'll post pix of my new car later today to start things off, but lets have fun with this and get to know each other on a different level. Should be a fun... we're not all 1 dimensional HT folks!

OK... I'll start.

Here's my 2011 Porsche Turbo S. custom Azure Blue Exterior (matte paint). Road and Track just clocked a stock Turbo S at 2.6 seconds 0-60 (tied the Bugatti Veyron's time)... and around 10.7 sec 1/4 mile @ 129 MPH...

So, like electronics to a certain degree, there is subjective performance and hard numbers like the above.

I promised my wife I would take the Porsche driving school class before I fully tested out the explosive acceleration of this car!

Nice ride. I've been a long time Porsche fan and it looks like you went straight to the top of the 911 heap. Have you owned others? Is this an AWD car? Also, I'm a little short on the new fangled automatic/tiptronic/PDK technology, where's the clutch? Are the flappy paddles totally manual or does the car shift for you if you go too deep into the red? What happens if you downshift into second when you're redlining third? Will it let you blow it up?

Porsche is gone. My other 4 rides.

Hi,

I've had two before - a '99 Carrera and '06 Carrera 4S. This one is special for 2 reasons.

1. It's my first new Porsche (the others were used)
2. It's fast

It's AWD -all Turbos are. The PDK is a dual clutch - no 3rd pedal. It is ultra fast in changing gears as the next gear is already moving with the current gear so switching is lightning fast. Yes, it has safety mechanisms and you can't blow it up running too high.

It has a 'Launch Control' feature that you engage by putting the car into Sport Plus mode, holding the brake to the floor, then holding the gas pedal to the floor. Once it reaches 5000 RPMs, you simply let go of the brake and it will shift through all gears for you at top RPMs giving the max acceleration... al the way to 196 MPH if you have the road.

You can put the car into 'Automatic and do nothing, or you can manual shift using the shifter or paddles. There are two Sport Modes which increase the revs for faster shifting and higher RPMs.

It has some other nice features like Dynamic Engine mounts, Torque Vectoring for corner at certain speeds, etc... Very cool.

Thanks!

That is some pretty serious technology! Did R&T compare their own manual shift times against the Sport Plus cheater mode?

I used the power of Google to drag up a very brief explanation video of PDK. Clever, but it seems like weight would become a problem. Though, if you're running 10's in the quarter, you're probably not too concerned about weight.

Thanks for the info.

On your third and you haven't learned, "There are no used Porsche's, only new owners."

I had a 2001 Vette that I got to 147 mph and backed off...

Is it legal to post pics of guns?

Well if there's one thing we can agree on, we like fast cars, especially those with horsies on them, even if some of us like badly-designed card-cage remote controls or music-nuking opamps.

Was that a Blower Bentley in the van? If yes, so sweet....

Nice ride...keep it off of I-94 and the truck traffic! Porsche is STILL a two syllable word.

Enjoy!

BTW: Early Turbo models were two-wheel drive.

I have other cars but... I love my German Wife (Turbo) and Italian Mistress (Italia).

Ash, what airlines did you take? I usually take Emirates when I travel to that region, but the last two times I took Etihad Airlines and it was very nice.

In PDK (and other double-clutch transmissions like BMW's DCT), there are two clutches which are controlled by the computer instead of the third pedal in a conventional manual transmission, so the transmission is more similar to a regular manual than to a slushbox automatic.

Though the double-clutch trannies are pretty different than a regular manual because there are essentially two half-gearboxes in there: the odd and even gears. When one gear is used, the next gear up is pre-engaged for a seamless shift: one clutch just had to disengage as the other engages. You can basically upshift while keeping your foot on the floor and not feel anything.

The computer will not let you blow up the transmission with a money shift (eg. downshift to 2nd when redlined in 3rd). Most, if not all, will let you bang against the rev-limiter --- they won't shift for you when you hit redline in manual mode.

These are really awesome transmissions. I believe Audi was the first to have this in a production car, and then followed by Nissan, Bugatti, and now Porsche (I am sure there are other I have missed).

Not be confused with a 2-disc or multi-disc clutch, which is simply increasing the surface area of a clutch by way of multiple discs and friction plates, typically used on a "normal" manual transmission.

As this thread is also about "other interests", I thought it would be a great place to share the news that I have recently become a Mohel ( Moyle to most people).

My first Bris was a big deal for me, and it was really important that I gave the parents, and family, the reassurance that I was both capable and understanding. I felt that a great part of that was to project a professional, and sensitive, appearance.

This is me arriving at my first "gig"......

His: 1988 Lamborghini Jalpa... baby brother to the Countach. They share any of the same parts. The engine is a Countach 5.2L minus 4 cylinders. This is number 411 of 420 produced. I bought it in 2003 with 1,300 miles on it. I have 13,000 on it now! Since this is my baby I had to go high end with the stereo. See the next post for pics.

A dentist. No. Just a NYC Garmento.

All those toys don't add up to the price of Jeff's car.

I will say thought that NONE of the cars in this thread gives you the rush of my Ducati. 0-60 in 2.7 seconds on 358 lbs.
