Official LG BD690/670/650/6xx Series Thread - Page 48

Do you rent or do you own? If a homeowner, wired networking is far _far_ preferable to wireless.

Beyond that it is hard to offer advice. Many people use wireless without any problems at all. However a large percentage of people do experience problems. It is impossible to predict which category you will fall into.

My BD670 works great with the dlna server built into my ReadyNAS NV+. Browsing directories with a couple hundred files is perfectly responsive. At some point it may be necessary to divide the movies into separate folders, but so far it hasn't been a problem. A NAS with a built in media server is the preferable strategy if you can afford it. When it comes time to replace the BD670 with a new player, it won't require any file movement or configuration.

THanks, guys, here is a follow-up question since I am fairly new to this:

So, a NAS will have a DLNA server built in, which is preferable to simple folder access? My Netgear has a USB port in the back which is designated for Readyshare USB drive sharing. I suspect that a NAS will be a better solution, but do you guys think I would be able to plug the NAS into that USB plug?

I could hardwire things, but it would involve running wires through the attic crawlspace in down walls, etc. So, if the wireless doesn't perform well enough often enough, I will just stick with the sneakernet approach.

I was pretty excited, though, when my ripped bluray of Gladiator (a 6GB file) streamed over the network! But then again, it sometimes has a hard time holding onto an HD stream on Netflix or the HDX on Vudu, so we will see.

BTW, when ripping blurays, has anyone determined which format works best with the 670/690?

So get this... found the problem and found a workaround. I moved the BD670 to my home to see if it was the player or the network. It worked like a charm at my house... which confused the issue. I did some sniffer caps at my parents' house and everything looked normal... 3 hours later I realize there is a major bug in the BD670 code.

So my home is configured as 192.168.1.0/24 and I have a number of family members connected to my home network via VPN.... so I create /26s for each of them. My parents had 192.168.14.64/26... which results in a broadcast address of 192.168.14.127. The BD670 got an address of 192.168.14.91 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.192, which are correct. Broadcasts from the server, IP of 192.168.14.68 were sent to 192.168.14.127 and my PC saw it correctly... verified via sniffer. Yet the share never appeared on the BD670.

So my last step was to readdress to 192.168.15.0/24, resulting in a broadcast address of 192.168.15.255. Rebooted the BD670 and readdressed the server, and with no additional changes, the shares appear.

So it looks like the BD670 fails to listen to broadcasts on the proper broadcast address. Now the question is... how does one submit a bug with LG?

My NAS. Iomega ix2-200, is DLNA but it doesn't affect how I access the video files. The DLNA feature jet allows the NAS to do the video transcoding instead of the player. Most of my files are .mkv and I don't have a problem playing, FF, or RW.

My NAS is connected to my network via direct Ethernet connection to my router. This way all my computers, ps3, and bd players can access the files. It can't connect via USB. I also use the NAS as a system backup server.

The apps do vary by region. Please note that though the US player has Netflix, it does not offer A Web browser or Facebook app. I'm not aware of those options being offered on LG Blu-ray players in any regions.

LG has not even made announcements about their new players yet. They are likely to introduce them at CES next week, but if they do, it may take some time for them to hit store shelves (and they won't likely announce a release date). The 2011 models started hitting small retail stores in late February and didn't show up in the major retailers for several weeks after that. Be advised that the initial prices may be much higher than current models. When the BD670 first came out, all retailers we're charging full retail ($250), but during the holiday season the same players went for less than half of that. Add on top of that the buggy firmware that shipped on the player and you'll find that there is a cost to being an early adopter!

It's always nice to have the most current model, but be prepared to be very patient and pay a lot more if you want to have a 2012 model as soon as they hit stores. I would wait until next week to see what features will be offered next year, then decide if it's worth waiting or if you just want to find a good deal on a current model.

Also, be forewarned that last year there was a period prior to the release of the 2011 models were the inventory of the prior models was scarce and the retailers were not offering particularly good deals on those models.

Wait a week, CES & see what 2012 models offers. If you can snag A deal today go for it. It's a crap shoot w/the players.

I picked up a 670 at Bestbuy as an open box tonight for 99 bucks. The 670 can browse and play files stored on my Windows 7 PC just fine. I'm streaming a 1080P video from my PC right now, the picture and DTS audio are perfect. However, my PC can't see the 670 on my home network. I have connected an external hard drive to the 670 via the USB port. I was hoping to be able to open files stored on the external hard drive from my PC. I thought there might be a setting I overlooked to turn on nework discovery to make the DVD player or more importantly the external hard drive that is connected to it visible on the network. I'd appreciate any sort of help.

load the nero MediaHome 4 Essentials disc that came with your BD670 onto your computer and Update the software online
post #1424 of 2199
I don't want nero on my system. I had the newest version of nero some time back, and it didn't play nice with win 7 64 bit edition. Then, when I uninstalled nero, it screwed up my auto play options. A system restore didn't fix auto play. I had to do a fresh install of the OS. Is there no other way? If I have to, I can live without being able to browse my DVD player from my PC. I can just connect the external hard drive to the router, but I'd rather connect it to the DVD player and forget about it. I'd like to be able to drop files onto the external hard drive connected to the 670 at my leisure using my PC. I have a WDLIVE Streaming Media Player in my bedroom with an external hard drive connected. I drop files onto the hard drive using my PC all the time. Like I said, the DVD player can browse the computer and open files with no issues, but the computer can't see, let alone browse, the DVD player over the network. How does having nero on the PC enable the PC to detect the LG DVD player across the network. That doesn't make sense to me.

Also, is there a way to disconnect a storage device from the USB without powering down the unit, an eject USB command?

My android phone doesn't see the 670 either using ES file explorer. ES sees my laptop, both of my WDTV media players, my desktop, my router, etc.. everthing that is connected to the network except this DVD player. It may be a limitation of the player. It may not be discoverable over the network. It may not have a samba server or whatever. That's no big deal. I like this DVD player anyway. For 99$, it was a good deal. I recently wired my network with CAT 6, so I'm not relying on WIFI. This thing has played the first two 1080P videos over the network from my laptop exquisitely. My little WDLIVE's are glitchy and prone to freeze ups when streaming 1080P, especially over wifi, but they're pretty good over a wired network.

It acts as as CIFS client, but not a CIFS server. Your best bet is to get a small NAS with USB support, or to simply share the USB drive as a windows (CIFS) share on your home computer. No need to run Nero or any DLNA/uPNP server.

I hooked up the external hard drive to my router. It's all good. I just didn't know for sure until you confirmed it lacked the ability.

How is the performance hooking it up via your router? I have a Netgear WNDR4500 that I have hooked up small flash drives to and it worked fine. But I never hooked up a large external HDD to it. I have a 1 tb external HDD connected to my computer via Esata, and I just share files via CIFS to my BD670, and it works great.
I used to have a Netgear N600 (WNDR 3700), and the USB port was as slow as Xmas for use with an external hard drive. I exchanged the N600 for a Netgear N900 (WNDR 4500), and the only improvement I've noticed after upgrading to a more expensive router is the USB port is A LOT faster on the N900. I am able to stream 1080P from the router over my wired network without issues. I have not tried wifi.

I'm about to add a gigabit switch just for my home theater. I elected to go with the tiny Netgear five port (GS105) since the internet source coming into the switch will be a wire coming from one of the four gigabit outputs on my Netgear router. Hopefully the little switch won't decrease my bandwidth much. I only paid $21 for the switch (as opposed to $50 from Newegg) because I bought a refurb on ebay. Hopefully it will be okay. If not, I will be ordering a Trendnet switch. Several posters here at AVS highly recommend cheap, little Trendnet switches. I just thought two Netgear products might play nice together.

I just hooked up my 670 last night.

Is it normal for these units to make a distinctly noticeable whine/hum sound when the power is on? I'm not talking about booting up a disc, I'm talking about with no disc in the machine, it's makes this sound and it is difficult not to hear it.

Thanks!

I think so.

I've been hearing this too since I moved my 670 to the bedroom... (it was probably doing it in the living room, too, I just didn't hear it because the room is noisier and the 670 was in a TV stand further away)

I should try and see if the 660 I just got for the living room makes the same noise (yes, I was so impressed with the 670 as a networked media player that I bought a 660 too!!!!).
I think Im going to grab a 690 today, connect it to my HSI via ethernet cable so I can download Vudu HDX movies to the HDD for full quality.

I'll start reading backwards in the thread today.
The picture quality is awesome, but I've never had a Blu-Ray or DVD player that hummed/whined just when the power was on. I think I'm going to return it.

Yes, it does, I just tested. It's not loud enough that I'd hear it from the couch, but if I put my head next to it, I hear the same types of sounds coming from the 660 as from the 670.

What are you going to replace it with? In my case, I wanted something that would do CIFS/SMB networking (DLNA servers are hugely moody, slow, etc); that left two options, Panasonic and these LGs. The Panasonic (which was on sale for less) LOOKED better physically, but the CIFS client is completely broken, it can't play a bunch of format formats (e.g. MKV), can't even play PAL DVDs. The 670 was a breath of fresh air after that utterly disappointing POS...

If you're just looking to play discs or Netflix, then you've got a lot more options, true...
I bought a 650 a few weeks ago to replace a 300 series that died (player portion stopped spinning). I was disappointed that the new one would not do 1080 over the component interface whereas the 300 series would.

This is a result of 'analog sunset' policies. 2011 and newer players are required to do this when playing protected content.

Thanks very much for your feedback. Yep, I'm just looking to play blu ray discs and stream Netflix. All I need is a quiet player. I'm thinking about the Panasonic DMP-BDT210.

That's the one I returned...

Does LG support have anything to say about the noise?
