on the MLB.TV website it says the LG BD640 works but there is no MLB.TV icon in the LG Netcast screen. Does anyone know why? Also I am trying to program my universal remote to with with the LG player but I cannot find the 4 digit code for this player anywhere.. Does anyone know it?

I have noticed this. I believe it's a bug. While streaming music, if you use the BACK button to back out of the currently playing album, the system freezes and will eventually shut down. If you instead use the UP ARROW to navigate out of a currently playing album, the system does not freeze. I can repeat this bug and workaround over and over. It's a firmware issue. Nothing wrong worth your player.

Thanks for the tip. Couldn't quite figure why some time it would freeze and other times it wouldn't. I don't know if I was hitting the up arrow versus back button, but next time I will pay attention.

Hi. I have a couple of questions for BD6xx owners. I've seen two posts mentioning problems with MKV support, particularly 1080p playback.. Was this a one-off, or do these players really not support any kind of 1080p MKV playback, regardless of the settings you use in x264? From what I've read, it seems that the previous models (BD5xx) supported MKV 1080p playback, so it seems awfully weird that the newer models would drop this support.

As a fallback measure, I assume these players will have no problem playing 1080p videos recorded in DVD+Rs in AVCHD format?

These players do support 1080p MKV playback. Make sure the MKV is Profile 4.1.

Has anyone heard if LG intends a firmware update to support subtitles for Netflix streaming? Netflix doesn't show any blu ray players as devices that currently support subtitles (right now it's just PC/Mac, game consoles and Boxee I think) however the Netflix blog recently said that all devices released this summer or later this year will support subtitles. So it certainly seems like something that should be available via a firmware update.

I sent the question to LG product support and will post the answer when I receive it. Just thought I'd try here too in case anyone here has looked into it also. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Well that's easy enough, since I haven't yet started backing up my BD collection, and I intend to encode them at 4.1 level anyway.

I was considering the purchase of a BD630, since I have no need for DLNA support (got a WDTV live already) or internet aps, just a solid Blu-ray player. I was concerned by Vampidemic's and djmaltby's posts, since they mentioned that both a 1080p .m2ts file and a 1080p MKV file gave a "Video resolution not supported" error.

I checked that MKV video ("Sita Sings the Blues"), and it appears to be a variable fps encode, so that alone could account for the unsupported resolution error.

I just tried both "folder.jpg" and "artwork.jpg" with no success. Maybe there's a magic size/dimension that will work, but I couldn't get any artwork to display for folders, .mp4 or .mkv video files.

I did notice that when in the largest icon view displaying files on the 690s internal HDD, if you stop on one film/video for about 4 seconds, it plays frames from the file (guessing 1/15 sec) so you can see what's in it. It's slow, not very useful, and only displays the file it's on. When you navigate to another file, the icon goes back to the static film reel. It didn't display frames on files from my share, only on the internal HDD.

I have "Sita Sings the Blues" in .mp4, not .mkv, but I suspect you're right about the variable encode being the issue. I have since found a few 1080p MKV files that played well (music videos), and they're all .mkv with MPEG4/AVC High@L4.0 or 4.1. One file is L4.2, and I get a warning that says "this movie may not be playable properly", but it plays fine.

Alright, I've done enough reading to start my eyes bleeding and get myself a little more uninformed.I just need a little understanding about video upscaling. Here goes:

If I have a LG BDP that has great vid upscaling and a mid-line Denon AVR that does vid upscaling, what/which is the correct setup. What I mean is, if I have a DVD getting upscaled (video) by the BDP, which is connected via HDMI to my AVR then to the TV via HDMI, is the AVR taking the processed (upscaled) video signal from the LG BDP and then trying to process (upscale) it again?

No, its already at 1080P coming from the BDP, so the Denon should not be doing anything. Now if you set the BDP to output at 480, the Denon would then do its thing, It would be nice to compare the upscaling quality between the two. 480 to 1080 using the Denon vs. just using the BDP or 720 to 1080 using the BDP and Denon (setting the BDP to output 720), curious which one looks better?

That's too bad. I don't get why no player seems to get this thing right. Why invest in a UI with big placeholder art when you don't got the whole yard?

Anyway, have you tried embedding the artwork right into the .mp4 file itself? Or place an additional file into the same folder (something like "moviename.jpg" or "moviename.mp4.jpg"?) where the movie files are?

Hi - lg bd670 here,

everything about it is great although i cant compare to anything since its my first Blu-ray player.

There is one annoyance, the Netflix app keeps asking me to re-activate it online (it gives you a code then your supposed to activate the device using a computer) I understand i do that once, but then, the next day i go to load netflix and its bugging me to do it again ......

anyone else run into this?

I have the newest updates.

How many computers\\devices do you and your family use for netflix? It has a 6 device limit and will knock out other devices when devices connect and you are near the 6 device limit. Computers seems to have a higher priority than other devices for some reason. You can check you device count through your account settings.

I have the LG670 and do not have any problems with Netflix. I am on firmware v8.62.245.E.

Curious to know how many Apps you can see in the LG TV Apps store. I only see 5 when I access the app store on the 670, yet around 17 are visible on the web.

Re: my earlier post about whether there will be a firmware update to allow subtitles for Netflix, below is the response I got from LG Product Support. Note that they don't definitively say that the 650 and other 600 series players will eventually support subtitles (which was the question I asked, not when). But would others hear read that as the implied answer ("Yes subtitles will be incorporated in a future update, we just can't tell you when") or a complete non-answer ("We don't know what's in any future update until we get a communication from the factory and we haven't received anything about this yet")? I have a 590 and was looking at the 690. I had hoped to use the 590 as a media hub, but was disappointed with some of its limitations. For example, it only supports mkv files that are H264 and either DTS or AC3 sound, not VC-1, tru-HD, or DTS-MA. For music, it does not support FLAC or Apple's M4A files, only MP3 or WAV. It does not play properly albums that are meant to be heard without a pause between tracks (opera, for example), as it always pauses. The 590 does not read tags from music files, only from Gracenote, which means I'd have to re-rip all my albums (not happening!); I gather the 690 does, but how well? Have they fixed any/all of these?

Thanks so much for the detailed info on what you are seeing in the App Store, it agrees exactly with what I am seeing. When the App store first opened (3/2/11) all of the apps visible in the store on the web were also visible/available when you visited the store using your BD670. Right after I upgraded to 8.62.245.E, all of the Apps in the App store were gone. I initially thought the upgrade had affected what I was seeing in the App store, but apparently LG is juggling what apps are visible themselves. Over the last few weeks, the number of apps visible has gone up to the 6 you listed. So the upgrade to firmware 8.62.245.E wasn't the reason for all of the apps disappearing.

One thing 8.62.245.E did was reduce the output of the component connection on the BD670 to 480P max. I had mine hooked up via component cable (red, green, blue) and after the upgrade (or should I say downgrade), the output dropped from 720P to 480P (pic quality was awful) and I developed a problem with the sound being out of synch with the picture on BluRay discs (nice job LG). Apparently this downgrade of analog outputs on BD players was required by the motion picture industry effective 1/1/2011. I had to buy an HDMI switch to get around the issue since my TV only has one HDMI input and it was being used by my cable dvr.

LG needs to get their App store rolling. They are way behind their competitors re: availability of useful/desireable apps. I think their hardware is the best out there, but most people will make buying decisions based on what content is available on the player. To not have a facebook and Twitter app available in the app store at roll-out is a large blunder on LG's part.

I'm still waiting for an answer from LG (1.5 weeks and counting) on what happened to all of the apps in the app store and why there are many visible on the web and only 6 visible when you visit the store through the BD670.

Mine pulled an update last night and failed then rebooted. The new update that failed to install had a new driver version90358 and sw version 9.0.??

This morning I checked and only the new driver was listed as the update (90358) it successfully updated that. I checked for a swupdate after getting the new driver and nothing came up.

So that must be what they meant when they wrote:

You actually saw a new firmware version with a numbering sequence that started with 9.0.xxx !! What model BluRay player do you have and what is your current firmware version?

I updated last night but only saw the new driver you mentioned and it successfully installed.

Yes, I did, didn't note the whole sequence but definitely began with 9.0....
