Bose Acoustimass with Sony Receiver

Thread Starter
Hey all. I am new to this forum, and have a question about using a Bose Acoustimass sub with a sony DG-520 5.1 receiver. I have a 5.1 setup, and am running all my speakers through the bose acoustimass subwoofer. For those of you that aren't exactly familiar, there is a serial cable that runs from my subwoofer, and plugs into the speaker inputs on my receiver, then there are rca speaker cables that run from the subwoofer to each of my five speakers (six including subwoofer). essentially it seems the subwoofer is acting as a crossover or something. I would like to bypass the subwoofer 5 speakers, and just wire them directly to my receiver, and only use the sub as a sub... Two questions, would this improve my sound quality at all, and would the sub be out of sync with the rest of the speakers? Thanks! I appreciate your help1

This will probably turn into a bose bashing thread. There is a reason for that.
I would sell the bose, and start working on a different 5.1 setup, with a real subwoofer and all.
To be more specific, you have to run your bose setup the way bose intended and let the bass module sort it out.

I would recommend you continue connecting the speakers as you have been in the past. The accoustimass module handles alot of the midrage frequencies more so than a conventional sub of a 5.1 system. The speakers on there own would be lacking in the mid range.

As for the people who will claim you should sell the speakers I would recommend ignoring them. The accoustimass speakers sound decent for their size and many people own and enjoy the 6, 10 and 15 accoustimass models. You may want to consider a different amplifier for the speakers at some point.

What model acoustimass system do you have? Is the 'sub' powered or only passive, and are they single or double cubes?

Leave the bass module connected inline of your cube speakers. The bass module acts as a crossover for the cubes and as mentioned above extends well into the midrange. The cube satellites themselves are only designed for ~210hz+, plus wiring them directly to the receiver will eventually kill them.

To complete your new true 5.1 system, a powered subwoofer should be supplemented to take care of the ".1" LFE channel. You will also notice considerably better low frequency performance, as most powered subwoofers (even inexpensive ones) often can dip to much lower frequencies than the Bose AM Bass modules.
