I won't be getting Skyrim until the price comes down.

I'm thinking of checking out what some mods can do for improving how Oblivion looks. It seems people are still modding the game after all these years.

That's what I'm doing. One of the major modders on the scene is working on all new visual enhancements so I'll wait for that. The game will be well-patched by then and a bit cheaper also.

I used this strategy on Dragon Age Origins and really enjoyed the high-res textures, better quality character models, and other game-play enhancements from mods during my first play through as a result. In fact, when I got a non-modded expansion after finishing the game, I was a bit disappointed in how bland the visuals were.

What was your take on Fallout 3? Fallout 3 was the game that really hooked me.



I think this is one of those things where certain games just aren't certain people's "Cup o' Tea", if you know what I mean. Take Final Fantasy, and all the other JRPG's. I just can't get into those games. I've tried playing them, but they just don't do it for me. Some people are just going to get turned off by the kind of game that Bethesda Studios puts out. Other people are going to savor every minute.

I'm in the "savor every minute" camp.

I tried to play F3 and within 5 hours or so I was totally bored with it. I do prefer the F3 story-line/environment to that of Skyrim. I have to admit that I am not one to play the same game for 20+ hours within a reasonable time frame so these games are definitely not my 'cup o tea'. The gamer in me wants to like it but I just can't get past the clunky game play, it just feels and looks so dated (meaning character animations). Anyway no big deal, I tried it and don't get it, lucky for me Batman AC is coming on the 22nd (cannot see myself putting more than 20 hours into that one either).

I honestly don't think I even tried it, at least that I recall (maybe a demo but not sure). It honestly did not interest me from what I remember seeing of it, guess I am not into dragons.

Out of 112 hours, I think I only fought 2.5 dragons. The .5 is for the one who kept beating me so bad that I eventually just avoided that fight.

With many tweaks and running on Ultra settings...graphically, it's hard for me to say if this is the best game I've ever played graphically. It certainly would be top 3. I don't know if it's the technical graphics or just the gorgeous world that the art team made. I will say that this is the most beautiful game I have ever played. No detail goes unlooked. The detail on the doors, the salmon in the river, the flowers, etc etc.

The UI is pretty terrible as others have reported. I do play with an XBOX controller because of the poor mouse optimization.

What tweaks have you done? I'm trying to get the most performance out of the game as possible. So far i've enabled skyrim to use more than 2gb of ram, no more blocky faces, detailed faces, enhanced blood textures, and enhanced night skyrim. the only ones that made that much difference are the night sky and using over 2gb of ram.

The UI is definitely a step backwards from even Oblivion which was itself rather limited compared to Morrowwind. Of course you can tell they've progressively made the games more console friendly but come on, the amount of scrolling in the menus is pretty ridiculous. What's even more maddening is that you can't even check out your character after you've equipped anything. You have to go in-game to do that. What the heck? I really hope Bethesda is reading the complaints and working to rectify at least most of them. The menus are the biggest issue to me now that I've become accustomed to the uneven framerate and texture flicker. Overall though they don't change my opinion that this is an incredible game. Joining The Companions has some interesting side effects on your character.

Funny. I love the menus. I think they are simple and to the point. But I play with a ps3 controller on pc. IMHO they just need to add a character preview to the menu and it would be perfect.

Has anyone found any good mining spots near whiterun or ivarstead?

That was my experience with Oblivion. For that game, I ended up sticking with just a few mods that focused on improving the user interface, draw distance and environmental features.

Some simple .ini changes shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

I'm really resisting the urge to play this. I hear it runs like total crap on crossfire setups. ATI Crossfire drivers for it are supposed to come out for it this week, but ironically Arkham City will beat it. That said I'm not expecting AC to have good CF support either. ATI's CF support really sucks lately. Never again... I'm tempted to dump my 3 6950s for 2 580s...

Runs great on my 580 sli setup. Smooth as butter and never a hickup. I've been enjoying myself more than I'd though but it just seams they took so much time to build the world, they forgot to do anything with the fight mechanics (probably the worst I've ever played in a game) they are so horrible that I still can't figure out how people can think it's good. you hack and chop and it doesn't look like anythings happening, then dead or you get a bit of a kill animation. Very very lame.
Even with that, I still like to steal everything i can find and just run around.

I finally put modded .inf's in, and got my 280 GTX's, to accept the 285.79 beta drivers, which have an sli profile for Skyrim. Didn't notice any improvement with both cards running, when I was in Riften.

Are some cities pulling down peoples frame rates? The cities more CPU dependent, with all the AI's running around?

Outside, I run max rezz, with a high setting, ultra decals, and the FXAA on. Very very smooooooooth.

That seems to be the case. The assessment at Tom's Hardware shows that this game is heavily CPU dependent if you have a good GPU, yet it isn't optimized for more than two threads. It is worth overclocking your CPU to as high as you are comfortable with if your GPU doesn't present a limitation.

Maybe you guys are aware already, but I noticed significant fps increases in cities like Riften when I allowed Skyrim to read <2GB memory.

Everything on max settings, with a Q6600 and GTX 560ti (nothing OC'ed), then again I'm only playing at 1080p.

Don't understand why they would limit the game to 2GB of ram...

I think the lack of modern CPU optimizations is the most annoying aspect. With a good GPU running ultra settings at 1080p, overclocking an Intel 2500K from stock speed to 4.5GHz can take the minimum frame-rate from around 35fps to about 50fps.

It's a good thing that the Sandy Bridge "K" CPUs overclock with ease.

HardOCP did a Skyrim ini tweaking article today that looks pretty good. Specifically, the shadow modifying sections are of great interest. The game will render much nicer shadows, if you tell it to.
