PS3 Audio...HDMI or Optical

I need some help here. I just got a new panasonic plasma G25 series. I already have a Marantz SR5002 AV receiver and a PS3 as a source. Initially I ran the HDMI through the amp to the TV. Movies sounded good and most games but I noticed an issue. When playing Black Ops or World at War Zombies and boarding a window that is driectly behind you, the audio of the boards hitting the window disapears. If you have played the game you would understand.

The issue is I don't remember this being an problem with my old setup using an optical out of the PS3. So I switched back to the optical and sure enough the audio sounds fill in behind you like they should.

I tried different settings on the PS3 and the amp but the hdmi setup just dosen't sound right in this game. Everything else sounds fine. Am I missing something here or should I give up on the HDMI and go to the optical?

If you have LPCM set to 7 channels but only have 5 speakers plugged into your amp that could be the problem

I tried the HDMI in bitstream and PCM. For both settings I let the ps3 pick the automatic audio output on the HDMI. There were 10-15 choices and the PS3 checked maybe 5 of them off. Does this make sense?
