So you can plug in your ps3, buy some glasses and be watching a 3d movie or playing a 3d game?

EDIT: I don't know how good Acer is at hitting their promise dates (it may be June, or later, until we see it in the USA).

Up-converted is hardly a 1080P resolution Image.. Well not in my mind.

Mikewarrior -- They didn't say it was equivalent to a 1080p image. It's main "claim to fame" is that its 3D performance is superb compared to most under $10K (1080p) PJs. If you are looking for a 2D PJ, look elsewhere.

Most AVS members who have the H5360 (the non-BD version) claim that it puts out a 3D picture that beats all flat panel 3D HDTVs and is actually slightly better than the new JVC RS40/50/60 models, for 3D only.

The advantage of the H5360BD is that it can be run directly from a 3D capable BD player, without the need for the Optoma 3D-XL box (~$400) or an HTPC (with the appropriate video card with a BD drive). However, you will be locked into using the DLP-Link glasses (which can be quite reasonable in price).

They word it to make it seem like it can, but it is only up-conversion...
like a 1080P DLP does for a 720P image, or the 360 does for a
720P native game set to 1080P resolution.

A monitor has a max resolution, and to say it does many different is true,
but it can't display any more pixels, or Dots than it's max. A native 720P projector
can't display more than what it's capable of.

Mikewarrior -- Right! All digital displays can only show their native resolution. For the H5360BD, this is 1280 x 720.

The H5360BD can accept many different resolution sources, but they are either up-scaled (480) or down-scaled (1080) to 1280 x 720. Also, all interlaced sources (480i or 1080i) are de-interlaced to progressive (480p or 1080p) before being scaled and displayed.

If the image is not 16:9 (1.78:1), then not all native pixels are used. A 4:3 (old TV & movies) will only use 960 x 720 of the pixels. A wide-screen movie, say 2.35:1, will only use 1280 x 544 of the pixels. A 2.40:1 movie will only use 1280 x 533 pixels. These facts (substitute the native resolution) are basic to any digital display, regardless of type.

Bob7145 -- Monitors can accept many input resolutions, but digital monitors still can only display their native resolution. To say otherwise is merely adding to the confusion of the general public (otherwise known as FUD => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_u...inty_and_doubt).

True 24p is a Sony feature on their BD players. Normally, film shot at 24fps is converted by 3:2 pulldown to 29.97fps (nominal 30fps) and shown at (2x30) 60hz. For 24p, then you'd need a hz that can show that such as 48, 72, 96 or bingo==120hz. Thus it's probably 5:5 pulldown.

I am considering cancelling my order for the 3DXL, and will wait to upgrade my H5360 to the BD version. It doesn't make sense now to wait for the 3DXL when it will be ready around the same time as the H5360BD for about the same combined price.

Where has anyone seen that this is arriving in April and the price. I searched the web and found nothing.

That's some messed up news, let's hope we can flash the firmware on our H5360 to the H5360BD but i doubt it.

I am thinking about buying another Acer for the Nvidia solution since
I am happy with it and don't need 1.4. Is it crazy to think that way?

Or will the new one also support Nvidia?

Yes, I read on a german site that it can be used with Nvidia glasses, but would need a PC to plug in the emitter for the sync, so from that perspective nvidia owners would not gain by getting the newer model in my opinion.

That's good to hear. I was on fence about ordering the current model for $500 from NewEgg or waiting. Seems like the only reason to wait for most is PS3 support. Since I'm building a htpc with 3D anyway I won't gain anything worth the wait + cash, right?

That is nice to know that the nvidia solution will still be
supported with the new model. Guess I won't be picking
up any extra glasses on the cheep!

Bob7145 -- All that link says is that the H5360BD will accept a 1920 x 1080 input. It doesn't say what it will do with it (which is to down-scale it to 1280 x 720 before displaying the image).

My statement still stands.

These are the pixel counts for various TV sources:

•480p = 338,000 pixels / frame
•720p = 922,000 pixels / frame
•1080i = 1,037,000 pixels / frame
•1080p = 2,074,000 pixels / frame

So any source less than 1080p on a 1080p projector is upscaled--pixels are interpolated--to match the projector resolution. The same in reverse for a 720p projector. Any signal greater than 720p is downscaled--pixels interpolated. So you can see it's about a 2 to 1 ratio going from 1080p to 720p. So let's say you have two pixels side-by-side, one red, and one blue. The scaler has to decide what to represent when to downscale--red or blue, so it looks for other close pixels to see if there is an association with them and then "decides." Thus you will likely change both resolution, colors, brightness and contrast in the operation. Same with upscaling. That's why a 720p image doesn't look much better on a 1080p projector. Why would it? That said, there are a lot of different scaling filters that try to improve on this--like the old analog CRT days--see curtpalme.com

One of the news releases, I saw, hinted that the MSRP was around $800, IIRC. The answer to your question is "Yes". You get the functionality of having a built-in Optoma 3D-XL (~$400) for around $200 higher price.

If one uses a HTPC, am I correct in assuming one still needs to use "3D" video cards?
