Official Sony HX929 Owner's thread (46HX929, 55HX929, 65HX929) No Price Talk - Page 35

There should be ZERO flashlighting. My B8500 and my LX9500's had no flashlighting whatsoever. If you get an HX929 with flashlighting I would say your settings are way off, or you got a dud. I would not tolerate one iota of flashlighting, and I would send it right back. Even my second C8000, which was inferior edge-lit, did not suffer from flashlighting, although there was a bit of faint flaslighting in the bottom left-hand corner of my first one. I could tolerate a tiny bit of flashlighting on a cheaper edge-lit, but on a spendy local-dimmer like the HX929? Absolutely unacceptable! I would send it right back if it did not clear up after the panel accumulates some hours.

I can say: YES! I got it in today @ ~8:30AM, mounted, and been watching all day. Almost purchased the D8000 but I absolutely LOVE this set. No regrets!

Sharp and Samsung may have setteld their lawsuits, but the first link actually provides more detail on what Sharp thought Samusung was actually infringing upon. The other link just gives more info on the lawsuit. Below is an expert from the first link.

Quote:
According to the complaint, (1) the ‘140 and ‘075 Patents generally relate to a “Vertically Aligned (‘VA’) LCD device that provides improved viewing angle and better contrast,” (2) the ‘192 Patent generally relates to an “LCD device having improved γ characteristics at wide viewing angles,” (3) the ‘994 patent generally relates to an “LCD device having improved weight, reliability, size, and cost,” and (4) the ‘588 Patent generally relates to “image processing circuitry.”
It's hard to say but I'm wondering if the "Improved viewing angle and better contrast" could be related to the full aray local dimming? I do find it peculiar that both companies stopped making full array local dimming sets after these lawsuits, didn't sharp at one time make one also?

Does the HX929 perform much better in the banding departement specifically?

First off the local dimming is way better on the LG. LG also has way better viewing angles and colors. The motion on the lg is smoother than the sony. Do your research. LG has more Zones that the HX909. The only downside to the LX9500 is the banding. The new panel replacements will fix the problem. Over time my banding has decreased. I am waiting for the HX929 to become available at best buy so I can take one home and do a side by side comparison of the LX9500 and the HX929. I should have the HX929 in about 24 hours I am just waiting for a call from my friend at best buy so I can pick one up.
Ur tripping the 909 is a much better tv set than the LG. Its like ur comparing Kia to Mercedes. U can't win this debate.

Not so sure. Typically, I don't notice any (that is, without looking for them specifically) during video or gradient background. However, I did notice some banding when Sony's default "No signal." background kicks in. Then again, it could be just a poor quality background image.

Just finished watching "Tangled" 3D on my 55" and thought it was very impressive. I'm not a huge 3D fan but had to admit it was very compelling. I haven't gotten anywhere near 100 hours but can't wait to get this thing properly calibratedso it can really shine.

I've seen the big debate in here about how good or not so good this lcd is but I've got to say it's a huge step up from my XBR3 and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's certainly is not perfect and it is not well calibrated out of the box but, in my opinion, it's the best Sony to date...by far. Enjoy it if you own it....if you're on the fence take the plunge....if you don't like it then you can enjoy something else :-)

I used a calman to calibrate both sets and the LX9500 was hands down better in every aspect and catagory. You don't have to take my word for it, just read the reviews or go to Cnet.com their review will coincide (agree) with mine.

It is coincide not "co inside" lol. Let's try and talk about the HX929 which is arguably one of the best sets of 2011 hands down.
Yes, as Nick said, stop comparing other tvs in the 929 thread. Compare to the 929 all you want, but LG vs. 909 discussion and other nonsense does not belong here.

As an unhappy previous owner of the Samsung D8000 that has followed both owner threads very careful over the last 2 months, here's what i've found:
The HX929 is getting about ~95% positive user feedback so far, while the D8000 is only getting about ~50% positive user feedback so far (and that's being generous on the D8000 - go look at the thread yourself).

Much less complaints over here, and i'm not surprised the D8000 just wasn't impressive to me. So many issues with the set I can't even begin to understand why someone would be happy blowing that kind of money on it. I'm sure if someone was coming from a CRT or a 5 year old LCD, that the D8000 might seem attractive at it's price range because they have nothing better to compare it too, but when compared to the HX929.. it doesn't really seem in the same ballpark. Samsung has really went downhill. The only negative feedback i'm seeing on the HX929 is minor blooming and clouding. Clouding is probably settings related, and blooming is kind of expected on a local dimming set

The D8000 suffers from blooming too, but instead of a minor glow around objects it lights the entire screen up, which is far far worse. Watching my Nine Inch Nails Live blu-ray on the D800 is just an eye sore. The blacks go from gray to black to gray to black every few seconds.

I take user feedback with a grain of salt, as you never know how experienced the user is or what their previous TV was that they are comparing it with. I have no doubt in my mind that CNET will rate this TV better than the D8000, as will most other professional review sites.

I certainly want to totally agree with you Nick and also you, MaxPL. I got to tell all of you that the reason i came here was simply to learn about the HX9 because this is a great arena to do so. Not to criticize anyone in particular, but frankly i don't have any interest in any of these other sets, unless it is a head's up comparison to the HX929. I don't care about Samsung, LG, Sharp, lawsuits, patents, and etc., if none of which is relevant to the HX929. I have 2 of them coming in next week (one for me & one a gift) and i am very anxious to get them. Also, sharing info back and forth among owners. Anyway, sorry to vent, but i guess us Longhorns and Cornhuskers are just that way........

I saw one poster claiming that The 929 3D degraded as his head tilted. I don't understand how that could happen if alternate frame display per eye is used. Perhaps if there was crosspolarizaton but I wouldn't think that would be used in this application.

Anyone know how Sony does 3d?

Anyone corroborate?

Jim
That problem is caused by Sony's 3D glasses , not the TV. This is not a new problem , it has been discussed in 2010 Bravia threads.

HB

Can other glasses be used?

Here is a panel uniformity comparison between the 55D8000 I owned and my 55HX929. No contest in favor of the Sony.

Jim

That user claims to have seen the HX929 at Best Buy for a few minutes. And he's been talking crap about the HX929 ever since - blacks are not black enough, blue tint, major clouding, flashlighting, terrible blooming, and 3D is light years behind Samsung - because glasses aren't bluetooth.
To me it seems like his return window on his D8000 had expired, so he's trying to convince himself that his Samsung is as good as Sony. Funny stuff

Don't post this in the Samsung thread - there aren't enough HX929's for the participants of this thread - so we don't want Samsung people to start exchanging their TVs for this one

Incredible Difference bpmurr !
The only advantages to the Samsung I see so far is the really small bezel and it mounts to it's stand better. The 55HX929 is pretty loose in the stand and tilts a little to one side. Anyone else notice that?
Isn't there something in the manual about being able to adjust it so it will be perfectly level?

There was a thing about titling it back 6 degrees. I'll have to look in terms of leveling.

I just got mine today. Sony style called me after i purchased the TV on April 25.

Its 55inch and it looks like a perfect set. I looked for flash lights and clouds and didnt find any. Time for some settings for the tv

Just some quick thoughts about this set vs the last local dimming LCD I had the XVT553SV.

-The Sony doesn't have anywhere as much blooming as the XVT553SV
-Blooming becomes more noticeable past the 45 degree viewing angle
-The viewing angle of the Sony is superior to any LCD I've owned and I've had a laundry list, not Plasma good though
-I haven't noticed any weird backlight processing errors on the Sony like I did the XVT553SV. For instance if there was a persons face in a dark room on the XVT553SV it was like the zone got way too much backlight causing it to look washed out. The Sony seems to have better processing in this regard.

Depends on how fast the price keeps dropping.

I think most people spending $3800 on a TV are going to be wall mounting (cost ~$70 for a great wall mount from monoprice). So the stand thing really isn't an issue.

I agree the Samsung physically looks better, but physical looks means nothing when the PQ difference is that far apart.

HX929 wins hands down IMO.

Seems great all around, I mean do you really need plasma viewing angles? I've never met someone who sits more than 45 degrees off angle.

I agree with you. I really liked the design of the D8000 but at the end of the day picture quality is the most important thing to me. As for the viewing angle I think this set has the way most people are going to view it covered. You've always want that crazy person who want the picture to look the same no matter where they sit.
