As some of you might remember from my recent posts, I unfortunately had to replace a 65HX923 with great picture due to bad pixels. The new set doesn't have any bad pixels, however, I just can't get over the feeling that it's image quality is worse than the first TV, especially black levels, which I remember as "pitch black", but on this they are just "good blacks". Of course, since I don't have the first set anymore, it could be my eyes playing tricks on me. All other settings/surroundings are exactly the same, I even tried playing the same material, just to make sure. It is kind of like this set has much more haloing/blooming than the previous set.
When displaying a completely black screen, it does display with perfect blacks, meaning that if it hadn't been for the lights on the TV itself, I wouldn't think it was on at all. However, when a movie has blackbars, they are only "good blacks", and I don't mean just in special cases, like there being a channel logo close, or that the part closest to the movie is a big brighter, the entire blackbar is definately visible in a dark or close to dark room. If my memory isn't all wrong, this was not the case with the first TV, where part of the blackbar could be slightly brighter but the rest would be pitch black.
I should perhaps add that I have been playing around A LOT with all different brightness, contrast, backlight etc. but it doesn't make any differene (at least does not solve the problem), and made sure LED Dynamic is set to "standard". I have verified the black bar problem with with build in analog and digital tuner as well as with HTPC over HDMI and see no difference between them.
One a sidenote, I did notice something that surprised me a bit. When "forcing blackbars", like squeezing a 16:9 image to 4:3 format, I noticed that when I turn up brightness enough, even the black sidebars would go grey instead of black all of a sudden, is this correct behavior, since they are not really part of the actual image?
So, could you please help me figure out if my memory is wrong and my mind is remembering things to be better than they really was, or if this is perhaps also a bad set, that should be replaced/returned? Or perhaps I should rephrase it like this, should a fully working HX923/HX929 have better blacks than I have now?
