You're quite right in that there is some risk involved, although many times a customer will return an item for perfectly mundane reasons (changed his mind, buyer's remorse, not what he expected, etc.) or for some arcane flaw that wouldn't bother most people. I've had good experiences in the past with "open box" electronics.
And, as I previously stated, the Sony 18-month warranty is supposed to apply to these otherwise new 55HX929's. Otherwise, there is a 30-day return policy but I could be liable for a 15% restocking fee (which I would expect to be waived in case of a major defect).
