D8000 has terrible banding issues, the screen looks "dirty" when it pans, like something is on the screen but there isn't anything there. It also needs the right conditions to handle local dimming correctly because it's edgelit, some scenes will have nice blacks and look good.. then it'll go to another scene where there's too much brightness so the blacks turn to gray. The only way to stop this is to turn your brightness down to where the point where you are losing details in dark scenes/shadows.

I've always had a strong eye on the XBR4. I've always wanted it, but at that time, the television was selling a 46" with what we can get one now for a 60" at MSRP. So it was a luxury I couldn't afford back then. The design was obviously subjective, some loved it and some did not. I could care less if the BEZEL was as thick, since the design allowed 4 high quality speakers and 2 tweeters inside the bezel. The glass surrounding base added a touch of sophistication and class. Plus the bezel made a 46" look larger than the screen size. A 52" probably looked like a 60" in comparable size today in dimension.

My friend has a 52" XBR4 and I envy his with my Samsung 55" B650 2009 model. I understand your position, because I thought the XBR4 had a better picture than mine! Plus, if you look at pictures of my television, people make fun of the V-chin JayLeno design!
Then I got a 2010 monolithic beauty. It's nice indeed. But for the odd of me, I still want that GLASS DESIGN border w/ good speakers!!

I'll trade two 55" for your XBR4 PLEASE!!!

Are there any XBR8 owners who are getting a HX929? I'd definitely be interested in that comparison. My XBR4 was a big upgrade over my XBR1, and my XBR8 is a huge upgrade over my XBR4. Right now my XBR4 is seeing very light duty in the bedroom.

I'm somewhat interested in getting a good 3D set, but I don't want any compromises in 2D quality.

Not the best pics, some may not give the best look of the set but in live action here in my living room it is very nice. I just watched alice in wonderland 3D to custom set the 3D settings and there is no flickering except when glasses first turn on and virtually no ghosting and the motion looks great ( you may have to play with the settings a little) also 2d is phenomenal!

Where do you live Nick? I'm in Toronto and trying to figure out if it's been released here or not.

Thanks.

Nice pics! How does the black level and screen uniformity look from your early observation?

Black levels look pretty good right now, I may play with the settings some more to get it looking even better. Screen uniformity seems to be outstanding thus far.

That would be the RS-232C Control connector.

is that built in or did you add that? seems like it makes the TV deeper than 1.5''
it is built in out of the box suprisingly

Thanks for the feedback, I am very intrigued by the 929. I have a 55 on preorder with Abt, but they aren't expecting them until the end of May as of right now. I look forward to your impressions as you get more hands on time with it. Did you you get a free 3d kit with your order?

Strange to have such a high tech tv with rs232 rather than usb. What is it used for?

So no way to remove that? seems like it would make it hard to slim mount the TV on a wall

There's a USB in there. I'm also not sure what that RS232 does. The HX909 had it as well.
What does it do?
Could we please get some viewing angle comparison?

Very nice, I preordered mine as well and I could not get a free 3d kit (I called and asked). maybe you will have better luck asking lol. I actually bought mine from Amazon for a decent price.

Looks like this might be the last year to get a top of the line, in house Sony lcd.
Check out the last sentence in the last paragraph.

I just got my 46" set and definitively have some flashlighting issues. The bottom left corner in particular but also the bottom right. I believe there is some minor clouding as well but that doesn't really bother me. Not sure what to do at this point. Otherwise, I'm certainly enjoying the PQ of the set. Going to try the 3D shortly.

mainly used for automation systems with many connections to other devices such as in museums, offices, etc. you could use in home if you desire or had the equipment to utilize it.
