Crutfield is doing a pre-order on this unit for $5,398. Anybody here placed a pre-order yet?

I remember when the XBR8 first came out. Price was around $6k+ and it was only a 55". Now you can get a bigger screen for a little less money.

The list was longish and I'm tired so hopefully I can recall all the reasons

- there are several people reporting handshake issues bt the Panny vt25 and the Onkyo 3/5008 receivers; I have the 5008 so that had me concerned

- I love the PQ of the vt25 but am concerned about the rising/floating blacks; even if improved on the vt30 we won't know for a long time whether it's truly licked

- daytime viewing = need brighter set

- I am hypnotized by the pop of LCD colors

- hx909 pro reviews and user reports mostly fantastic; saw a smaller 909 (the 46") and was very impressed

- didn't mind the wait

- free shipping and no tax from Abt makes the price diff not bad even though the Sony is definitely more

- I think that was about everything. Can't imagine going wrong with either

As far as I understand, the TVs themselves are assembled in Mexico, panels are made in S. Korea, and the other parts are probably made everywhere - from Japan to China to who knows where....

Last I checked, they were assembled at a factory owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai
Precision (Sony retained 10% ownership) in Tijuana, Mejico.

I don't quite understand the part about getting one that is "on" when shipped.

I think he's referring to possibly getting a unit that is well radiated (with uranium,plutonium) courtesy of the Fukushima disaster.

That is what I thought too. I hope though that since the parts will be passing many other countries before reaching USA in the form of fully assembled TVs - that any trace of radiation would not be left unnoticed by authorities....

I will also confirm end of April as I spoke to an ABT rep to confirm my order for the 46in.

I will warn you that ABT does charge your card before it ships unless you call and specify them to not charge until shipped.

maybe it works differently for local sales but he just asked to put a deposit on my card. Since I got a 2 yr no interest deal on my Abt account, it wasn't a big deal to me.

A deposit can be legal. A pre-pay for an item they are unable to ship is typically prohibited by statute, certainly prohibited by their Visa/MC merchant agreement, and all-around sleazy.

I just was on the ABT website and they showed the HX929 65" as discontinued???

This has >already< been addressed. They tag it as disco-ed to stop taking pre-orders without removing it off their site. They are unwilling to take more pre-orders than some/all of their promised allocation. Given the TV is not shipping for possibly 5 months and volumes are uncertain, they are being prudent.

I don't see that TV on abt website at all - when I search for it - it says "Sorry, no matches were found containing 65hx929"
I wonder if it has anything to do with their Samsung joint venture? Samsung don't have any 65 inch TVs announced for 2011 either, do they? Why didn't Sony stay with Sharp? They could buy those 70 inch panels that seem to be less expensive than Samsung's 65 inchers....

Yesterday it was searchable, now it isn't. Typing 55hx929 yields an immediate result where as 65hx929 gets nothing. It could just go hand in hand with what rogo said. If they don't want people ordering it until they have supply, then they probably don't want people searching for it either.

The 65 won't even be out till August, so whatever amount of pre-orders they have is probably already "too many" in some sense. I wouldn't spend much more time worrying about why it's not listed. We're a ways away from having any reason to believe Sony won't be shipping 65s this year.

Assembled in Mex? Really... I think the bulk of Sony panels are still coming from the Samsung/Sony plant (funny... isn't it). They are buying a lot from Sharp too. Don't know the percentage.
