You just have to press that and then it displays the language like English or German. But if you press i+ then it also shows if the language has Dolby Digital or just without. So it can happen that for example you have 2 soundtracks for the TV channel, "English" and "English Dolby Digital" of course the latter one sounds better even if just stereo.

PS: I just realised that the remote control for the US and European market looks pretty different.

European:

US:

So where we have the audio button you guys have the jump button. What does that do by the way?

No not yet I'm going to see if I can't put those settings under CUSTOM and leave mine as STANDARD (as they were cal'd to) and be able to flip/flop picture between settings for comparison. Gotta play with it later. Anyone else notified of a firmware update today ? Did you upload it & install it yet, if so, results ? Thx Ounce of precaution rather than hours of hassling !

I will continue my adjustments as it seems what ever software fix that was done changed my tv.

Can you explain in more detail about your DSE experience? You had DSE, but with those setting changes it disappeared or considerably decreased?

You can change in the menu if you want to use the TV speakers or the amplifier. Unfortunately the TV just can push out Dolby Digital on the optical output, but it can not push out DTS which is a shame. Half of the Blu-Ray movies have that .

I haven't tried those settings yet but take into consideration these panels are shipped with hardware and software installed assembly line style so the pre-set settings may not always be the same. So in some cases these setting may not be "spot-on" when I tried CNET's settings I stepped back and looked (not impressed) ran it for a few days to see if it will burn itself in, still NG, but yet there are people who swear by those settings, so basically it's all relative, It doesn't hurt to try, but be sure you makes notes of your present setting (just in case)

The best way to achieve MAXIMUM PQ is via Professional ISF/THX certified Technion, like D-nice, K. Miller, Ed Johnson, Chad & others, to drain out that last bit of perfection out, but sometimes when properly calibrated it becomes so accurate it's boring, it just looks like it's lost its Zip, if ya know what I mean. But a good professional calibrator well set, your set, up to its max and also make any adjustments to make you happy (pop it a little)

Unit-to-unit sample variations

If your TV channel or disc player over HDMI has Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, then the TV can pass it on to the digital audio receiver. So all it can do is passthrough the source audio, if 5.1 then 5.1

PS:
Someone start a thread over what panel is installed in your set, once you get into SM that information is displayed first screen at the bottom part. I know sometimes its a Samsung (LTxxx) and othertimes its Sony S-LCD (SQL or FQL). Sony panels had less manufacturing artifacts over samsung ie banding, clouding etc (NO PANEL IS 100% PERFECT)

I don't have the "crease" problem. Or if I do I can't see it. Was curious so I got into the service mode. Very bottom left was "FQLF55ODTO101". Is this the Sony panel?? (I hope). My build date is August.....

I got my HX929 46in in June and I enjoyed it since then.
But the only thing that keeps bothering me is remote control lag that happens most of the time. I've searched this thread and google but nothing except for game input lag shows up.
So most of the time when I press on any remote button (channel, volume, input, etc) TV lags before it executes the action, sometimes it doesn't even do anything and I have to press several times. I checked the firmware and its up to date.
Is my remote just bad or is my TV defective? Anybody else experienced this?
Should I call Sony support for this?
Thanks!

Maybe you should try with new batteries. The only time I feel the TV is not responsive to the remote controll buttons is right after I turn on the TV. In the first 20-30 secs, nothing happens when I press the direct channel buttons 1-9. But volume and Prog - + work. After about 20 secs it gives the message on the screen that Skype signed in and HDD was registered. After that everything is fine, even direct channel buttons work.

When I preess OPTIONS or HOME it can take up to 1-2 secs to load which is I think is slow. This TV has a strong panel, CPU, so it shouldnt take the TV to load the OPTIONS or home Menu for 1-2 secs. So there is definetely room for software improvment. We will see if they address these issues in the future software upgrades.

If ya can't see it, then stop looking, it becomes an obsessivecompulsivedisorder. " I think I see it' if I get really close like 10-12" and at a sharp angle from the side on certain colors when the screens bright ! thats the way I watch TV myself 10" away & off at an extreme angle. ? Under realistic viewing its not visible and if you do have this problem it will be quite evident and obvious ! But it is like any other manufactured product (there's variances and consistences that create minor variations and an occasional Whoops !!) productionline variances.

How do you translate this to the European remote control?

1. Turn tv OFF wait 5sec then sequentialy press:
2. Display
3. 5
4. Volume UP
5. Power ON

THEN SEQUENTIALY:

PRESS 1
THEN 2
THEN 0 (This takes you into VIDEO adjustments- WHITE level)
THEN ENTER
THEN ENTER

ADJUST SETTINGS 0(darkest)-10(whitest) HERE ELIMINATE CREASE IF VISSIBLE ALSO AFFECTS CONTRAST IN A VERY POSITIVE WAY.
THEN ENTER (your screen will turn completely WHITE/DARK according to your entry) RETURN TAKES YOU BACK TO PREVIOUS SCREEN)

THEN TO SAVE SETTINGS:

PRESS "JUMP"
THEN "MUTING"
THEN "0"
THIS WRITES/SAVES ALL YOUR SETTINGS IN THE SM (WRITE WILL MOMENTARY TURN RED AS IT SAVES YOUR SETTINGS)
TURN TV OFF
YOUR (SETTINGS ARE SAVED)
YOU CAN NOW TURN IT BACK ON

i think the variation of unit to unit is minimal if there is any, and people opinion on different settings is subjective even on the same set.
my opinion based after trying CNET which has too much contrast and yellowish tent, and Akaddensis settings which was more accurate but dim

i think this setting can satisfy all the family due to the accurate picture without being too dim as the other settings, therefor no need to convince them that they have to adapt to the dim picture because it is more professional

This set has been out since March and there is NO ONE that had their set professionally calibrated? If so please list your settings so we can compare!

Well, I called Sony support and there is no way to go back to the previous firmware. Once you update you are pretty much stuck is what I was told. I can have a local service person look at it but I am sure that will not do any good.

True! I had a Pioneer Elite Pro 720HD calibrated for close to $900.00, and it looked so bad, I called the calibrator at his hotel and told him to put back the original factory settings. He tried, but since he did not wright down the original factory settings he could never get it to look like it did from the factory. I never really enjoyed the television after that, but kept it for 9 years because it cost 6k new. I gave it away to the Knights of Columbus and replaced it with the 55" 929. For your info, 6500 degrees kevin is not all that great looking.

Likely still earthquake/tsunami supply issues and/or yield problems for the 65" panels and/or Gorilla Glass.

For example, Toyota is just now getting production back to where it was.

However, on the 929, I am only getting 2 channel from 5.1 source even though the source, itself indicates its outputting 5.1 Dolby Digital. I don't want to use optical on my processor for different sources and have to change the input on the receiver for each source. If everything is connected to the television, you only have one source, the optical out on the television going to one source on your precessor or receiver. So the 929 should output Dolby Digital 5.1 just like the xbr8 when a 5.1 Dolby Digital signal is being played.

i want to do the same.... hook everything up with hdmi and audio out to my receiver with optical out.. but i get pcm not dolbly digital idk maybe its my receiver but i tried everything

Is there any reason why I should not install this update? I think I read a post someone trying 2 revert to a previous firmware. Sorry if the answer is in this thread, little difficult to navigate from phone

Yes once I changed Custom to Standard my picture instantly got clear and brighter. The DSE I was seeing was a very washed out look where only certain channels and shows looked good (espn, cnn, hbo for example) and sports looked bad.

This tv is very very picky and each user needs to find there own comfort lvl and adjust the settings to there own liking. The settings being passed around in this forum are a great starting point for new users, just keep tweaking the many many settings until you like what you see.

Whatever the delay, hopefully they made use of the time and have addressed what ever 'fail' problems, crease, etc. before it hits the street. I have heard "grapevine" style that the working PQ is nothing short of WOW !!

cons weak sound
...... and $$$$$$$ worth it, no doubt about it.
Affordable ......questionable (but, so are all the BIG SIZES, afterall SIZE is everything !!
But this set is aimed at the higher end of the market not a lot of people are going to jump on this set unless they consider themselves Videophiles and a true Videophiles would be watching and Listening through a home theater setup and not expecting the "full Impact experience". I just hope that when it does Debut is 'at it's Best'.
