The room I'm using my TV in has quite a bit of light coming in from a glass door on the left hand side, so that may be an issue. Could be that the environment for HTM's settings was a bit darker.

I made a few revisions to the HTM settings as follows
I re-adjusted the following:
Picture from 70 to >80
Brightness from 53 to >43
Color from 45 to >48
Results: a little more pop & crisp deep blacks

Hows DSE and Uniformity on your set?

My set is Aug build. I'll be entirely honest here, perhaps my eyes aren't as trained to look for certain anomalies, but I couldn't find anything to complain about as far as the picture goes after watching Tron and a couple other blu rays. Couldn't find any DSE and uniformity looked consistent across the board. It does bloom around white objects on a black background, but that is the only scenario I've been able to find that isn't reallly, really good.

I came from an LG42LH90 and I loved that set. I would be frank if I could spot an issue with the Sony but so far this set has met my expectations for anset this price. Considering how thin it is, it blows my mind how exceptional it looks. At my local Modia theater store I saw the small model and it looked like it had a weird sort of bloom that ran vertically down the screen, what looked like a wide band just slightly brighter color than the rest of the screen. It would really show up when the screen was panning. My set shows no such issue thus far. It was weird ... *shrug*

I'm almost ready to buy (55hx929) just needed some opinions on where. I can pick it up at a near by Sony Style store since they actually keep them in stock or I can place an order through Magnolia and wait a few days. I can get 36 months free financing at both stores I'm just not sure where I'm likely to get a newer build and less hassle if I need to return or exchange it. Thanks for any feedback.

Getting a newer build date is just the luck of the draw. I would base my buy on who provides you with the best return policy.

Just called the Sony Style store and they only give 15 days on returns and a 15% re-stocking fee so Magnolia it is, thanks Imrizzo.

My local UK Sony store is saying January! Who knows!

There are no accessory stands available for these sets, other than those offered by Sony.

Just curious. I am so ready to buy the TV (the 55 inches one..) I even pick up a wall mount, sound bar and etc that goes with it. I just wonder, do you guys think that the price will get lower next month due to holiday coming or pretty much will be the same price and should just buy it now! thanks!!

If you are speaking of a table top, I use a Techcraft XM50 I believe. Its sits very low to the point that when you sit in a chair, the tv is eye level. It looks great and its smoked glass bottom compliments the televison. I just put the stand together last night, and I'm impressed.

I bought a BDI Axis years ago that my 55" fits on nicely. It's an open air design that allows for great component airflow. However, the Axis series is discontinued, but the Valera kind of looks like it, although it is shallower in depth.

Can you change the DSE with SM?

Overstock.com has a very large selection of stands and shipping cost is very cheap.

No way that edge lightning will afford this.

I have a 60" NX720 with 3 weeks left to decide to return it or keep it. Overall I like it and 60" is a great size for my room, but I have not been able to get it adjusted to a point that provides satisfactory shadow detail. Inky blacks, but too much "black crush" if I am accurately describing it. If I can live with a 55" display, for those of you who have compared the NX720 to the HX929, can I expect better shadow detail/less black crush? Would you give up 20% screen real estate for the 55" HX vs the 60" NX?

It seems from reviews a properly configured 929 gives excellent shadow detail. Home theater mag said it was excellent and the VT30 was just barely better.

Woot! I loved my 34XBR960 up until it died a little over a year ago. Black Friday cannot come soon enough!

Yes you can drasticaly reduce DSE in the SM with WHITE level setting. I had it fairly noticeable now i cant see it anymore. DSE is an LCD manufacturing signature from the several panel filter and bonding/glue and other elements aging during use and manufacturing process. Some sets are more pronounced than others but all have them its not vissible during normal viewing only on white screens. Anyway my panel is being switched tommorrow so will see if i keep the new one or stick with the old.

So for 11 ft would you stay w/ 46" or move up to 55"? I understand fixed pixel count spread out over different sizes. It's why I used my 34" xbr 960 for so long. I'm currently using a 40" POS and can't wait to get back to a good tv. I am leaning (heh, pun) towards getting the 55" but even the 46" would be larger than what I am currently using. Your thoughts?

Are the 46" having less crease problems than the 55"? I've been reading for many pages but currently don't recall if that has been mentioned (as I wasn't really seriously thinking 46" - which I am now).

I upgraded from a 45" Sharp LC-45GD6U the HX929 55", and my viewing position is 12' away. 1080p looks great, although it doesn't quite have the pop of the a similar sized 46". I went to BB and saw both the 46" and 55" HX929 from 12' and chose the 55" as the slightly less pop issue was not a big factor for me.

At that distance I would certainly move up to the 55" display.

I'm also torn between the 46" and 55". I can be as far away as 12ft, but I prefer to sit closer. I am used to sitting 3-4ft from my 34XBR960 and love the immersion factor. I want to be totally immersed, however I don't want to see pixels.

I'm worried that if I get the 55" I'll tend to move back.. thus losing immersion factor. I like to play games and I just cannot get involved if I'm too far back. I know with the 46" I can scoot myself up close and have the warm and fuzzy immersion feeling but damn... sometimes you just wanna go all out!

Someone's bound to have been in my situation. Let me know how it worked out for you and if I ultimately decide on the 55".. is it overkill at 6-8ft?

Is the flat panel shootout this weekend? I am anxious to see how this tv does.
Hey all, I've been seeing posts with people listing their panel's. From what I've read there are different manufacturers (Sony or Sharp?) ? Should I be hoping that I have a Sony panel, or does it not really matter much?
I am looking to pick up a new stand for the 55"HX929. I want to make sure I get something,so that the viewing height is pretty close to eye level. I'll be sitting about 7-8 feet away. Anyone have any ideas on the height of stand needed? Dont want anything that will be too low or way too high, thanks for the help. John

I've owned both sizes and can concur - this logic that if you move closer does not work. Simply put the larger panel brings out more detail and provides and immersion - I now view a 60" at 8.5' and crave the 70" model Elite but when I jumped from the smaller 45" panel viewing was new again and immersive whereas there was nothing wrong with the smaller panel but it could not match the immersion factor at all - better term for HT Immersion is really WoW factor.

I've owned a number of panels in larger sizes 55", 57", 60"(two) and have smaller panels being viewed where immersion is not needed.

Bigger has always been better in my experience and I crave that 70" Elite once the price gets down a few K or Sony ever actually delivers a 65" 929.

Thanks for the feedback Westa (and others).

I will take your advise and go for bigger, since I always wanted a bigger display anyway. I agree when I see huge displays in the stores I'm always floored with a good feed.

Now I have the ultimate decision between a 55HX929 and 65VT30. It's too bad there is no 65HX929. I can get the 65VT30 for not much more than the 929 in my area but I'm not sure I want to go back to plasma. I currently have a 50" Kuro and the lack of frame interpolation is getting on my last nerve.

Thanks again guys.
