Where do Kuro Elite lovers flee in 2011?

I just got a credit on an extended warranty claim on my beloved Kuro Signature Elite 101. It seems to me that there probably aren't a lot of them left out there, and I doubt that I can get a deal as good as I did before. I am also more price-sensitive than I was then, so I am hoping something cheaper and very good has come out since then.

I haven't kept my fingers on the pulse of the HDTV world as closely as I did pre-Kuro purchase, but I get the sense that there are simply no sets that have people quite as excited as these things did back then. I am more than willing to do reading and research, but I'd like to know some places to start for likely replacements.

Criteria:

- 50 inches would be the baseline. I can't imagine going smaller, and my wife would never let me get a 60 inch set, but I think I could do in-between.

- Picture quality is the bottom line. Amazing black levels and great color accuracy are, of course, very important to me. I think I am sold on plasma, based on viewing angle alone, but I am willing to consider other sets if viewing angle is not a problem. I didn't get my Kuro calibrated, but using someone else's settings in the ISF interface yielded great results by my eye. Depending on the cost of the set, I may or may not get it professionally calibrated, but I would prefer something where great results can be achieved by user adjustments, rather than paying extra.

- Decent processing for SD content (for the kids, but I can't stand to look at horribly processed SD for as long as I would have to)

- Gaming: I have a PS3. I am not a hardcore gamer, and I don't think I have had any specific issues with my current set, but I wouldn't want a set that specifically is bad for gaming.

- I am happy to get a monitor, rather than a full-on TV, since that is what I already have, and I prefer the cosmetics without speakers that will never get used. This is not incredibly important, but it is a consideration.

- 3D is 99% irrelevant to me. While I would choose a 3D model over a non-3D model with all things being equal, I don't have any desire to sacrifice picture quality or pay any significant amount to get it. If I were to use it, I would probably not use it much, and more so for video games than movies.

- Internet connectivity: While I like the idea of being able to update the firmware over a network connection, etc., I have a Tivo Premiere and a PS3, and I prefer streaming video belongs in a set-top box, not a TV, given the choice. So, once again, these features would be wasted on me, unless I am missing something.

I think that is it. I have mixed feelings. I love my Kuro, but I am also excited to look at new stuff. Thanks in advance for any help.

With a 101FD, anything you can find in 2011 will be a downgrade. Just sit it out for another year and if the apocalypse hasn't killed off most of us, you can see what 2012 holds. ;-)

I was afraid of that answer, but is there anything that holds a candle to it?

Panny VT25 is closest but apart from the constant issues about the black, they are not the best for SD.

D-Nice liked the LG but reflection is always an issue with LG.

Sammy looks like a good all rounder if you can't decide which poison is most painful

Reviews for 2011 models are not out yet so unless you are adventurous you may want to wait first.

That puts you at a disadvantage since the 9th gen (much less the 101FD) has yet to even be matched. Panasonic's new sets don't quite arrive there and then will suffer from a precipitous black level rise. Samsung's have been said to match the 8th Gen Kuro, so that's something (and should not suffer from any rise).

I do have a bias light behind the set, so that does help with black levels. I guess I was trying to lay out all of my criteria, and wondering what sets are thought to be closest. Thanks for the input so far. I hadn't even pondered the glare issue until earlier today when I was looking at some sets in a store, and I remembered the Pioneer sets having less glare than other plasmas.

Well, I can hold out for a little while if the upcoming models show promise. How long should I expect to wait? I remember being skeptical when people said Panasonic would match the Pioneer black levels within a year or two. Sounds like that hasn't happened. Wish I'd been wrong.

I think for the deepest blacks this year, it's local dimming led lcds. The LW7700 from LG is probably a front runner. More led zones, THX and isfccc, using a nano filter to combat banding and screen uniformity issues, as well as haloing and a matte screen finish. They have the widest viewing angles of any lcd tv, too. Comes in a 55" model.

Anyway, that would be my pick.

I doubt they'll be anything better than the 101 in 2-3 years.

Hi,

In the LCD camp, it currently seems (from all the marketing talk & hype) that the upcoming LG LEX-8 "Nano-Tech" Sets & the Toshiba "Cevo" & "Quantum Black" sets are going to be the ones that will set a new standard this year - they really do seem quite promising indeed. There was some talk at CES 2011 that maybe next year, Samsung will also offer something called "Carbon Nano-Tubes" that also promises a great improvement in PQ. It looks like the processing on the Toshiba "Cevo" sets will blow anything else away from what I have read. I really do hope that these developments come to market sooner rather than later - I am more of a Plasma guy & an ex-Kuro owner but the progress the LCD camp is making is very heart warming indeed. Just hope they are not priced to astronomically!

Bazzy!

Thanks for the advice so far. I hope there are some sets to look at soon. I am definitely skeptical of LCDs, and LG and Toshiba, but I'll try to keep an open mind. I think my brain is naturally going to pull me toward a higher-end Samsung or Panny plasma, depending on what they look like, but I am definitely disappointed at the lack of progress on the plasma front.

Where do Kuro Elite lovers flee in 2011?

Sharm el-Sheikh seems to be a popular destination these days.

I don't blame you for being skeptical of LCDs. Decent black levels should not come in zones.

As for the lack of progress, there's a reason Pioneer is no longer making Kuros. The technology was expensive and people weren't willing to pay for it. Having said that, some say there are other areas that newer plasmas are better at and you will only see the difference in black levels on dim scenes in a dark room.

Just buy from a place with a good return policy in case you don't like what you get. Another strategy would be to go for the best bang for the buck while you wait for the next step in PQ (likely OLED, which should easily surpass your Kuro, but those are a good 5 years away) so you don't feel like you're getting ripped off.

I would probably look for a close-out price on a 65 VT-25. Apparently the 65 VT-30 won't be available till late May or early June so you may be able to get a good deal on the 65 VT-25. I would shop around and check often on availability and price, and be prepared to make your move very quickly. The 65 VT-25 is number 1 on several testers lists.
