Should I port my Yamaha NS-50X speakers?

I picked up a used pair of Yamaha NS-50X speakers for $40 in excellent condition. What intrigued me the most about them was that they had sufficient weight, and feature all aluminum drivers. They are also sealed speaker enclosures, and the magnets on each driver, including the tweeter are massive.

They sound great! It takes a bit of tone control adjustment on the amp to get exactly the sound desired, but at the price point I paid they're really nice.

Question is: Should I blow a port in them? I pulled the tweeter and held it away from the enclosure just enough to simulate a port and the low base was significantly improved.

Thoughts? Advice on where to place a port and how large if suggested?

Carefully installed a 1" port just behind the tweeter, and through the batting.

Oh man what an improvement. Improved mid-bass, significantly improved low base, and so much more driver movement.

I contacted Yamaha technical and they didn't know why these were built as sealed units, but were glad to learn of the improvement.

These turned out to be great speakers!

What the tuning of the enclosure now? How did you come up with the tuning for these drivers/enclosure volume?

Actually....you're exactly right!

I've got zero experience with this. After holding the tweeter away from the enclosure to simulate a port however, the sound was so incredibly improved I had to do something. The 1" hole was a W.A.G.

If I can improve it more by some input from more experienced folks here, I'm all ears!

I will tell you however, that I am very pleased with the improvement so far.

I was just kidding around.
Hey, if it sounds good to you than that's all that matters.
Just becareful now that you have ported it, the driver will unload quicker that's why you see more movement. Take it easy until you find out the limits.

I've taken the volume up to levels beyond what they'll be used for (I'm setting up a system for my in-laws) already without problem. They really, really sound so much better than in sealed configuration. Now I don't wanna part with 'em! I've got way too much equipment around here already...mostly Infinity. (Overture one and two's, Primus 360, Reference 2000.6, Pinnacle Digital Towers)

These don't compare to the Infinity towers obviously, but I am impressed with the clarity, soundstage, and bass response coming from such a small package.
