Official LG 47LW5600/55LW5600 "Passive 3D" Owners Thread - Page 11

If you are considering this set buy it you will not be disappointed. I got mine last night, hooked it up real quick to run it through some test and was fairly impressed. Watched Tangled in 3D and it was amazing, everyone in the room was absolutely floored with the picture and the 3D. Picture was bright and crisp absolutely no deterioration of the picture quality because of the passive technology. The only thing i noticed, and I think another reviewer mentioned this as well, is that at the very bottom of the screen the bottom 2 rows of pixels were always green and pink. Not a big deal when watching bright scenes but when watching dark scenes it is very noticeable. This only happened while watching bluray and not while watching tv or gaming. I'm thinking it has to do with the input source and is not the tv, so i will have to play with it and see what i can come up with.

As far as gaming, I had my son play a couple of PlayStation 3 games both converted to 3D and just regular 2D. His verdict is that there is a minor delay but nothing that is a deal breaker. I'm going to try KK's settings this evening and see if that will reduce the delay.

Before i bought this set i was concerned when someone mentioned that this set is not good when watching in a very dark room. Not true at all. This set looked ridiculously good in a dark room. Minor and i mean minor clouding when the screen is all the way dark, however i was the only one who noticed it and i had to look pretty hard to see it.

The only other 'complaint' i have is with the glasses. I have a large window directly behind me when watching and i was getting a glare on the inside of the glasses which was kind of distracting. Again not the sets fault i just have to make some adjustments with my room.

Overall this set is exactly what i was looking for. If you can get an excellent deal on it i say jump right in and make the purchase, it will not let you down. I will play around with it some more and post updates later on.

Thanks a bunch go loobs! Well i just got back from BB & i am a proud new ownder of a 55LW5600 . They had it on display and i was very impressed with the 3D with the real 3D glasses. Way better IMO than the standard flicker expensive glasses. Much more comfortable to wear & it does not darken the picture as much. The set seemed to have great viewing angles. And if you stand 6 feet back like the demo recommended, those "banding" pixelated type lines were not visible as others noted while 3D was active. I was very impressed by the cinema 3D. The Under The Sea demo was awesome the fish actually came out of the screen a bit rather than just adding depth.

Now BB had the set online on sale. But in the store price was a few hundred more . So i asked the guy if they would price match and he said yea i should be able too. I also noticed last week in their ad if you got the TV you got a free LG 3D wifi blu ray player. He also said he would include that in the price. Which i had to go pick up at another store. No big deal. But the wifi blu ray player makes up for the sharp i returned having it built in the TV. & me not having to run another wire through the wall lol.

Now the great part so far. I was a little bummed going from a 60" to a 55". However during the exchange the guy messed up somewhere and actually marked the price down another $100 lol. Now i know the forum rules so i wont say the exact price. But lets just say that there is a 1 and a 7 to start Not bad when the price tag started with a 2 2 lol. I guess today was my lucky day. I am excited to get it setup. I will let you guys know how i make out. Cant wait to try the 3D which i was not a big fan on a few months back. But i have faith with the cinema 3D. And how it is on gaming.

From Wiki:

A set-top box (STB) or set-top unit (STU) is a device that connects to a television and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the television screen or other display device.

Your SA8300HD is your STB. I've tried two different 1.3 HDMI cords and one 1.4 HDMI cord and still get the sound loss with HD frequently. Turning the TV off then on brings it back, but I usually lose it when switching from SD to HD again. Again, this does not happen with component, which has louder sound! Go figure. If SD looks good with Component, then I'll switch.

Thanks for the definition! I don't think I have a problem going from HD to SD. Just a sound outage when I initially turn my STB and tv on, which is fixed by switching inputs or restarting the tv.

I've had the set for a week now, still a couple of weeks away from getting an ISF calibration.

Movement of objects in 3D as you move across the room: I first saw this on last fall's Home Theater cruise that had a $140,000 projector using active shutter glasses. This is the way 3D is supposed to work according to the industry experts, regardless of the technology.

Ghosting: I saw a little bit on far away objects on Chesney's 3D concert BD. That's about it.

Tru Motion and local dimming. It would be really nice if they were separate settings for all of the input modes. I like Tru Motion when watching live video but prefer it off in the Cinema mode. Getting to that menu is a pain, as I find the directional cursor control buttons on the remote harder to hit than any other remote I've ever used.

Those are minor issues, coming from someone that has been watching a Pioneer Kuro for the past 3 years.

I have had mine out of the box for about a hour now. And i must say with a few minor tweaks to a ISF mode i am very impressed with the picture. Very deep blacks. Of course i have to sit down tonight an play around. I have mine on the desk on the stand currently. As i am waiting for my GF to get home so she can help me hang it on my wall mount. Was gonna attempt it myself. But didn't want to chance it mine locks in its pretty tricky. I have a few questions for the users on this thread.

What do you guys have your local dimming set to? I have mine on medium currently. Once i get it on the wall i can play around with it more.

Also i was surprised it came with a free network dongle. I was gonna keep the free 3D blu ray player being it had the wifi. But i guess i can sell it being i have a PS3 and it comes with the dongle.

But will the dongle go into the normal USB slot on the side? Or does it have to go in the back? I ask this because in that case i would not be able to use it being i have a low profile wall mount.

I cant wait to try the 3D out tonight. I tried some basketball and baseball games i had on my DVR and Blade 2 to test the blacks. And wowzer i'm loving it so far. I know i am in the honeymoon stage but so far so good. I had a last years model LG PK750 Infinia plasma. And i honestly think this sets picture so far smokes it! Besides the plasma had a 60" screen lol.

PS: I am actually getting a kick out of the Magic Wand remote. At first i thought it would be super cheesy. Which it still is, however i can see it coming in handy. Instead of clicking through all the menus for changing settings, changing inputs & opening apps. I see it coming in handy. Being i am one of those fast clickers where once i learn the menu layout. I try to go through the menus fast and the remote cannot keep up with me lol. It does get annoying from time to time. With the wand its much much easier to change a setting or get to a menu. Good for avoiding grip lock on your hand lol. Im sure its not for everyone, but if you are one of those super fast clickers like me you know what i mean lol.

Dongle goes into either of the two USB ports on the back side. Wired is faster, so my dongle is back in the box. I have a wall port and I bought a 5 port Ethernet switch for 15 bucks, so I plugged in the computer, the TV, the BR player and a WiFi Access Point for my laptop.

Yep, if I switch ports, I can get sound back too. Like I posted, I may go to component if it starts to bother me and if component gives me a good SD picture. Frakkin Comcast!

Ahh i see. The TV is in the same room as my router, if that would make any difference. I have my PS3 hardwired, but would have to run another ethernet for the TV, figures. I am the type that does not like any wires visible lol, i hate wires! I will have to give it a shot with the dongle and see if its fast enough for my needs. I am just a occasional Vudu user & would just mess with the apps to pass time, maybe check the weather lol. It's amazing they charge $80 bucks for the dongle & you can only use the one that is made for LG & not a D-link and such.

The wireless dongle just might have to pay a visit to Mr. Ebay lol. I prob wont even open it. I am also debating on weather keeping the LG 3D blu ray player, being i have a PS3. It does have the wifi but the same apps as the TV has. Kinda pointless to keep when my PS3 already plays 3D blu rays. And by the time id use it for another room something better would prob be out lol.

Hey all! First time posting and had a question.

I am really torn right now. I just bought a Samsung 6500 not 4 days ago. I have been unhappy with the black level and the "so called flashlight effect." I am also unhappy to learn that it will not output 5.1 audio via Optical.

I am also A HUGE gamer. This TV got horrible marks in regards to input lag and delay making gaming almost unplayable.

So, this LG is on my radar. I love the price point, the free glasses and Blu Ray that Best Buy is offering right now. But is it worth it? Is LG really coming up in the market as a leader in display technology?

I would consider myself a noob and pretty much everyone here is more educated on this subject than I.

So, return the Samsung or not return? That is the question.

Question for you guys who wall mounted yours. I already have a bracket on the wall. My 60" Sharp i used screws that are a little long for the mount holes to mount the rails. Did you guys use the screws that came already screwed into the back of the TV? I ask this because they seem shallow. I would have to pile up the washers to use the screws i used with my other TV. But i always thought the screws that came with the TV on the back is the ones that fit perfect.

Although my sharp didn't come with any. I will look over the manual to see if there is any info in there. I seen it said use a M6. But the length is what i need to know.
Hey everybody I just joined up, these forums have been a great resource for me on prior purchases. I just picked up the 47LW5600 yesterday at BB have not had a chance to try gaming yet is there any real bad lag issues that can't be corrected with out some tweaking. That is all that has me concerned because Avatar on HBO 3D on demand was awesome and normal
2D is great in HD based on what I've watched so far.

I used the ones that were in the tv and they worked fine. Cant be too long or they will break into the screen. The manual was woefully unhelpful with this i know.

Is HDMI 1.4 needed for the 3D feature of this? As this is passive and not active im just wondering if 1.4 is still needed or 1.3a will work just as fine?

Only if you plan on connecting the set through a receiver from your sources. If you direct connect (as I do -- I don't have a 1.4 receiver), it should work fine .

Now using the settings I posted above, I am very satisfied with this set in the day time, at night and playing video games on all my systems. I now have zero complaints about the tv. So do not worry. The tv is great! You will love it unless you are just super picky and look for things to be wrong.

I used your settings when I set up the TV and have not tried gaming yet on PS3 or Xbox 360 but based on what you've said the lag issues are alot better than what you first encountered I will repost tomorrow after I give Black Ops a go tonight thanks for the settings.

With the tv up and running, I put it through its paces to see how it looked with pictures from different sources (Note I am a "light on" while I watch TV person as I find too much strain on my eyes with complete dark):

1. Satellite TV: Picture was great both in the day (large window to its left) and night. The picture had tons of pop and didn't present any significant blurring. I am an avid sports fan so watched the Masters, NHL game on NBC, and NBA on ABC yesterday and tv presented each of them with great color and no blurring was seen. Was shocked by how real the picture was especially the greens in Augusta. I also decided to watch the Masters in 3d, and i did not notice a drop in resolution from the HD feed to the 3d Feed. I know it has been written about the halving of resolution but I couldn't see it. It was an enjoyable 3D experience and felt as if I was there on some of the greens.

2. PS3: I played NBA2K11 as it is my favorite game that I have. I notice, no lag or blurring when I played. However, I wasn't online so I can't comment on that. I can say the 3D effect was very pronounced and comfortable. Again, the game looked the same from a resolution perspective and was fun to play.

3. 2D-3D: Played with this a little, but can say it does create a good effect with sports games but as expected its not great for every camera shot. However, it does add a nice element for those people wanting to change their viewing of TV. Nice add on.

4. I didn't have a 3D movie so I couldn't test its effect but blu-ray looked great with the dark knight. color tones were real and the film looked fantastic.

5. Audio: I am set up on a Harmon AVR354 so I don't plan to use the TV's speakers.

Overall, I did a lot of research online and read too many articles about TVs to confuse me more about my decision. I weighed plasma versus LED, 120 Versus 240, active versus passive. The decision tree was:

Plasma V. LED: Wife is a energy Efficiency engineer so Plasma wasn't going to cut it plus our room is well lit on a regular basis so LED was the best option.

120 Versus 240: Read a few articles that suggested that 120 v 240 isn't visible to the human eye. I think CNET poled 3 experts and it was 2:1 on unable to see. So I went to the local store and watched lord of rings and notice that the 240 created smoothing effect that made Computer gen objects look transposed on the screen. really taking the illusion away and making it look fake. Another friend of mine turned his new tv down to 120 for watching sports; so I decide on the 120 hz model.

Active vs. Passive: was close to buying the C8000 63 Samsung but didn't like the weight or the "sputtering" in the active glasses. I wanted to future proof my TV a little with 3D but couldn't see why active was so great given its requirement for head position and flickering in the glasses. Saw the passive tv in a local shop and was impressed with the image quality and the lack of "crosstalk". So it made the option much more clearer for me.

I hope this helps someone.

Thank you for posting this review, I am in an eerily similar boat and this really has helped me decide on purchasing this set. I will be off to Fry's Electronic this weekend to purchase. This review was invaluable to me.

Well, my 55LW5600 came from Vanns today and.........Wow is it gorgeous! I only had a few minutes to mess around with it so far but man is it a beautiful picture. I can't wait to delve into all the features, settings, etc... I for one am impressed. The whole Smart TV is very intuitive and easy to get around. Worth every penny to me.

Thanks it does help, one question, would the 240hz set have any effect on 2d content? Whar does the 240hz add besides $500 to $600 bucks? And how were the viewing angles?

I have one shot at this with the Finance Committee (wife)

What are my options as far as being able to connect my PS3, LG 3D blu ray, & Direct TV DVR? I currently have a Sony 5.1 ht-ss370 surround system i bought a few months back. My previous TV i was using its HDMI repeater feature in the Sony system being i could not access the HDMI ports on the back of the TV because of the slim profile wall mount. So that came in handy. So i just had one HDMI going to the side of the TV, & than the rest of my sources going to the receiver.

Ihttp://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666077692

I do not think it has 3D pass through which sucks being this set is just about new. Funny when i bought it i remember saying ahh 3D i wont get it this year lol. It does have two optical inputs however. So would i have to run HDMI cables directly to for 3 devices? Or would running my sources via hdmi to the TV and then 1 optical cable to my receiver from the TV work? Ugh, its always something lol!I can't wait to explain to my GF i have to take the TV off the wall again and run more wires haha.

Is there any logical way to make my current "box" surround system work unitl i move and than upgrade to a much better custom built system so to speak.

Thanks.
PS: Anybody know what the super resolution does in the expert controls? Thats a new one ive never seen on my previous LG's.
If you want to wait to upgrade, buy a low cost 3D capable HDMI switch. Alternately, you can get a decent low priced entry level 5.1 Yamaha that supports 3D and HD audio for under $200.

Monoprice has a few switches that will work for under $50 and you can get one with toslink out to connect your sound system.

4x1 HDMI 1.3b Certified Switch w/ CEC Engine (FULL 1080p HD) w/ 3D support.

4X1 HDMI 1.3b Certified Switcher w/ Toslink + Digital Coaxial Port (Rev.2) w/ 3D support.

YAMAHA 5.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver RX-V367

Thanks veggas. Yea i was throwing around the idea of a low cost 3D supported receiver. As for that switch. This would let me utilize the 3D and my surround sound. I am just trying to figure out in my head how it all goes together. Its a little early for me lol.
Ill give it a shot. So with the switcher, one HDMI would go to the TV. And then i would connect my Sony receiver to the switcher along with my PS3, Direct TV & LG blu ray. So the switcher would turn my receiver into a 1.4 hdmi spec so to speak? And then instead of doing the changing inputs on my receiver like i do now. I would use the HDMI switcher remote instead. Is this correct, great just what i need another remote!!!!! Its about time to get a Logitech lol.
