Official Panasonic 2011 TC-PxxST30 Thread [No Price Talk] - Page 51

Another Update:

ST30 #2

This tv is going back as well. I am going to give it a week or two this time, and see if the issues get better, but THIS is what's going on now.

When the screen transitions from a dark scene to the light scene, the light and color of the lighter scene fluctuates. It gets darker. If the difference between light/dark is great, I can see three different degrees of fluctuation (the screen will get slightly darker, then darker, then darker) - it only takes a few seconds but it VERY distracting.

Is this floating blacks? I have noticed it on Blu-Rays and streaming Netflix.

Did you turn CATS off? Also did you use Custom mode to take all of the enhancement things off like brighten up dark scenes?

Ugh. And apparently it's more apparent on the GT30 according to posts on HDJ.

The Samsungs have light blacks to begin with, and they fluctuate their blacks/brightness as well...why the hell can't a company make a competent TV for cripes sake?!

However, I have a new strange issue - two actually.

#1 There is a dead pixel on green slides, but none on any of the other colors.
#2 The green slides show a light blob of discoloration in the middle of the screen. The other colors are uniform.

Anyone know what's going on and how serious this is?

My last st30 had a dead pixel, and my current st30 has a defective pixel like yours.

Your pixel is dead on green slides because the green sub-pixel is most likely dead.

My defective pixel has a dead red sub pixel. this leads to normal blue, normal green, black on red, and light blue on white.

Im guessing yours has normal red, normal blue, black on green, and purple on white.

My last st30 had a totally dead pixel.

Panasonic considers a certain number of defective pixels to be within normal spec.

Unfortunately, as buyers, such things are always upsetting and we dont usually feel the same way they do. Fortunately, a single defective pixel is nearly impossible to spot in normal viewing from a normal viewing distance, even if youre looking for it.

My last st30 had uniformity issues in the form of blobs. This one does not, but it does have mild verticle banding. Your blobs may get better as the panel ages. See if you notice it in normal viewing. I would guess it doesnt show up. My verticle banding only shows up on color slides, so did the blobs on the last set for the most part.

I don't know what to say about the fluctuating brightness other than that was already covered in this thread.

MASKOAA .. was the last guys fluctuating problem resolved?

If you can resolve the fluctuation problem, then I would think carefully about swapping the set out. If you cant resolve that issue, send it back for sure.

I have not noticed this on my set. I'll look for it more carefully from now on and get back to you guys with my report. If you can, post some specific scene times from movies so I could compare plz. Well, tell me what movies first; and I'll let you know which ones I have access to so you can post specific scenes for those movies.

I can't find D-Nices' settings within these 1,500+ posts. I've tried searching, can someone point me in the right direction?

They are NOT on this forum and there are instructions not to post them here. Google D-Nice calibration st30 and you will find them.

Also check out the review/impressions video posted by davidjschenk under "official st30 review and report" some good discussion of the quality and differences between st30 and gt30 found it fairly informative of its highlights/flaws

Got one of these on Monday. I am in love with it. I am coming from a 5 year old 32" Sharp Aquos LCD and man, what a difference. The black levels on that old set could light up a large room.

Thanks to all the posters in this thread who weighed in with advice, knowledge, or just anecdotal experience. To someone trying to piece the puzzle together, it is all helpful and useful.

O rly?

Well, it will probably take them years to implement that kind of policy, if they can do it at all. The importance here being that plasma's days are numbered either way, so are led's. Oled tech will trump everything pq wise; and according to LG, oled tech pricing will be comparable to current lcd/led in 5 years.

It's the future.

Ever heard of SED? Might want to look it up before you whistle away about OLED... I'll believe it when I see it.

I have now

Oled is further along in development i think. Its already being implemented in the soon to be released new sony portable gaming device.

I just spent like 2 minutes reading about sed tech, so my opinions do not carry much weight on the subject, but oled still looks to be a superior tech.

I'll read more about it tonight.

edit:

yipes! oled life span is a big disadvantage currently.

Yes. Everything is turned off.

Then it sounds like a defective TV. You shouldnt be experiencing the issues you stated.

Got my (intact!) 42" ST30 from Best Buy today. Running the slides now. The only defect mentioned in this thread that I've noticed is the off-center picture (about a quarter of an inch on the left, uniform on other sides).

You manage to get an adequately centered screen on your second try, Spanky?

negative. its slightly better i think, but still very off center. quarter of an inch sounds about right.

can you tell me some movie scenes this occurs in. something that reliably displays this problem everytime you view it. I want to check my tv and see if I notice anything. So far I would say your tv sounds messed up, either that or you have a super human eye for changes in light output

How could the Panasonic ST30 be power hungry do they not have Energy Star 4 certification? Wouldn't this make them more energy efficient? Well I guess if this is true means more plasmas for the Great White North.

maybe some of you guys are just really picky, but you're scaring me a bit. a lot of returns and complaints, and not to offend anyone, they mostly sound like they stem from totally unrealistic expectations. It's just a tv.

In large part, you are correct. People do have unrealistic expectations sometimes, I have been guilty of that myself. After going through 2x leds and 4x plasmas, I realize something; perfect panels are the exception, not the rule. All six of my hdtv purchases this year have all been flawed panels.

For the most part, minor imperfections people have issues with are not things that affect normal viewing. Stray dead pixels, mild uniformity issues, and the like can't usually be spotted during normal viewing.

All 4 of the panny plasmas I've owned have all had a light verticle band about 2 inches from the right end. On my current one it is more pronounced than the previous three, and the band does occasionally show up in normal viewing. I also have a single defective pixel, but that does not show up in normal viewing. My picture is also quite off center. Despite these flaws I have learned to love my tv. Sometimes you just have to learn to accept a certain amount of imperfection in these things. Once you do, once you let it go, you will be rewarded with a certain peace of mind. I have learned the hard way that life is too short too worry about every little flaw in a tv panel. If you are truly unhappy, and can not see yourself eventually being at peace with your tv's flaws, then by all means take the road I did and swap it out. Just be warned, if you choose to get your panasonic plasma replaced, the replacement is very likely to have similar, same, or all new defects of its own.

Don't worry about it man, every thiread on this forum is full of complaints. People don't generally log on and create an account to praise their TV b/c there to busy enjoying it.

could you use his settings without breaking in the tv for 100 hours with those slides??? 100 hours is a long time to wait to use your new tv.
