Might want to try over at the HDJ forum in the 2011 Panasonic Settings/Issues Thread, first post (sorry, not only couldn't I put the link in here, but I couldn't even put the name of the Forum!). If you need more info, please PM me.

Best,
Greg

^They treat it like a curse word, so the link doesn't work. Search for highdefjunkys but with an "ies" at the end.

I have Apple TV2 that does passthrough DTS and AC3 to yamaha receiver through optical cable and it works great. but my 65ST30 outputs static noise, through HDMI.

Does 65ST30 support DTS or AC3 passthrough?

The smaller models ran some ridiculous incentives. They probably sold a LOT more than usual and stock went low, plus amazon seemed to pump up the prices before lowering them for a sale. That's what I saw as I was watching the 65ST30 and GT30.

So my question is, do the ST, GT and VT all have the same panels? And what are the differences?

I actually like the the look of the ST and if it's the same panel and the differences are marginal like that of the new Sammy range then a new 60" ST it will be for me! I don't want to have to go to 65" for the GT which is too big and the 55" is too small.

We don't even have the VT's in Australia yet, and that which we have of the ST and GT is quite limited still.

The pro reviews I read basically made it look like the picture quality is a toss up between the ST and GT30. The startling differences I saw were the bezel and THX mode.

The ST30 is homely and plain, but that's really only a big deal when you're in best buy comparing it to the beautiful new Samsung LED's.

Got my replacement 65ST30 today, Homedirect took the cracked one back. This one looks fine. Runnin' the slides now...can't wait to get through the first 100.

Thanks for the replies! Which TV's did you guys own prior to an ST30?

DO you know how the STs compare to Panasonic models from 2 or so years ago? I'm really happy with the PQ from my thpz46800a, I really can't fault it at all, it's just too small. I'm not sure what the US equivalent was though... I think it's the 2008 or 2009 model. They were named the Kuro Killers, it's this model:

http://www.comparison.com.au/televis...ic/TH-46PZ800A

I really am hoping that this years STs perform at least as well as it, if so I'll disregard Samsung all together.

The VT30 tops both in black levels and overall picture quality, though I can't really discuss the differences since I don't know much about it.

I chose the ST30 because it provides the greatest picture with the least effort (no need to go into service menu), and was the best value for me. I also like the design of the cabinet.

I might consider a GT or maybe even a VT if they came in 60" - Still can't figure out why they went with no 60" for the GT and the VT

I never have used the preset modes anyway so that's not a concern, and the bezel doesn't really concern me to be honest! It's what's in between the bezel that counts!

Wow I have a 42 inch ST30 and thought I would try the 47 LG LW5600 edge lit LCD-LED. The LG went straight back. Made me appreciate the plasma tech even more. The colors were deeper and the blacks were darker on the ST30. However I did enjoy the passive 3d while it lasted. Having both side by side the passive showed way more depth in the same content. Wonder why that is? Maybe because it was bigger than the St30 but it definitley had more depth. The resolution drop was noticeable with both side by side but not as big a deal as everyone makes it seem. Does anybody know when the new Panasonic 3d glasses come out? Im not very happy with the 2nd gen and havent heard any info on new ones?

ordered the 60st30 and getting it next week. this is my first plasma and i am confused about break-in.

i found dnice thread on junkies forum. please tell me if i got this right.

when i first get the tv, i will use settings on post #1 of that thread. then download evangelo2s photo slides on sd card (by clicking on red link on post #1?). then put the sd card in slot on tv and then play slides for 100 hours on those settings?

when done with that, then i change settings to those on post #2 of that thread?

That's exactly what I'm doing...

Using the SD card on the ST30 is super easy. So, I run slides during the day, and watch tv whenever I like on "zoom". I have brightness and contrast down. Gonna use dnice settings next week.

Break in was not "required" from what I read.

"DO you know how the STs compare to Panasonic models from 2 or so years ago? I'm really happy with the PQ from my thpz46800a, I really can't fault it at all, it's just too small."
I have had an ISF calibrated Panasonic 65PZ850U that continues to look great in my HT since March of 2009 and bought the 42ST30 at the end of April and am very pleased with how similar the PQ is on both displays. Minimum of tweaking and won't be getting the ST30 calibrated for just that reason. It just looks very, very good with anything I watch: Roku, TW cable or blu-ray. The new panels Panasonic is using seem to really do the job. Now the fact that it is smaller may contribute to that but whenever I don't feel like turning everything on downstairs the ST30 is more than an adequate replacement.

I finally put my st30 in my room today hooked up the cablebox and watched some tv.the pq is really awesome. i cant get over how big this tv is lol 50 inch and iam watching
it from like 6 feet or a little more. right now iam useing vivid mode with contrast at 70and color and brigthness at 50. so after over 200 hours of slides and some ble raysnow i can watch tv. one more thing something wried i was in the settings and i disabled
pixal shifting this seems to make the pq nicer but when i ran the scrole barin the upper right hand corner near the edge it seems i have a dead pixel? i only see it when i run the bar, not with slides or moives so is it a dead pixal

i had the same problem, its not a dead pixel. Mine was in the upper left hand corner only when i ran the scrolling bar. It actually went away. But other people have confirmed this is not a dead pixel

Vivid is a garbage setting, don't use it unless you want the most inaccurate picture possible. Use Custom or Cinema. Not using pixel orbiter makes no sense either. Vivid with no pixel orbiter is a disaster waiting to happen.
I kept reading about orbiter setting but I have no idea where it is and what it is for. can someone explain ?

I am away from the TV right now so I forget how to access it, but it basically shifts the whole image by a pixel or two in various directions every minute or so to help prevent burn-in. After your panel has reached 100 hours it doesn't have to be on, and even before the 100 hours it won't be horrible to have it off since panels have come a long way since a few years ago...
does anyone know why when my 65gt30 when set to full and aspect hd size set to 2, i get a 1/8 inch gap from the bezel and the picture on the left side of the screen?? This happens with any format, blu ray, dvd, directv all through hdmi. Even with pixel orbiter off it still doesnt fill up the whole screen
post #3439 of 8347
I just checked and orbital is enabled by default. I did not even notice any effect that this pixel shifting does.
So I have come around and really love the TV. Problem is the floating brightness issue is scaring me (I've seen some, but not tons), and I want bigger.

Considering how I've bastardized the accurate color settings to this point, I might be OK with a plasma but lesser panel. I really dig the tones and motion now. That Costco S34 variant is only 1300 for a 60!
Also thinking about LG. I'd go Samsung but they have their own brightness issues.

Same here. I have no problem leaving it on and if it might help then I'll go for it.

Thanks for that mate, I'm 100% certain now that I'll wait for the 60" ST instead of going for a new Sammy..

So how bad is the floating brightness realistically? Is it reduced when the settings are modified?
Anyone seen fluctuating brightness issue on st30s? Got my st30 in 6/29. Ran d-nice's prep for 200 hrs and now running his settings. Pic is great but saw fbr twice last nite when I WASN'T looking for it.
It was on netflix - 2 times
1) the netflix menu itself - it went darker/lighter red.
2) another scene in a movie with actors with lots of white clothes - I whites fluctuating-similar to a video posted on youtube for gt30.
Do you guys think its netflix (due to wireless setup/speeds) or has someone else exp. this as well?
I've only run one dvd by now MI-3 and that had more dark scenes than bright. My HD DVR arrives next week. Will Play more blu-rays this weekend.
Too hard to tell on any sources other than blu-ray. I wouldn't go by Netflix/cable/etc. I've noticed it on Chopped on the Food Network, but it could have been a weird signal. I haven't noticed it any other time.
If I switch from a dark scene to my Fios guide, it happens every time. There of course, I don't care, but it can be rather distracting during other things.
any good stands out there for the 60st30? im trying to keep it under $200 and i dont want to put the tv on the wall. prefferably something where the plasma will be as close to the wall as possible (rear of the stand).

also, i believe i have older 1.2 hdmi cables. i will be using blue player, dvd upconverter and direct tv hd dvr. do i need more newer hdmi cables?
Here's a strange one. I have my Comcast DCX3400 DVR plugged into my 50ST30's HDMI 1 and the Blu-ray player via my AVR into HDMI 2. Sometime last week when watching some On Demand 3D movies I saw on dark screens, especially credits, vertical bars alternating dark and light across the entire screen:
We have another 3400 DVR in the bedroom so I plugged it into the Panny's HDMI 2 port and saw no problems. My assumption was that the first DVR had an issue and I swapped it for another one (and went from 320 to 500 GB in the process). Got it home, hooked it up to HDMI 1 and Bam, the same bars appeared. Moved it to HDMI 2 and no bars. Tried a 3D blu-ray on both ports and there was no problem. The cables are all from Monoprice and compatible with 3D transmission. For the time being I've swapped the ports for the DVR and Blu-ray player to deal with this issue. BTW, the bars only appear on 3D source material. I'm considering calling Panasonic this week since I don't want to feel as though I'm locked into these HDMI port assignments. What does everyone think?

Call Panasonic and have them figure it out.
I'm about to get an ST30, and want to get a Blu-Ray player as well. I mostly want to watch discs, but want to keep the option open for streaming Netflix, Facebook, etc. I'm looking at getting a Panasonic 110/210 player; is there any reason to pay more for the built-in WiFi 210, since the ST30 already has a decent suite of internet apps? Bearing in mind I don't have definite plans to make use of the apps--I just don't want to buy a 110 and then regret not getting the WiFi-enabled 210 later (the 110 plus the cost of an adapter is more than the 210). Is the 210 better at streaming Netflix than the ST30 itself?
I can't comment on the video quality but if you stream from the tv's aps you will have limited audio from the optical out, like stereo, dolby4.0. If you stream from the BD player to your AVR, you have one right, then you will have more sound options like 5.1 through hdmi to the AVR. Not sure about the Audio Return Channel on HDMI 1 but that may have better audio out. Your AVR/HT1B will have to be compatible for that to work.
