So drab, lifeless, dim, just hideous looking. I think plasmas get a bad reputation because more people care about the reference settings, and just leave them on those settings for TV viewing in the day time. So when friends come over during the day and watch sports, they all look at it and go "Holy crap Plasmas suck HUGE TIME!!!)

Last night watching the latest Potter flick, those settings look nice, but absolutely under no condition are they even 1% acceptable for afternoon football.

Now on to my question: Should 3:2 pulldown be set onto the "on" position or "auto". I've read some Panny's need this set to the "on" position for it to pass the test correctly.

Secondly, the 3:2 pulldown affects, 720p, 1080i/60, and 1080p/24, so since those are the only 3 resolutions my TV will ever see, 3:2 should always be activated anyway, so why not just set it to "on".

I also find d'nice's settings too dim for sports. I think it looks great for blu ray but when it comes to sports all the games look like their playing in overcast weather. So I tinkered around with the settings and decided to keep everything the same except change the "panel brightness" from low to mid.

Hope this helps!

Doorbell rang last night at 8:00. My wife and I were wondering who the heck would be at our door at that time on a Sunday night. Turns out to be the delivery company with our new Panny set! The driver obviously had no clue about the pre-August issues, so I scoured over the box until I could find the build date and sure enough...August 2011 build (ME-1270 I believe). I offered the guy a few gatorades in delight and proceeded to tear open the box down in the basement!

Slides have been running since last night, with Friday morning being my target time to set this bad boy up with D-Nice's settings.

just received my 2nd 60st30, returned the 1st because of the pink tint, this one is also a may build as the 1st was, dang it. will report back on the pink and green blob issue after i get it up and running.

edit- well it also has the pink and green issue maybe not as bad... for those who are looking for it put the panel brightness on low, as MID doesnt show it hardly at all but on low it is obvious.

if it doesnt get any worse i may keep it, i just dont know... i also heard that the 2012;s are going to be special, but i havent heard why, waiting for a reply on that.

I started up uncharted last night and noticed while it was loading (black screen) I could see burn in from the previous warning message. It did go away but now i am really thinking of taking it back. This and the loud buzzing I might wait for the 2012. Anyone else have anymore insight on this something special?

You didn't see burn in, you saw temporary "image retention". That's normal, especially a new plasma. Once the panel gets a little aging, it will happen nil to none. As far as buzzing, all plasmas do to some extent. Some are quiet, some are moderate and some are loud. How you characterize yours would depend on your hearing and sensitivity to it. You can wait until 2015 and if you buy a Plasma, it will probably buzz.

Totally normal as the above poster noted. In younger plasmas, it might stay there a little bit, but shouldnt be there a long time. Did you break it in with slides?? I do a LOT of gaming on my ST, with 0 issues so far. I play a lot of CoD MW3, Battlefield 3, and Forza, with no IR or burn-in. I usually play for about 0.5-3 hours, and have not had any issues. I ran slides for about 3 days before using the set and I think it helped but will never know. Its a great set for gaming!

Need some help/advice...

Just got my ST30 last night and started the slide process not soon after. Everything has been great, until 15 minutes ago...

It's literally like half the screen died!?!?!? In some areas there are spackles of color, but other than that nothing!

Has anyone experienced this?

Had a timing snafu Saturday night as spouse forgot to buy theatre tickets for friend coming from out of town. What to do?! After showing her our iDVD video of our new (first!) granddaughter from Hawaii - (Viera slide show with frames is neat as well).

I asked if we wanted to watch my early Xmas present, James Bond on Bluray. No real interest, until I popped From Russia with Love in. We then sat enthralled for the whole show. The skin tone, textures and filmlike quality was stunning. Watching, what I consider the BEST Bond movie, in such a great transfer was a real joy. All on D'Nice settings.

The sets of Mad Men and PanAm have nothing on the real deal. Bond's Savrille Row suits and the women's classic silk dresses just popped class. The street scenes in Istanbul and Venice were like going back in a splendid time machine. That is why plasma and these panels rock!

I need some help deciding whether or not to keep this set.

I picked up the 60" 3 days ago (April build). I went the open box route because this is now a deleted item at BB and no one within 100 miles had one. I brought it home and started tinkering with the picture (Att-Uverse Motorola VIP1225). I applied the d-nice settings and these were way to dim and warm in my option. I adjusted to mid panel brightness and normal color range. This seemed to add some brightness and some of the "pop" I was looking for. The issues I'm still having are:
  • skin tones are off (I messed around with photo mode, but could get the washed out look to go away)
  • reds seem too hot at times
  • pure white screens (at the end of a lot of commercials) look very dim and grayish
  • the overall brightness and pop are not what I was hoping for.
The odd thing is, if I switch over to ps3 (blu-ray or games with the same settings), I don't really notice any of these things. The panel seems on the dim end, but much more acceptable. If that was all I used this for, I would be pretty happy. With that said, unless someone has a magical cure for these issues, here's what I need help with.
  • For the $, in terms of pure PQ is there anything better? This is somewhat rhetorical, because if there was you'd all have it, right?
  • Is the GT worthy of the $500 increase or will I experience the same issues. Honestly, the price is negligible really since it comes with the 3D glasses/kit. I'm more concerned with the PQ.
  • Assuming that I can live without 3D, would I be happier with LED? I think the only one that was 60" and in my price range was the sharp LC60LE831U.

Just updating you guys...

72 hours of slides ran, 28 to go! Still no buzzing, blobs, damage, nothing! And I just got a call two minutes ago from the tech that's going to replace my A Board. Panasonic has it in stock, and he just ordered it. He's coming over Friday between 3-5pm to swap it! CAN'T WAIT!!

Lucky! Just got off the phone with Panny about my TV dying. Have to wait 2 days for them to send me shipping slip, then have to send TV back to them. Nothing like buying a new TV, waiting a week to get it, and then having it die on you in less than a day! Now I've got to wait another 3-4 weeks before I'll see another one (and there's no guarantee I'll get a post August build either)!

Are you within 30 days of purchase? I would deal with the seller (Amazon, Best Buy, whoever) before contacting Panasonic if it's within 30 days. They can just swap it out for you...

So Pilot should be delivering my 55ST30 direct from Panasonic within the next few hours. Since this is my first plasma, I just wanted to get a rundown on the stuff I need to be aware of to look for once it's unboxed and before they leave. Besides making sure that there are no scratches on the screen, no broken parts on the screen/on the rest of the TV and no loud buzzing once turned on, is there anything else I'm missing? I just want to have all of this stuff down before it gets here...thanks!

Bought it directly from Panny when they had those insane deals on T-day.

Bought mine from Amazon, I'm still trying to find a decent extended warranty service.

I've read the fine print on Square Trade, no thanks.

Anyone out there with a extended warranty they are happy with? I'll go the long buck if I have to, it just has to be fair and reliable.

What do you people think about Panasonic's extended warranty?

Any input would be appreciated!

thanks.

doesn't it say on the plasma Concierge flyer in the box, that they will provide you a loaner tv, while the other one is getting repaired/replaced. You should at least get something while you wait for a working tv.

Where did you buy it from? My 60ST30 was purchased from Amazon, and by the time CEVA delivered it, the box was freezing. I inspected the box to make sure there were no punctures, massive crunches, etc... It looked fine, so I had them leave it on the living room floor on some towels. I let it acclimate to the inside temperature for nearly 8 hours before opening it and turning it on.

But yeah, there are obvious things to check for if you want to... scratches, dents, cracks, buzzing when powered on, blobs, etc... But I just don't recommend stressing over these things and turning your TV on if it's freezing cold. As the inside warms up, condensation builds up, and that can lead to disaster.

About 30 hrs into the slides on a 46 may build, and I am starting to see a very very faint green blob bottom center, and a greenish line down the middle, only on the grey and white slides. You really have to look for it. Dont think it was there at first or I didnt notice it. Anyways, everything else seems perfect. TV doesnt make any noise, all the other slides look solid, and during normal content viewing, I see no green blobs or issues.
Anyone know if these blobs get worse, or should I just stick with it, I wouldn't want to replace the tv and get somethign with even more issues.

Just got my 55" from Amazon via CEVA. It is an October build with no issues (MG1276). I actually purchased it on November 23 and it took this long to get here, but now I am quite happy!

Running the slides now.

when mine was delivered from Amazon, the delivery guys were required to turn it on right there, and I had to initial a receipt/checklist that everything was working ok.
Power on
Video
Sound
No damage.
before they could leave the set there.

I'd go with the Panny extended warranty. I think a new US Panny buyer would get a deal. In Canada $165? for 2 more years seems to be a good deal. That is what I got back with tax on a price match after the ST30 50 inch went on sale to 854 from my $999.

They didn't offer anything. Has anyone else had luck asking for one? And yeah, I'm looking at that sheet now, and it clearly states you get a complimentary loaner.

So when my new tv arrives tomorrow do I need to wait until it "warms up" before powering on and inspecting for blob issues, etc or can I do that right away but wait to start up slides (just don't want to damage anything by the abrupt temperature change - live in WI). Thanks.

I bought it directly from Panasonic.

True, I remember that from back in my video store rental days during the VHS times.

I can't decide if I want to roll the dice on returning a dirt cheap (but really nice) 60" Sharp edge-lit LED I got on BF for a Panny 60ST30. My Sharp is beautiful but has noticeable light bleed which can be distracting at times & is pretty much unavoidable with Edge-lit LEDs.

The Panny's brightness fluctuations don't worry me as they have fixes. The buzzing (have read some that didn't buzz initially but are starting too after break-in), green blobs/lines, bulkier bezel/thickness are what have me wondering if it's worth the gamble. I would do the exchange via Amazon, hmmmmm.

I wish there was an actual resource of thousands of owners where I could see exactly what % these problems I mentioned above were happening. Scroling through this thread, it can go 50/50 with some saying they have perfect panels and other going through numerous exchanges.

Hmmmm, my TV was the last to be unloaded from the truck (I live in VA). While it wasn't WI cold, at night it did get pretty low in temp. The TV when I took it out of the box was very cold, but I went ahead and started the slides anyways. I wonder if this caused the issue I'm having (pictures from last page).

Yeah, I think after I power on to ensure it works and has video/audio, I will let it sit overnight to acclimate to the temperature inside.
