I'm a brand new plasma owner--just picked up the 60" ST30 from Fry's. I'm upgrading from a Mits 65" DLP. I've read bits and pieces about 100 hours of prep, running slides, etc before using.

Is there a link to a set explanation of how to run the slides and prep my TV? I can't seem to find one.

Thanks!

You only need to run "the slides" if you plan on using the d-nice calibration settings. Beyond that just don't let any static images stay on the screen too long during the first 100 hours. Don't bother running the slides unless that's the absolute only thing you do for the first 100 hrs. Beyond that, you can plug the settings in (which are not on this forum) and use a calibration disc (spears and munsil or otherwise) and enjoy right away. Congrats on coming over to the good side.

I've been running with D-Nice's settings unmodified, mostly TV and movies with some hockey and football. But today watching the Winter classic and the Rose Bowl, I noticed the colors were off (Wisconsin is in white, right?). I changed the Color Temp Normal to correct... I'll have to try the other two.

yeah here are my settings so far. It might change after i try some more things, or it might not, either way, it looks AWESOME currently, so any improvements will only be minor. Keep in mind though that on my set in particular, I've noticed all along that there was a tad bit of greenish tint to everything. Not the green blob issue, just an overall green picture. D-Nices settings were an improvement over default, but it still wasn't quite right, and i could never get it how I wanted it by eyeballing.

Had a technician come and install the patch today on an SD card... very quick and easy install!

I just bought a ST30, how do you know if your board needs updating?
chikoo,

The larger sized ST30s at 60" and 65" have an average MLL of .004 according to D-Nice. This is nearly the same as the larger sized GT30 and VT30. Having owned a 65VT30 and 65ST30, I can say from experience in a dark room they appear about the same. The smaller sized ST30s do have higher MLLs. As a result, a lot of people are confused about this.

Total man crush on this new 50" ST30. However I have a coupl ebasic questions I couldnt find in my search.
  1. How to I determine manufacture date and if I need any firmware updates
  2. The only odd thing the TV does I cant figur eout is it seems to go back and forth between screen sizing, presumably based on the resolution its receiving. I set it to Native but its seems to be all over the place on non-HD input. For example on an SD channel or recording (from DVR) it will be full screen for show, then commercial widescreen with top and bottom black bars, then occassionally black bars all sides with reduced screen size.
  3. Any known must do tweaks/fixes

Not having a trianed eye I love the picture out of box but plan to try some of the picture settings down the road.

Anyone really wish they got a GT30 instead of an ST30?

As best I can tell the major functional differences are that the GT has more inputs, THX and a useless PC input. I'm pretty sure those are not worth the extra to me but I want to make sure I'm not missing something.

I see that the panels are the same. It looks like D-Nice's 2011 ST30/GT30/VT30 Reference Settings are a little more involved with the GT. Should I be concerned that the ST won't look as good after the 100 hour burn in and setting adjustment? I'm not lloking for reference quality - just a good every day picture.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I just turned on my new ST and noticed a very faint white perfect circle about 12 inches down and about 6 inches right of the top left corner. I'm only running the slides right now but can notice it faintly on some slides. Not sure if it will be an issue when running regular content or not.

Has anyone else had this issue?

ST30 vs D6500.....

Anyone have thoughts or experiences?

Question guys.....how does a warranty from Panasonic differs from the Amazon one?

Panasonic's Mfg Warr is for one year.
Panasonic will also offer to extend the Mfg Warranty - but on the Pan products we've purchased thus far their extension comes at a high price.

Amazon sells 3rd Party Extended Warranties that usu run 3 - 4 years.

If you purchase using certain Credit Cards, you gain a year's coverage on the basic Mfg Warr - something worth checking into.

Search around: there have been topics on Warranties in the past. Some people like the extended ones, others do not.

Note that Ext Warranties come with a fair number of "Out Clauses," and you should read them through prior to purchasing.

IF we were to buy an extended warr on a TV right now, would almost certainly do so through CostCo - their pricing is significantly lower than have seen elsewhere. (Must be purchased with 60-days of buying your set, but set does NOT have to be bought from CostCo.)

Last time I looked, the D6500 was still considerably more expensive than the ST30.

That, along with the reports of Catastrophic Screen Failure on a number of Samsung Plasmas, led us to purchase a 60" ST30.

(Spontaneously Cracking Screens undoubtedly occur in a tiny fraction of the Samsungs: but, again, the failure is CATASTROPHIC, and - from the reports read thus far - Samsung has been refusing Warranty Coverage.)

Alas, our ST30 has BOTH the Green Blob AND the Pink Tint flaws, so it looks like a poor choice, and may well end up sending it back (3 weeks to decide...).

Frankly, if the ST goes back (still have faint hopes that flaws will "self-correct"), may just sit out 2011 models altogether - or perhaps take a flyer on the LG 550 Plasma...

Actually only about 150 bucks separates them now. Currently I have a 55" ST30 in another room and am happy with the picture but exploring some additional options. In the stores the Samsung seems brighter. Also considering the the Panny (S30, GT30) and Sammy (D550, D7000) above and below these in their respective lineups.

Just opened my 65ST30. Serial starts with MH. Manufactured June 2011. Slides just started. 100 hours to go!

Can't seem to find this in the manual but I thought there was a way to do this on my 50ST30.

My son was catching up on some old Star Trek TV shows in Netflix and these are all in 4:3 SD format. Is there a setting that can stretch this to 16:9?

The format button does not work when in Netflix and the Aspect controls are greyed out when accessing the picture controls.

Am I stuck with what Netflix is sending me or am I missing a control somewhere that can change this?

Thanks....

If I perform the 100 hours of color slides and later find out that I'm getting fluctuating brightness, after the repair of the fluctuating brightness, do I have to perform the 100 hours of color slides again? Don't laugh, I'm not technically savvy. Thanks for any information.

Sat down again tonight with my new ST30. I wanted to re-emphasize how great it looks with the D-Nice settings after 100 hour burn-in and the mods to Color Temp, Panel Brightness, and HDMI. I also boosted the Brightness from 54 to 68 and dropped Color from 45 to 38. It's spectacular. Pops like crazy, blacks and black levels are great, and flesh tones are right on. Try it, you won't be sorry.

Thanks....

Accessed Netflix via Blu-Ray (BT-210) and was then able to stretch. Picture actually looked good.

Funny, I had not yet set-up the BTD210 to access Netflix and was surprised that it went right to my account. Surprise.. not my account. I guess the player was used. Interesting, since it was supposed to be brand new and looked unused when I opened the box....

Anyway, was able to deactivate the account and set-up my account.

I tried changing the password to something easy like ababababab didn't work. If I shut off the security and run and open network it gets through, but I obviously can't leave it like that. Anyone having this problem? Is it broken or a compatibility thing? tks

BTW. I'm a KURO owner and so far am impressed with the set for the price, using it as my bedroom set. Surprised the audio does pretty well.

The Panny wireless dongle works well for me. If you have the regular FIOS router, you are better off adding a wireless N router to it for your wireless access (and turning off the wireless on the Fios Actiontec router which is not wireless N). I am using the Rosewill RNX-N4PS from Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833166039 and the security setup works well, plus I have been able to stream movies from Amazon with no problem whatsoever. My router is a couple of rooms away
