Official Panasonic 2011 TC-PxxST30 Thread [No Price Talk] - Page 255

I recently purchased a 55st30 and when I attempt to adjust the aspect to size 2 it leaves black bars at top bottom and sides. Is this normal for a 1:1 ratio? I would think this would fill the screen but to do so I need to use size 1. I have reset everything else so is this the way the set displays the picture and if so do I have to use size 1 to fill the screen? I have searched here but come up empty. Any help would be appreciated.

Thats the pixel orbitor that moves the screen a couple of pixels every 5-10 minutes so burn in is less likely when theres static images on the screen.

Ok but I have disabled this and the bars are still there...this baffles me...why setup a tv like that? It makes no sense to me but I'm not the smartest kid in class.

What source are you using? Size 1 overscans by 10% (I think that's the %). Size 2 shows the whole thing. For me, since I use my receiver to connect all the sources, the TV is always set to input 1. I prefer the overscan on TV and DVD/BDs, etc. My HTPC had stuff cut off, so it set it to display a slightly smaller resolution. If I set the TV to size 2, I see black bars on my HTPC, but not on TV. On TV, size 1 is cropping slightly.

Have you watched any full-screen blu-rays? Watching cable/satellite in Size 2 can show black bars.
Ok I am watching cable and see the bars in size 2. I will try a blu-ray and see what happens there. Thanks for the responses, much appreciated.

I was a little confused as our Samsung d490 does not perform in this manner.

What's with the bars? I never see any bars in size 2 or 1:1 format. Why would there be if the source is 16:9? Are you seeing horizontal bars on regular cable HD broadcasts in 16:9? Hopefully, you are not viewing a movie in CinemaScope format, then of course you will get black bars. Also, make sure you have the TV aspect set to FULL.

It's the cable signal/source. Everything is fine.

My a650 Sammy DLP just lost the bulb for the 2nd time in as many months AND the ballast went this time too.

So I WAS trying to hold out for the rumored Apple iTV. But I had no choice.

This is my main viewing tv but not my game room tv (vt25). So I wanted good. But didn't need top end. I was leaning toward the st30 but bc of all the green blob issues I opted for the LG 5300 since it comes with a blu ray player (good value, not that I need it). Best Buy was out however. So I talked to the sales guy who was extremely knowledgable and respectful of my knowledge. He understood what I was looking for and suggested I grab their last 55st30 since he'd only seen one returned for the green blobs. Figured that I already have 5 pairs of panny glasses. Should be good.

Just got it set up and I am happy to report that the picture is phenomenal (knock on wood). No blobs as of now (build date Dec 2011). Blacks are very nice and inky. No buzz on whites like the vt. Colors look great in cinema with contrast and brightness at 50 for break in. the best way to describe them isn't "pop" but very rich and deep. I dig it.

For the vt25 is used slides for 150 hours. For this one since my kids "need" it now. I'm opting to run it straight aside from the pic settings adjustment. I've been an advocate of break in slides but I guess now I'll find out if it matters. If I does and I should have done it, I'll be fine bc I got the warranty as a safety net . Yeah, yeah, I like um aight? lol.

I feel the same way about my new 60ST30 I bought at Costco last Sat. I did do the slides, so I don't know how much it helped. I also read so much about the pink/green problems on these sets that I wasn't sure about this model. I did get the 90 day return if problems pop up but I hope I don't need to use it. It is a Nov. build and so far I am very happy with it. More importantly the wife is very happy with it. HWHL I got such a good price on it I don't want to return it and pay the price difference to get a ST50 model.

Just purchased my P50ST30. We've watched just a couple movies today, DVD and Blue Ray. So far, both dvd and blue ray discs show a notable red "painting of pixels that seem to originate in the lower right hand corner of the display. It varies in intensity from not visible to noticeable. I'm new to plasma viewing. Is this a normal phenomenom? First connections were composite, then we swithched to hdmi cable, but no difference.

Read one post above. No not normal.

Just got a new 55st30. It looks pretty big next to my older 42

I am using evangelo's slides and plan to break in for most of the week ~100+ hours. I set the picture to cinema and haven't adjusted anything else.

Can't wait to get everything (AVR, Speakers etc are still hooked to the old 42) hooked up to the new set and see how it looks!

Is there any way to adjust depth or pop out on these sets when viewing 3d , yesterday I picked up batman on ps3 & noticed it wasn't so great in 3d compared to my friends set up which he uses 3d nvidia vision , I know it will never be as good as computer but I am not experiencing what most people do when playing on ps3 . Also noticed my little cousin came by the other day , he's about 16 and had a better experience viewing 3d than me so it could be my eyes but also playing blu ray movies that are supposed to have pop out at certain scenes according to reviews , I don't get any of that when viewing blu ray movies on Playstation 3 . Thanks

Isn't the contrast meant to be set quite high for the break in period? Cinema mode doesn't sound right to me.

I followed this advice:
http://allhighdef.com/2011/01/05/gen...-in-procedure/

I am using VIVID setting now. Must have mis-read it the first time.

I just picked up an ST30 and have some questions...

I am planning on watching 3D MKVs through boxee and I noticed MKV only holds a stereoscopic resolution (have 1080p) image.

1. So, is this display capable of displaying 3d in "passive" mode? (Why wouldn't it be?)
1a. If yes, what's the details on that?
1b. If no, what happens if I bring in a 1/2 HD 3d signal? Can it handle left/right AND top/bottom 3d? Does it convert it to active 3d so I can only watch with my panny glasses?
2. Should I get the current generation 3d glasses or are the new ones going to be that much better?
3. Should I root this?
4. How much does it cost to have a board replaced?
5. Should I upgrade the firmware?

Thanks

I'll try and help as much as I can , this is a active 3d meaning it uses active glasses , not passive. As for glasses you should get the current ones but do not have to , some say they look better and some don't , I'll admit they are allot more comfortable to wear. The xpand's also perform well as a cheaper pair. Board is free to replace if your tv is still under warranty which is usually the 1st year unless you purchase a extension and yes you should update the firmware , it's easy free and panasonic puts the updates out for a reason , to improve on the tv and fix problems. It's easy and only requires 5 minutes of your time , if tv is hooked up to the Internet it's as simple as a few clicks on the remote. Best of luck

Just ordered my 42 from Amazon. Will be coming Thursday.

Will be breaking it in just like I did with my PZ80U. Then calibrate.

We can go into the SM right?

Robert

P.S. Already OOS.
this may be a stupid question.. but does the firmware updates increase the picture quality. I dont seem to have any issues right now so I am not sure I need to upgrade the firmware.
Yes you can go into the sm if you know how to ? It's posted I believe in the calibration thread. As for the firmware changing how your picture looks , I didn't notice a difference when I did but I am sure it cannot hurt to update , they put these updates out for a reason.

Thanks. Found the thread.

Another question. Does the USB/SD need to be formatted in Fat32 or will NTFS work for the break-in?

It needs Fat32 or lower I believe.
Thanks. I will just use both file systems if need be.

About a month ago I had the A board replaced on my 46st30. Like some others here, the board they sent didn't have the update and was of no help. I just got off the phone with the local repair tech who insisted that there was no update for fluctuating brightness for the 46st30. He called Panasonics engineers to make sure and said they told him that it was unfixable. Now I know others have had their 46st30's fixed but he seemed more offended when I told him of seeing others report their repair.
He's gonna call a well known Panasonic field tech in Virginia and double check with him before we continue. He said they would probably do a swap for a new set but if it's unfixable I see no reason for them to bother.
I love the set otherwise so this is a real letdown for me in regards to Panasonic customer service.

Can somebody with Playstation 3 turn it on and see if the sides of the screen are cut off on all sides or at all by about 1". I just noticed this and cannot figure out a way to fix it , I am also using Hdmi port 2 for ps3. Thanks

Actually I am now noticing this on all inputs , the sides of the screen are cut off a tiny drop with a black bar .
Are you using pixel orbiter with Size 2?
Yes I am , I have noticed a small black bar surrouding the entire screen on all sources.
That explains the black bar. Turn pixel orbiter off and it will disappear. Or use Size 1 to apply overscan, which will also remove the black bar.

The pixel orbiter is moving the entire screen in various directions, so using it with Size 2 will move a portion of the image off the screen, which will create a black bar on the opposite side.
I actually found a picture in this forum of what I think I am experiencing , but it may just be how the panasonic screen is , can somebody turn there tv on and confirm , I think it's just these screens but there is a small , very tiny about a half of a inch all around the screen black bar .
