I am playing with different settings to see if I can get the picture dialed in even better.

Picture is awesome and I can't wait to try 3D. Sports with the above settings looks great. I can't wait for the NCAA tournament.

Awesome! Your post proves that my 55ST30 was a bit of a lemon. I was using those settings, but they couldn't overcome the issues that I was having. So I'm very glad to read that your set is a keeper!

Thanks WayneNumm, you just jinxed my set.

Thanks Sunkist, very helpful. BTW, was that a special price on the PS3 glasses or is that still good today?

LOL, same here. No new baby, but run both Netflix and music on PS3 during the day. Wife has been a sport though and makes sure it is always on full screen content...

I am actually more freaked out by DNICE's recommended picture settings for the slides during break in than anything. Obviously I trust him and I am running the slides overnight per his instructions... But still, seems to be opposite of Panasonic's more conservative or gentle break in.....

I imagine that DNICE did his that way because he was trying to break it in faster.

Lol! But no, I don't think so. If you had the same issues that mine had, you'd know it right from the get-go. So I think you're good! Enjoy your set

Ah man.... I hadn't seen anything really from Panny about break in. I went all in on Dnice setting though. I am 64 hours in, on the slides. I am hoping to crank it up for some NCAA basketball Thursday night. ha

Can anyone tell me what HDMI output settings I should use on the Boxee for my ST30? Here's the options:

HDMI Output : RGB High, RGB Low, YUV 444, YUV 422
HDMI Pixel depth: 24 Bit, 30 Bit, 36 Bit

Thanks.

I don't think that they advertise or promote a break in procedure, but when i called them about my S30 and told them I was breaking it in using slides, the tech I spoke to recommended more gentle settings....

I went ahead with D-NICE's settings on my ST anyway, as I am sure he knows what he is doing....it just feels kind of like doing a big, nasty burnout in your brand new car as you leave the dealer lot, lol.

hahaha, I know what you mean. I have it off in the corner of the house just doing it's thing, with the box in front of it so my little 20 month old is not "interested" in it. hahaha

It's also IMPOSSIBLE to explain it to people. My Father in law came over and offered to help "put it in place". I had to politely decline because we still need the old one for now, and the new one is not "ready". He kept assuring me that he did not do such things when he got his plasma a couple years ago!!! ;P

Let me start by saying I am no expert, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night. To me, the main benefits of using the slides for a 100 hours is to break the TV in faster and to age the phosphers evenly. The third benefit is that you can use Dnice settings.

I did call Panasonic and talked to them about their recommendations. They said to use Cinema for the first 100 hours and not to use any material that has a stationary logo or fixed graphic. I used cinema for the first 100 hours and the slides during the night and day to break the TV in faster. I used different settings from the DIY thread and I have been quite pleased since I broke the 100 hour mark. I used full-screen on a few movies and I was careful not to watch anything that was 4:3.

I have had a plasma before and I've warned my daughters with death if they walk away from the TV while gaming. I have had image retention on my old plasma, but I ran the slides over night and it went away. I hope I am as lucky with my 55ST30.

Tv's drift on their output the most when new, they change quite a bit, so it's recommended by calibrators to run the panel at least 100/200 hours on up to 1500hrs before spending the money. This way you will get more bang for your buck.

Here's a few charts that show the MLL, light output, and color temp changes over 2000hrs from new, just to give an idea.

Well, you are doing the same thing that I am doing. Slides at night, cinema mode when watching during the day. Kids are banned from gaming period until 150 hours. Wife has been threatened that all programming must be full screen

I had this exact same issue, I saw this happen during basketball games and hockey games...I get where you are coming from, I have 2 other Panny plasmas and neither had the flicker...I waited the 100 hours before doing any customizing or calibration. I now have custom mode in use, looks terrific (couldnt get away with doing the slides, kids where too excited) but I did keep the picture in standard mode the first week and a half, only full screen, no bars of any sort.

I recorded one of the games where the flicker was awful...I watched it again on my custom settings and couldnt see it (believe I was looking for it!) I went back to standard (default) mode and could see it plain as day... try custom settings, should take care of it for you.

Well I just got my new 55ST30 out of the box and in the bedroom.

Couple ?'s om break-in. Why is it necessary and what really happens if you don't break it in?

I searched for D-NICEs settings but I must be doing something wrong because it returned no results?
Does anybody on here do anything with their 3D settings, I just got the Xpand glasses today and have been comparing them to the PS3 glasses. I must say there doesn't seem to be any difference between the 2( atleast 3d wise). The Xpands are a lot more comfortable. come with 3 batteries per pair. and 3 nose pieces. The lens does seem a little clearer on the Xpands, but the PS3's have the rechargeable battery. The Sony ones are going back.

I just my second ST30 HDTV. Today, the 65" came in from Amazon and to my great disappointment, the TV is damaged.

http://imgur.com/wVcZ2

Amazon is gonna replace it, but in the mean time, is there anything I can do to fix it? What is causing the color streaking?

Thanks!

Read my post just above about drift.

Here's the 2011 settings thread that you are looking for

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1371710

You can just punch in any settings you want, the tv will handle it without breakin but be sure minimize static images for a while.

There really isn't any thread dedicated to glasses for this tv, which is unfortunate. There is the 3d section, but most of the posts seem to be about DLP. If you are getting the same performance out of both glasses, keep the cheaper ones. How much did you spend on the Xpand's and from where? I have yet to buy glasses and don't want to spend more than I have to.

You're welcome. I put about 30hrs on my ST and then played a game with a white static hud for 3 three hour sessions(and nothing else) and got retention from it. I watched full screen material and it was gone the next day or two. It is in a bedroom so it gets less than normal usage and I watch plenty of black bar material with full screen before and after and get no IR from it. I like the idea of running full screen after a possible IR inducing session to help out even out the wear.

Thanks. I changed to custom settings and the dimming then brightness pop is no longer noticeable. I'm suspicious that's it's still occurring just no longer visible, but I guess it doesn't really matter as long as I can't see it. I watched hockey and it looked fine.

With basketball it's still not quite right. There's no more dimming and brightness popping but there are screen flashes. It's almost like anytime a flash from a photographer's camera goes off the TV can't handle it and the whole screen flashes for maybe a millisecond. I'll keep playing around with the settings and check my flash/board version. If it's just relegated to those flashes I'll live with it given there are really no other options that waiting for the 2012 model which will be at least $800 more and probably have it's own set of problems. Thanks and if anyone else has any suggestions fire away. Appreciate the help so far b/c all of your suggestions about changing the settings have taken it from a problem I could not live with to a minor annoyance.

On a positive note, this TV is spectacular, especially for the price I paid for it. It kicks the picture on 59" Samsung I had square in the a$$ and it doesn't buzz like a swarm of bees and crickets and I haven't even gotten the settings dialed in to half of how good I know they can be.

Not trying to thread crap but I finally sold my old rp lcd 60" sony to buy one of these babies and I can't find these super blow out prices anywhere. I'm not asking for a place or a price but being that my wife is pissed because there is now a big blank space where a tv should be, I am having to spend a lot more than I was planning. Several places are giving me grief about taxes/shipping and price matching.

My question is for long time owners of this set. Am I going to have to deal with any type of buzzing a year after I buy this set? (I am at about 3300 feet if that matters) If prices were equal, would this still be a better choice than a 70" sharp? I've compared the 2 and I guess I'm lucky because they both look good to my eyes. I see that the blacks are a little better and that it is a little more film like but other than that, it's a toss up. I'm going for reliability and I guess the failure rate for sharps is 3% and Panasonic is 2% but I still have concerns. The sales guy I've been dealing with says that the prices on these are going to climb but every day they are slowly falling so I don't know what to believe. I am a little hesitant about this 100 slide break in stuff, and the tech behind led lcds sounds simpler like there is less to break but I don't know.

I know this is very subjective but is the 3-d on this set good? I know I need to crap or get off the pot but this is becoming much more expensive then when I started. (my wife also insists that our current tv stand "doesn't look good" so that's another $200 bucks)

If I pull the trigger on one of these and a week after warranty it blows up or green blobs, I am going to rage punch something. Maybe I am just looking for justification of spending 2 grand on a tv or just some reassurance. Sorry

AVS fears highdefjunkees for some reason. I don't know the history.

I wonder if they block hometheatershack or highdefforums. Edit: Looks like they let that those go through.

If you can find a price you like then get one, prices may drop for clearance or they may creep up a bit since there are only a relatively few left as the new models come out. You do not have to do any break in or do much special with these TVs. I own several 3D movies and they look great but I didnt necessarily get the TV for that purpose. With defects popping up after warranty you just never know, buy the TV with a American Express Card or Visa that doubles the manufacture's warranty and sleep easy.

I figured as much. I can tell you that I love my 55" ST30, which I bought recently for 999. At that price, I don't think you can buy a better performing set by any manufacturer, regardless of what technology is used. I have owned a Mid range Sony LED and a Toshiba DLP in the past and this panasonic has a better overall picture by far. After comparing it to my friend's 240hz LCD 60" Sharp, I cannot recommend it over the panny.
