Check out the "Motion Resolution" part of the below ST50 review:

It seems to explain a lot about the issues I was having (and it sounds like you are having) with the 2011 Panasonics.

The new ST50's sound pretty impressive.

I know this will probably sound dumb but what is the fastest and best way to unbox this beast and still keep the box nice? I just ordered one this afternoon and they are telling me I have 10 minutes to inspect it before leaving. They said to use a led flashlight on the screen to look for cracks, what would be the best way to see if there are any other problems? Should I just put on a blu-ray or is there some slide show/screen I could quickly put on to check for other issues? I hope my eyes are not as picky as some of yours and that I love it cause my wife wants to kill me.

Can anyone give me some input? Yesterday I picked up a 42ST30 and saw that the Serial was LA1151xxx and a May 2011 build so i was aware of the FBr issue and decided to check the values. My PDP EEP reads 33.50 from my understanding it should be 33.51, so would be enough to justify it or should I do some testing with AGC at 0 and CATS off on some BR material?

You can pull the top of the box off while leaving the bottom of the box intact. if the box looks like it's in goo shape then you should take a look at the back and front of the TV to see if there is any damage to the screen or side/rear. If that looks good plug the TV into an outlet and let it get to the start menu. If everything looks OK you are good to go.

I believe they need you to sign off that the TV is in good condition. Don't sign it if they are rushing you.

I always recommend watching some blu-rays that you are familiar with and see if you notice FBr. However, the build date, serial number, and PDP EEP reveal that you likely have a set that would exhibit FBr.

[quote=Has anyone forgone the whole "break in" period and watched widescreen blu rays with <100 hours on the set? How did that go? I'm getting antsy already.[/QUOTE]

I didn't bother with the 100 hour burn in or anything. I just unboxed it, changed the settings to my liken and enjoyed it. The reason for the burn in, and why it is a good idea, is so that it doesn't leave any marks on your tv forever. But I watch maybe 2 -3 hours a night and I make sure it is never left on any screen for more than a minute at the most just to be safe. I also looked all over the manual and could not find anything that said a 100 hour burn in is required. Gorgeous blacks, much better than the 55"LG I have also. LG has always been good, but this PQ is Greaaat !!!

Tell 'em to keep their pants on, you just dropped decent money and want to make sure they were nice to it in the truck
1st, get someone to help you if you can. Mine is a 50" and not too difficult, but I took my time.

It's been a while since I unboxed mine, but here goes...There some locks that hold the outer box to the inner. Follow direstions on the outside of the box to pop them out, lift the outter shell straight up. I believe there are another set of locks holding things together in the inner box. Lift the panel out and gently lay it down on a couch. Put the base together and set the panel into it (it's a nice solid base!). I don't know if you'll need to screw it together just to test it out. In good lighting, look from all angles for cracks to the panel. Plug it in and look for any dead/stuck pixels. Pop on something you're familiar with. If you have something with a large white or gray "Welcome" screen, use that to check for the green and/or pink shaded patches of color you've probably read about. I attached the break-in slides you load onto a USB stick, but you're probably not going to have time to get that involved in the short time you have.

When my wife realized I bought a 50" TV for twice what she thought we should spend, she about killed me too

Thank you tfoltz! Will do.

Thank you guys! So after I sign off on it, I should do the break in slides for 100 hours and if I do watch movies, do it in cinema mode stretched so there is no black bars correct?

Then after that, I will take on the epic journey of trying to calibrate it.

Sounds on point, I'm in the process of the slides right now. Enjoy your set!

None taken, sorry if it came across that way...I'm a bit on the paranoid side...if I spend over $1000 on ANYTHING, heck make that $300, I research. Sometimes too much resaerch that leads to the point of indecision. But, I had decided to wait a few months to get a set that had a patch, A board, or whatever. When I saw this flicker, I couldnt tell if it was FBr, or something different.

Was I swayed to thinking it was FBr, you bet! Because of forums like these, probably. However, I was initially told it was source, but I couldnt leave it alone because it was driving me CRAZY...then I got the 100 hours in and adjust to Custom mode and all is good now, AWESOME actually.

Are the Gremmy settings brighter? Is the brightness mid? I like a brighter picture. Where are the Gremmy settings posted?

Thanks

Yes, one of the changes for Gremmy's is the brightness to mid, and one of the "warm1", I think (from memory).

There are also some BIG differences in other settings. I prefer a "brighter" look as well and for now Gremmy's setting are better for me. I have those settings saved on my other PC... lemme see if I can find it for you right quick.

**found it**

I don't think that is what I am seeing.

Because the scores are not moving. They are always on the same spot on the TV.

I wonder if it is the source. I finally got some new HDMI cables, and I think they look considerably better than the old ones I was using.

Hey, that's great!

Hopefully not mental!

I'll see for sure this weekend during the games.

I figured HDMI was HDMI, but those cables are over 5 years old, so maybe they don't support today's stuff. In fact, I just contacted Monoprice and asked about it, and he said with that age they definitely would be having issues keeping up with today's technology, and could introduce artifacts into the picture.

Yup, that will be the test. Fwiw, it was only around moving hockey/soccer players (when the camera was zoomed out) that I was seeing the contouring. So hopefully the new HDMI cable will resolve it there for you.

Has anyone else experienced a blank screen and a blinking power light with their ST30?

I need to work on the light in my room during the day. So DNice is good at night but right now I need mid panel in the day. CaryP looked better on my set then gremmy's awesome contribution. However, there's a new mid panel brightness setup that for me is the best yet. Look for Jimmy's settings over in the DIY thread. It's on the last couple pages n heavily discussed.

Anyone have any issues with the USB ports not working. Mine worked great the first day, but they haven't worked since (2 weeks ago) I think something must have shorted on on the board because my usb's (I have tried many) work fine on my computer and other TVs, just not this TV anymore.

Suggestions

I'm wondering if that is what caused the problem with mine!!! I was running the break-in slides via the USB port and on the last day of break-in, at some point during the day, the tv shut off and the power light began blinking. The tech will be taking a look at it tomorrow.

Had my first jaw dropping moment the other day watching POTC: On Stranger Tides. When they get to the canyon and want Jack to jump, the greenery, the water, everything. Though some settings have been turned down and it seems a little dim, the picture was popping and in Super widescreen the inky black borders just brought a smile to my face.
I've never seen one in person, much less in a dark room with good settings, but i get the feeling this is close to what those Pioneer owners must experience with their PDPs. I saw all those screenshots on some crummy LCD monitor and they still looked incredible!

Just tried Red Box for the first time as well, didn't know it was so cheap to rent a Blu-ray, i'm sure many of those moments are ahead with this display. Taking a trip through DLP territory i really missed the dark detail, even if it isn't that great after reading this thread, it's brilliant to me!

Wish i could post a pic, but no good camera, no tripod and even then i don't know how to take a good picture sorry guys :P

I'm having a weird problem with 3d. I have my PS3 go to a Monoprice hdmi splitter. From the splitter, I have one hdmi cord go to my Onkyo 604 and the other one goes up to my 55st30. I have an optical cord down from the tv to my stereo. I had it work great for a day. Now my PS3 is not reading 3d from the TV. The only thing I can think of is that my hdmi cords are old. Should I start with replacing my hdmi cords? Any other suggestions?

How old are the cords?
My guess is that the hdmi cables are at least 5 years old.
