I don't know your receiver, but mine is so old that it doesn't have HDMI, so I use optical audio and hdmi video to my projector. I have to manually select the optical option in the ps3. When I was poking around in settings just to see if anything struck me as a viable option now that I've had it for a few months, I thought I saw some kind of 'double output audio' option in there for hdmi audio. Check it out. if you are running hdmi to tv and receiver, you probably have to enable the double thing (if I recall the option properly).

One way to get audio from your cable box would be to run an optical cable into the back of your receiver, from the out of the cable box. Also check the Onkyo menu to see if Audio is set to HDMI(if you are running anything with HDMI cables for sound. I had an issue with my Onkyo 705 a while back, and remember going to the manual for getting sound from the DVR cable box. The simple way would be to just run the optical cable. Is the cable box the only thing that you are running into the reciever? I do not have the manual, but look at what settings are in the manual for running sound out of the TV and into the Onyko. I will look at my Onkyo and try to get more of an idea when I get home form work in a few hours.

Hi lizrussspike
thanks for the reply
I currently have the HDTV running to the receiver via HDMI and other audio devices
turntable, dual cassette deck, and cd player also running into the receiver
PS3 is currently running to the HDTV via HDMI

thanks again for your input

scully,
How about running your PS3 into the receiver via HDMI, and then have the HDMI out of the receiver into the HDTV. You would then need to go to the tv input and select the input number that the receiver is input to on your tv, and after the PS3 is powered up, you should have picture/sound out of the receiver from the PS3 and then be able to view gameplay and music over the PS3 while watching. The way to get TV to produce sound out of the reciever would be to run an optical cable from the tv into the receiver. I think you can even label the inputs on your Onkyo from one of the menus. If you want to run CD music or view movies from the PS3, then you would need to run the PS3 into the receiver via HDMI, and then run HDMI out of the receiver into the inputs on the side/back of your tv. try these things and and then let me know, so we can do some more feedback/troubleshooting
