I've done that awhile ago, my TV uniformity isn't too bad.

I swear to you, mine is almost perfect.

I have the faintest of clouds on the top right 1/3rd off center and the top left 2/3rds off center. Its definately does not hinder viewing at all.

My former troubles were with a perfect calibration, and now I have that seems, the picture is the clearest its ever been.

Some people may say I am uppity about that fact, but no, I am pissed, because EVERY tv should be like this. Its not good, knowing I have a one in 50 tv.

I think its ****. And it gives the tvs a bad name.

I have no virtical or horizontal banding, no clouding, only the faintest corner lights, and they do not always come on, all black movies are in fact black in the corners.

Even SD looks crystal clear a lot of the time.

For instance, my parents 7000, which I purchased with them at the store because I knew more about tvs than they did, came with banding, chronically.

I feel bad. BUT they dont care, they are getting older, love natural mode more than a calibration (except when I did movie for blueray), and they dont mind. BUt I feel bad.

Samsung should not do this to people. Theirs is a case of a true return I think. The banding is off putting on the cricket. It does not destroy an experience and like I say, they dont care, but for me, it should not be there.

A LINK ABOUT UNIFORMITY. great read.

I think samsung, acording to this, my discernment of it is, samsung changed the way the backlights get used in later f/w

This article stemmed from an e-mail exchange between a CNET reader from Maine and our man Katzmaier. The reader had returned several LCDs, as the brightness uniformity bothered him. To him, and to you if you're also bothered by this artifact, I'll offer this piece of sage advice: skip LCD. Get a plasma.

Does anyone know when the prices start going down on these TVs? Ive been shopping for a 55 for about a month now and really can't find one for less than $1900. Would like to get one for a little cheaper. Slickdeals has been useless for me.

Slickdeals was great to me. Got the 55d8000 for $1787. You may not find it for cheaper than that.

Trust me, I can't even find it for that cheap.

This is a great read, it's just the reality of the situation. Although my set is great with little to no screen uniformity issues, some people are going to have it. The bottom the article says, get a plasma. I will never do it. Owned one for a month, will never own one again.

After reading articles like that, its almost as if the 65 inchers are a grossly incompetent decision.

I couldn't imaging watching a 65 inch screen with uniformity issues.

Unless the brand new panels are made out of a more rigid, even material. Seems hard even so.

I bought my 55d8000 in December locally pricematched to amazon.com. (Not some seller through amazon, but direct) for 1840. At the time, I was thinking prices would drop around the superbowl but it never happened. Most reputable dealers are well over $2000. I think the next price drop may only happen when the next gen is released. You might find a good deal with a no name shop but most local stores only price match major dealers.

Thats what Im wondering. When will the new models be released? I have no clue, so Im wondering if I should just wait at this point.

Id hate to buy this for 1900 now, 2100 with a 4 year square trade, and then see the price drop 300 or so in a month or 2.

How is this TV in dark rooms? I've seen a lot of random reports that it doesn't look great. I heard it looks great in a bright room but bad in a dark room which is hilarious to me.

Basically all I see all the time i various problems with all of these modern TVs which is pathetic, but whatever, I'm in desperate need of a new TV. I guess they don't even made LED LCDs without flaws which is a total mystery to me, one I suppose I have to live with.

Got my 46D8000 installed over the holidays. I wanted the installation to look more like a painting hanging from the picture rail than a TV floating on the wall. Mantle was built by me as well...

I want this or the 7000 series but it's too much in local stores and reasonable online , but with all the issues with these sets it scares me due to the return/exchange troubles and turn around times dealing with shipping them back. And just saw the 2012 prices and they are almost double of what these sets are.

For some, paying a few hundred more to buy from a local store is worth it just in case something does go wrong.

Im actually kind of in the same boat. I could get the 55" from Best Buy with their 4 year geek squad protection plan which covers everything for around $2800. Something goes wrong, I just make a call and it gets taken care of. I dont have to lift a finger.

I could get it online with a 4 year square trade for around $2200. $600 more for the convenience of having BB come pick it up whenever any little thing goes wrong with it. Is it worth it? Not sure yet. Still trying to figure out what to do.

That looks really sweet. The design wouldn't work for me because I prefer the thin look of the bezel "floating" off the wall, vs. the picture frame look you went for

But I do admire your taste. Well done and it does look great

Square trade also picks up the unit. I bought mine from buydig. After a 4 year warranty and everything it was $1960.

+1.
I sacrificed saving $185 by buying at a brick and mortar store. I was going to buy it from an online vendor but once I accepted the TV and if anything went wrong, I'd have to call Samsung and schedule and appt.

A few hours after I had the brick and mortar TV running, a line of dead pixels ran from top to bottom (pic posted some pages back). I was able to pack it up (very easy) bring it back to the brick and mortar store (very light) and within an hour had the replacement set up and running.

I'll be honest. If it were, let's say a savings of $400+, then I probably would buy it from an online vendor.

Ah. I always thought that if I ordered this from a 3rd party seller through Amazon, if something goes wrong Im stuck having to ship it out.

Yeah well the difference here between ordering from amazon and best buy is quite a bit. Their 4 year service alone is $150 more than 4 years od square trade. I guess the main advantage is like you said, something goes wrong and it gets dealt with immediately, no scheduling appointments or anything like that.

Read Square Trade's policies. Any tv over 37" they are sending someone to look at it. They would lose their a**** off by shipping tvs back and forth.

D8000,

The white clouding affects not only blu-rays and movies, but also tv and video games. No matter the source, if a dimmer picture comes up on the display, the clouding appears. I created a 25% grey scale picture with paint and saved to a usb drive. Below is the picture of my results. Whats ur opinion?

I saved roughly $500-600 by ordering my tv online rather than going to a big box store. The tv is cheaper, the warranty is cheaper, and you avoid sales tax.

I was told by my Geek Squad that if I got their warranty, they would just contact the authorized Samsung repair center to fix it, which is the same thing Squaretrade would do. I went with Squaretrade.

Thanks!

My mount is 1" deep. The bottom of the TV nearly touches the wall, and the top is tilted out about 2.5" from the wall. That seemed to be the best angle for viewing. Getting all the wires and power behind to hide them was not without challenge, but I'm more than happy with the result.
The one complication I had was with the frame covering the remote detection area. I had to move the frame down slightly so I could use the remote comfortably.
As others have most likely said, the UI of the QWERTY remote is not great, but it works well. I'm using the unit in Wi-Fi mode right now, but have a CAT6 cable to wire it directly to my router, which I think will work better since it's in another room.
Combined with the Samsung BD5500 player makes the setup pretty seamless. It's not without glitches in UI, but working pretty well so far.

I used video calibration settings that I found on this site. After that, I used a DVD I got from a co-worker to calibrate (fewer options to change) and they were nearly identical results. I think fine tuning with the DVD worked well for fine tuning the set to work in my environment.

Still need to update the BD player to the most recent software once it's connected to the router...

hi all--

So, I just bit the bullet on a UN55D8000 but, for some reason, probably because I have been waiting to do upgrade from my 42" Samsung Plasma, I didn't check here.

I am very concerned about the cloudy image reports and uniformity problems and after sifting through as many of these posts as I have time for, I can't figure out:

1 - Is this a hardware problem?
2 - If so, was it fixed with later iterations of the hardware? I assume I am getting a more recent build
3 - Was there a firmware update that addressed the situation?

I can still cancel my purchase in Amazon and am wondering if I should. I am really picky about picture quality (I tend to go plasma, but I like the thin bezel and how thin the set is overall) and I am worried that I will be distracted by the non uniform picture.

But it sounds like you all got used to it. Was it through settings in the backlight, settings and break-in period that fixed it, or is the TV that good that it's just a minor thing? Would you suggest I wait for the unit to arrive and just return it if I hate it? I can handle that route...

thanks for your help,
best,
mike

Cancel and get a 60 or 65 lol. This TV is awesome once you get your settings to your preference. Yes its not perfect but what is? I have a H301 Only complaint is slight banding that happens only through my cable box on a quick pan with a white or gray background that you may notice for 1 second every 24 hrs or so. I hosted a Super Bowl party and just about every person at my house thought they were looking through a window in the stadium. They were blown away. And they loved when the screen would go totally black before going to a commercial. I know this sounds crazy but I am able to have my backlight set at 18 with no issues. I tweaked my picture settings for about 2 weeks before finally getting it nailed. Blu-ray and 3D are outstanding. I have different settings for both.
Keep your set. I had about 5 or 6 TV's (Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Samsung) in the last 4 or 5 years and this is the best one I've ever had. You are lucky you didn't find this thread before buying. You would have probably not done so. I took a chance and am extremely happy with my purchase. I believe most people that are happy just don't bother to post about it. The complaints and problems will always be posted however. Good Luck.
Thanks, tpstulane!
I really appreciate your note. I've been looking at the more recent reviews in Amazon and it seems that the people who got their sets in the last few months have been very happy with it. I am coming from a plasma (an old one, but still), and I am addicted to the deep blacks, but the ghost images and the buzzing drive me nuts.

My biggest worry? It's going to be too big for the room and the wife might freak out...though it's only 1" higher and 3" wider on either side. BUT, she's excited about it being silver and I think when it is turned on it will be awesome..

Anyway, thanks so much for this reply, I feel better--it should come early next week and I will post a report!!

thanks for taking the time to reply.

best,
mike
