Wichita, KS - HDTV - Page 92

Well after almost 2 weeks on AT&T U-verse, I have to say the setup it is fairly livable. Once I get that 2nd HD feed I will be a happy camper. I like being able to watch recorded shows in any room, and all channels available on all sets. VOD (video on demand), is light years better than Cox. Cox is definetly behind the times, in several areas. I may need to relocate the DVR box, to the most used set to better manage the recordings.

My only complaint was the NCAA BB feed (both HD & SD) looked like crap this last w/e. I heard several people on Dish & Cox mention the same, I think it is a CBS issue.

I will be purchasing a couple of Digital OTA boxes, to see if I can live with just the local channels on two lightly used sets.

Thanks for the update on Uverse. I'm looking forward to its availability in my area, although I'm not sure the pricing is as competitive as it was a year ago. Keep us posted.

Explain why you feel this way? Just saying it doesn't help us on here understand what you mean. Thanks.

Sorry didn't mean to be so general & vague. First off, U-verse access is lighting fast compared to Cox, Cox seem to take forever to load, & get to a category. Graphics, tabs all just seem much easier to navigate on U-verse. Over the years I kept trying to use Cox VOD, but always ended up being frustrated, find it all a bit too cumbersome.

Again being able to use the Web to manage your recordings (setup, delete) is very handy.

~JimG.

<> Updated: 3/27 -- U-verse has VOD in HD, I don't believe Cox does (someone correct me if I'm wrong). You can browse thru VOD while still listening to your current show. With COX you were either in VOD or standard channels. Selection is greater on AT&T too.

<> HD offerings COX had 1 HBO-HD, U-verse there are 14-HD & 14-digital (non-hd) HBO's, plus all the others. Not to mention the other Showtime, Cinemax, Starz. Tons more sport channels, FSN etc. There are over 100 HD choices, 450++ channels.

<> No I don't work for AT&T, just happy to have another choice besides $$$ COX $$$.

<> Pay-Per-View is available in HD, for a mere $10 more, where Cox was charging the same price for SD as with AT&T in HD.

<> Cox Internet connections seem to always drop/disconnect during the night. AT&T so far has been solid. Phone service would also disconnect every 6-8 weeks, causing the home security alarm to go off in the middle of the night.

<> Just got my first bill, I'm estimating that I will be about $35 less per month than COX (hopefully that will last). That is with 7 TV's with set-tops, so I can watch HD on all 7 (only 3 are HD ready).

<> Right now my biggest beef is only getting 1 HD feed, instead of two (promised). But I'm working around that by setting up my HD records overnight & during the daytimes whenever possible. SD channels appear to be better on a lot of channels, local can be weak at times.

Has anyone gotten the channel 8 group working OTA east of Wichita (Augusta)? I've had some knee problems fixed and hadn't been able to post since February. When KPTS went totally digital, I had great reception for 2 days and the mid-February, saw the Smokey Hills stations out of Salina and then nothing since. I get everything else pretty clearly, although I think I need to raise my antenna higher. Channel 10 gets pixelated once in a while.

KWCH's weather graphics have been in HD for about a month. It was a bit rough at the beginning, but I think they are finally getting the new system figured out. What does everyone think?

Hi Gabe, Love the new HD graphics...wow. Large, Bright, and Stunning. The only comment I have is, everyone now does it, but why do they put so much emphasis on showing the high resolution map backgrounds of geography (Satellite View). To me I think it adds noise and distracts the eye. Why do we need to see all those different color gradations for elevation, etc...it just bugs the crap out of me. What ever happened to showing the map backgrounds with cities and roads. In your case however, it is very nice how you can show the radar in 3D like mode, slightly elevated above the ground and very nice. Keep up the great work!

My main antenna is a Terrestrial Digital DB4, mounted in the attic. The DB4 is an excellent UHF antenna and will also pull in most high-band vhf, but got absolutely zero signal for channel 8. I did a little research and determined that simple pair of "rabbit ears" optimized for channel 8 may do the trick; rather than buying another uhf/vhf antenna. So, last night I set my $10 Radio Shack rabbit ears at full horizontal with the poles extended to a total width of 31", and mounted them perpendicular to the signal tower. I mounted the ears as high as I could in my attic and ran a 10ft coax lead to a Radio Shack uhf/vhf combiner (also connected to the DB4).

Check the channel 8 signal and it was pegged at a steady 70/71 out of 100, good enough for a perfect picture. I am 31 miles, due south of the tower. As an added benefit my signal for ABC improved 10+ points.

Anyway hope this helps any of you who lost KPTS when they switched to vhf. The fix was easy for me, good luck to you.

Unfettered, you might give this a shot. KPTS and KAKE are both transmitting on VHF which some UHF focused antennas have trouble with. I had the same problem you did, but my solution above resolved it. I'm on the outskirts of west Wichita, however, so you've likely got a little more of a distance issue than I had.

They better be the rest of the Disney HD offerings. Those are honestly the only ones left that I can think of.

Just looking at some other cities that have HD channels through Cox, there's BET HD, IFC HD, WGN HD, and WE HD.

Also Cox has added FSRHD again, the Fox Sports Royals channel, on 656, which is, I guess, a seasonal thing.

I really wish that FSRHD becomes a full-time FSNHD and broadcast some Big 12 games in HD, especially since the Big 12 network will be broadcasting games in HD this fall....

PPV HD??? Go to ONDemand and it's all there.
HD Net, probably will never happen due to how much they charge for operators to cary the station.
KSCW HD, I think the paperwork is being worked on if I remember right from my friend. It was a late night, that's why I can't remember the other HD stations Cox is adding.

Cox Omaha will add Fox News HD, MLB Network HD, Speed HD, E! HD, Cartoon Network HD Disney Channel HD, ABC Family HD, & FX HD on April 30th. I think the only channels we don't have out of that mix is Speed HD and Disney Channel HD. Correct me if I'm wrong. When we get Disney I will drop my extended cable and with the money I save add digital boxes on the rest of my tvs. My sister would throw a fit otherwise.

Here in ICT we have all of them except ABC Family HD and Disney Channel HD. Personally, I would like to see KSCW HD, WGN HD and We HD (My wife and I got hooked on Bridezillas - damn those b***hes are fun-knee!!!!)

I had a bit of from Smokey Hills Public TV right before they went to the new digital transmitter.

Honestly, I think it would be safe to say that the other 5 are the remaining previously mentioned Disney Corporation channels. Normally carriage agreements are made on a company by company basis. Unless it is more HD movie channels, Disney is the only one left with a big number of channels left that Cox still does not carry.

It's nice to see the group is still active, I don't spend much time in here anymore. I had to swing by and pass this story on, it's interesting that this mentality still exists. On the other hand it explains why KCTU sucks as bad as it does. Guess I'm a loser.

Wow, just wow, thats all I have to say. I have never watched KCTU (Not sure what it is) and now I know why I have never seen or heard about it. I surely wont be watching it. I will imagine the next time we hear KCTU, it will be "KCTU decides to launch an HD channel in order to try and get out of debt."

Hey Squid, give you the 411 on KCTU....when they signed on back in 2001, they were PAX affiliate, while all the time they have been fighting to go on Cox's cable lineup. But since they are a LP station, Cox is not obligated to carry them, even though they had over 6000 signatures for a petition. They dropped their PAX/i/ion affiliate last year to become local. They also stream their programming on the net.

Yeah, that "net" you mention. I invite everyone over for a quick trip over to kctu.com. It's pretty bizarre that there are still sites like this. Think - the first time you saw someone make a website in 1995 - and you'll be right there.

Sorry, nothing personal against this station producer, but when you blanket people like he did and call us all losers with no-life, he better expect some criticism. And boy, between the programming and the website, he opened a gold mine just for that purpose.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go find an animated gif that says "Under Construction!" for him....

Some new HD channels coming this June.

The Disney Channel HD
NBA TV HD
HBO 2 HD
ABC Family HD
BET HD
WGN HD
Encore HD
NHL Network

So what channels do people want now?
Ok, including these new channels coming in June, anyone want to make a stab at a complete list of HD channels available in Wichita now? I know I've kinda lost track (a good problem to have, I suppose!), and don't subscribe to premium movie channels. KSCableGuy seems to be hip on all this, how about a list?

*Sidenote - WGNHD? Really? Who is asking for that? :^\\
